An interesting read also is "The Magical Dilemma of Victor Neuberg"by Jean Overton Fuller. I've got just about every Crowley book in ebook form yet haven't been able to sit through a single one lol. Both him and LaVey used the enochian alphabet to summon demons to do their will. He was definitely a satanist.
If a Satanist is someone who stands to oppose, the original etymology, then yes, Crowley was a Satanist; if a Satanist is someone who deliberately acts in negation of someone else's values, acting the black to someone else's white, and thus relegating their self to a subordinate, secondary, abreactionary position, then no, Crowley was not a Satanist, he was a Thelemite. Thou hast no right but to do thy will. 93. (ps. I can read his books with ease.)
Crowley was not a satanist - from crowley's 'Magic and Theory in Practice' P.35 - "The devil is called satan or shaitan, and reguarded with horror by people who are ignorant of his formula... Satan is saturn, set, abrasax, Adad, Adonis, Attis, Adam, Adonai etc. The most serious charge against him is that he is the sun in the south... Capricornus (satan) is moreover the sign which the sun enters when it reaches its extreme southern declination at the winter solstice". Astrology!
Crowley is hard to understand unless you already get it... I would describe him more as a gnostic, a metaphysicist, a mystic, a shaman, a genius, a trickster, a mountain climber, and a hedonist. He had many various aspects, he was a well rounded individual who discovered his own godliness. Most of the great rock n roll songs are influenced by the metaphysical knowledge that Crowley brought to the masses.
@hartejoseph jesus is muslim by definition. islam means "total submission to God". If you went back in time and asked Jesus what he was, he wouldn't say "i am christian" He would say he believes in God and worships him alone, which is exactly what Islam is. "muslim" is someone who "submits to the will of God". also perhaps you don't know but Jesus is not only a Holy Prophet of God sent with a message, but he is also the Messiah that will return justice/peace to the world. This is Islam 101.
@alphacodexx fare enough we are all born muslim so they say.Hes called Íosa in Ireland as well by the way and we call mary Mariam too.The Irish word for god is Dia it means many things a most beautiful name of god.In fact the irish saying Dia is alainn means god is beautiful and the firsty letters of each word are also dia with many more besides. So its just a language thing really and by their tribes and languages you shall know them.Dia better than dog.
@hartejoseph thats cool you understand the basics. to go back to your first comment, they would all be Dajjal, or those who constitute anything other than God or more specifically the deception.
@alphacodexx only a week mind can be deceived and those that are deceived are those that forget where they come from.Me I see Dia everywhere its all part of the plan but one mans deception is just a foreign culture. How can you walk the wrong path when it was not your path to begin with.
I would say LaVey drew from Crowley, he idolised and worshipped Egyptian Gods I think. Satanism wasn't codified as a religion until 1966 but some of it's practices and ideas have been around for thousands of years, so I highly doubt he called himself a Satanist as such. I think that is why the media and others associate him with Satanism. But yeah man, I'm like you I don't know much about him, I have tried reading his work but he is far too complex for me to understand.
Firstly, Crowley rhymes with Holy, not Foully. Common mistake, though.
Secondly, his references to 'Human Sacrifice' are metaphors for masturbation and "blood" an allusion to Semen. He often took immense joy in playing these types of jokes on the profane and uninitiated.
As far I as I know, Crowley would not have considered himself a Satanist, since the inverted pentagram represents the triumph of Matter over Spirit, which is a philosophy he didn't agree with, magically or mystically.
I've tried to read some Crowley books and it's impossible, man. It's like trying to read Friedrich Nietzsche, tip of the hat to those that can read and understand it. But, I do make up for my lack of reading by watching documentaries, it's the best I can do.
i have always prefered aleister over anton.cause i didnt like how the cos had rules it reminded me to much of the christian doctrines.cuase aleister had only one rule "do what thou wilt"
Gnosis is a Greek word meaning direct, experiential knowledge. There's knowing something (like knowing 2+2=4) and then there's KNOWING something (like, in a biblical sense). Gnosis is the latter.
Crowley is difficult to understand, that is for sure. An overt Satanist? No, he was RHP to the core. However, his synthesis is far more Satanic than most of those who claim the Sinister outright. In the modern Occult revival, perhaps only Grant has more value to the Satanist than Crowley. He is definitely worth any and all time invested, and the cornerstone of all postmodern occultism. His influence would be comparable to that of Einstein or Freud, within respective fields, of course.
Grant huh? Any particular one you suggest.? I am about half way through your book Jason ( Post modern Satanism) and I still have not been able to figure of what the word " gnosis" means?
May i suggest you read Crowley's "Book 4" before you take up "Magick in theory and in Practice" as it will help you understand the latter more clearly..I found that it helped me. His writing style is typical of the Victorian elaborate prose of his day. Also, I would consider Crowley a Ceremonial Magician/Cabbalist rather than just a Satanist .
I first read "theory and Practice" when I was 13, and found it complicated until I read "Book 4" many years after, then I picked up "theory and Practice" and understood it better.
I remember I had to try to searcht for an Occult Book Store to get it...this is many years before Borders, Barnes and Noble, or Amazon made Occult books available.

In his biography by Richard Cammell" Aleister Crowley, the man,the mage, the poet" the author(who personally knew him) states just that on page 29.
Crowley loved to pull practical jokes and shock the easily offended people of his time.

"Gnosis" refers to the wisdom and understanding imparted to holy men, through devotion/meditation/magic/etc/etc.
I suggest you read the article about it on Thelemapedia.
