Poor Donnie. He was a kid that knew so much and became so famous for it, but had no idea how to apply it; he never knew the difference between intelligence and its application. He's just dealing with life the best way he knows how, like every other person in this wonderful film. Even the dying are still dealing with life, and that's a cold, hard fact.
This is one of those films, and one of those scenes, that transcends what we've ever been shown movies can do. In 100 years they'll still be watching this movie, even if Janet Maslin didn't get it--she'll be dust by then anyway. But that's the risk in taking any art form to the next level--you leave quite a few people behind who can't see what you've done, so they think you've done nothing. At least "Magnolia" as lasted these 10 years. Here's to the next 90.
@greyeyed123 Amen. This film transcends modern expectations, and takes us to another place that art is supposed to be capable of. PTA, like few artists, is an alien \ that was loaned to us for the purpose of healing.
One of my favorite movies ever and one of my favorite movie scenes. I love how Donnie builds up the courage throughout his time at the bar but stand up for himself.
William H. Macy was great in this.

@thesmartape1 it is track 5 on the orchestral score released in 2000, composed by Jon Brion, titled "I've Got a Surprise for You Today"

This doesn't fall under the category of "movies", this is a piece of heaven, a small part of a divine universal truth.
