Neorealist films were usually recorded without sound and then later dubbed. If you watch Fellini's La Strada you'll notice Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart two american actors that didn't speak italian, but were later dubbed for the film. It was common to use american actors in foreign films in order to get wider recognition.
