@Ricksonkimura It landed pretty short compared to other triple digit speed shots, and it also has more spin, which means it doesn't skid as far (or rather, jump in this case) as far before bouncing again. Just the nature of the shot.
@iraklaras99yt - I agree, to me he does not use that shot often enough. I think it would work wonders against Djokovic, if he used it more and used it more up the line, same with his backhand.
@dud321xyz Court speeds at Wimbledon are significantly slower now that the composition of the grass has been altered. After the court surface change a few years ago so is the Aus Open.
that is why i always say: why uncle tony doesnt change his forehand?! i am sure if he doesnt give it that special topspin he has, it would be much better, like this one he hit without lot of topspin
i like the cameras at indian wells and miami since 2010, perfect angle, show spin very well and angles hit. a bit wider-screen as well, looks visually nice on the eye
Yeah I saw Nadal practicing at the London year end masters and he can absolutely smash forehands when he wants to. I think he just plays within himself in the match to maintain consistency.
Well I have seen him pulverize a tennis ball in practice too, its a sight to behold, I love his inside out f/h shot, its amazing, clinical when his on.
Its funny, at 0:20 - 0:21, after he hits the shot, he looks at the raquet to see if he broke a string :) (I assume thats the reason, maybe it was to check if the strings moved, but I like my theory better :) )
Actually surprised someone hasn't brought it up yet, but the reason why it doesn't look 110mph is because of the perspective of the camera. The camera is looking at Nadal from behind, so naturally all his shots look a lot slower because it's harder to visually guage speed. Think about it if you were to look at an arrow being shot when you're looking at it eye level and right behind it compared to looking at it from a top down view, you can easily see how fast it is from the top down view.
@tacticalmarine I counted the frames in a video program and Nadal's 2nd serve took 17 frames to cover the same distance (in the air, no bounce) that his forehand did in just 13 frames. 110mph for the forehand seems reasonable.
As I suspected. Just wanted to confirm that for the people in the past who didn't believe it was 110 mph. Maybe for the people who aren't as used to the angle, they perceive that it's slower simply on the fact that Nadal is in the near court.
Anybody can blast a tennis ball; all you need is strength and most players have it. Hitting hard is not enough to be a good player. Lets not get carried away and start to over estimate players that try to impress hitting the ball with all their being. Against Nadal is a strategy that don't pay because they end up burned out by their own effort while Nadal can keep playing with that intensity for 5 sets and on.....
@YoSoyZuri Of course, the drastically slowed down conditions of the current game (bigger, puffier balls, court surfaces slowed to a crawl) lend a huge hand to helping Rafa's scrambling game. At the year end masters, where they play on a court that could is still somewhat fast by 90's standards, Rafa's success is limited.
Rafa's game would not hold up against Sampras, Becker, Goran, on those super fast indoor courts of the 90's, just as their games would not on modern hard courts or clay.
Also a mighty shot like that is not just about speed but also the placement! Pass certain speed (98mph+ ) it not longer makes much difference. Placement is more important. In Rafa's case, he often give us mind-blowing shots constructed beautifully. He uses speed; but it is the accuracy and placement that impress. Also Rafa incorporates two more weapons: his famous "running forehand" and his "top-spin"; both unique elements of his game that I rather consider!
@tacticalmarine yeah and thats why people underestimate tennis thinking its slow and easy....cause the angle that tv gives for tennis just make everything look slower
@tacticalmarine I was sitting front row for this. I've seen a lot of tennis in my day, including Sampras / Agassi best of 5, Federer, Gonzo, Jimmy Blake, Flip, Safin, Ivanisevic, Courier, and a lot of other big forehands. But this one took the cake...........He hit that so clean. Beauty mate.
@tacticalmarine Actually I would say it's because the speed is measured immediately after the ball leaves the strings, and Nadal's shots have so much spin that by the time they get to the other side of the net they have slowed down considerably.
@JiraiyaSama86 I've seen Nadal practice in person and he can just crush/rope groundies. Incredible spin with a flat ball trajectory, traveling very fast. He hits loopy shots on purpose because more than almost anybody I can think of, and certainly on clay, his point construction takes into account every inch of the court. I have a video of him practicing in Rotterdam on my favorites. You should check it out.
It is possible that its actually 110. the only problem is that Nadal's big shots even at 90 can seem like 80 because of the longer curve trajectory of his shots. if it was straighter, then it'd be unmistakably 90. That's somewhat the problem with Nadal's shots- the spin element makes his ball travel a longer path, hence reduces the effectiveness of the pace, but the spin compensates by making it difficult to just simply attack..
You know, the radar gun has a margin of 3-5mph depending on the gun? He either 107 or 113mph, but he's certainly not far from that 110mph - it's not an eye measurement.
