Bobby C. is heard but not seen in the film., but this is a great video ... love the song, and seeing Dr. John play the guitar. ... thanks for the post.
Hey dolfkoeienverhuur, thanks for the response on my comment. I've done some reading on Bobby since I wrote that first comment and yes, I see how he was uncomfortable with celebrity, which makes this video (and this incredible concert) all the more special.
B.Charles never felt happy on stage. But the fact he was present here was a matter of friendship. Not a matter of bad or good. If you were a musician, you would know that rehearsing never helps against anything.
there were all kinds of technical glitches that makes the Last Waltz what it is...they missed some stuff, but not much..the crew did not realize that muddy waters was about to come on and only one camera actually films him...from a distance..thats why it looks so different from the rest of the show..you can see Dr. John soloing on guitar in this video, but you really can't hear it.....I was supposed to see Bobby Charles on two different occasions...he cancelled both shows.

Well, I've waited 40+ years to see this footage - thanks so much for posting it! I've played the remixed track from the Complete Last Waltz set ever since I bought it, but never thought I'd see any footage of BC performing. Mind you, if Scorsese had got his way, Muddy Waters wouldn't have been in the Last Waltz concert - luckily Levon Helm put his foot down and said - No Muddy, no Levon. Good man!
The style of the footage is consistent with the footage typically recorded by BGP at the time (Bill Graham Presents). Think Wolfgang's Vault. The B/W video footage has typically been seen of other shows from BGP. Since this show was produced by Bill Graham, its could very well be from the basement tapes. And judging by Bobby's slightly uncomfortable presence, its likely been cut rather than not filmed. (not filming any part of a live event like this would've been historically careless.)
Love and miss you Bobby! It's hard to believe that you have been gone a whole year now! I truly hope that folks listen to your songs for many years to come!
It's great but there's something I don't get. I have the Last Waltz soundtrack and the intro they play here is totally different one from the soundtrack. In fact it sounds totally different. Here, they seem to just be singing whereas on the soundtrack they're all really letting it all out. I'm guessing one of these is an overdub.
there was a lot of overdubbing, not just on the movie, but also on the Complete Box Set. I think the violin is missing (obviously, Rick couldn't do both at the same time) and the trumpet was removed, too.
Excellent post. Pointless to argue why this happened and something else didn't. It's done. Bobby never received the recognition he should have and I'm guessing he never will but seeing this is not only fun; it's important. Anything documenting his work is well worthwhile and the fact that past July, another handful of songs he recorded on Chess back in the 50s were finally released was a nice surprise. We can only hope for more. Good job!
Thanks for posting this.I could never understand why this wasn't in the movie. If it true that everthing wasn't filmed I often wonder what else was missed that magical night.Seen Levon at Massey Hall in T.O. Last night "Great" !
They left Bobby Charles out of the video because they said they did not film it. So where the hell did this raw footage come from. Who ever recorded this did not have it on a tripod or stand. I highly doubt ole Martin Scorsese would allow the take to be shot unsteady. It leads me to believe that one of Charles' people must have recorded this at the Last Waltz Concert. Levon Said in an interview that Robbie horribly overdubbed all the sound footage for the movie and the Cd's.
Its not one of Charles' people, its an audience member.
The audience member shot the entire concert, unedited, on a home camera.
Scorsese did not include the performance in the film because Scorsese didnt "shoot satisfactory footage" of it. There is a bootleg out there that has the entire concert (this footage with better audio and the main feature spliced together) on film.

I guess he was shy and he does kind of look lost up there maybe thats why they left him out the film? Still what a great songwriter, and nice to see Garth strap on the accordian at the last waltz.
@Freakster1970 what Ive heard is he was very rarely on stage during even the prime years of his life. It says something that it was included in the soundtrack. The 2 BC stuff I own are a $1 tape of the 50s stuff I bought in the 80s-90s and the 70s bearsville cd of the album he did w/ the boys, both are excellent. The cd I bought is now only available @ amazon as a $10 download.
Thanks for this man. Been doin Bobby in a tribute to the Last Waltz on and off for the last eighteen months. First time I've seen this. Really never did get the credit he deserved for a great songbook did he.
@rocknrollcola Dr. John began his musical career playing guitar, but a gunshot wound to his hand forced him to change to piano. This wonderful footage of Bobby Charles and The Band is all the more rare and precious having captured The Doctor on guitar at the same time. Nice. Thanks for posting.
Funny thing I definately remember this being in the movie first time I saw it. Then when I revisited the film in later years it wasn't there. But hey! what a fantastic legacy of great songs he's left us
nice to see this...however he is looking very ill at ease up there and it's not at all surprising he was cut from the film...is this from the security footage...?
@ folsom37Superrrrf That would me Great. Bobby was not for LIVE stage performances he. So what Dolf did was fantastic.I made some selfmade clips of his wonderfull songs.
great video, thanks for posting...RIP Bobby Charles

Great song, but either Bobby Charles missed rehearsal or he's better with a pen than on stage.

@Elphir The violin is not played by Rick, but Larry Packer, who was the violinist in the horn section that night.
