@lilfredd1393 yeah, but the maemo is really really good, and the response from the screen (besides the fact this is a resistive touchscreen) is quite good, so whatever, but yeah theres no multitouch the only bad thing
@lilfredd1393 capacitive is hyped. resistive is far more accurate, and you can use with gloves/stylus when ur bare fingers not available. and it's nearly identical in response to capacitive.
Perhaps my point was that ANY Windows Phone I've ever come across in the last 4 years has been able to do what this thing does. What's the advantage to spending so much money on this phone?
Meant to down rank you but none the less, this phone better integrates hardware and software seeing as it looks like Nokia will be the supplier of both. Unlike windows mobile which runs on many subpar(minus the hd2) devices.
Fair enough. I guess for a price, you get "better hardware and software integration". I'd rather pay $0 for a WM phone that does the same thing, but that's just me. :/
Keep in mind this phone is unlocked and hasn't been subsidized yet. For what you're getting this phone isn't all that expensive. It's comparable to what's currently available from all of the handset makers really.
I don't care about what awesome features of this phone you won't take advantage of, but you'll never stop the advancement of technology. Your comment is exactly like Bill Gate's famous "640k should be enough for anybody"
Also to answer your question quickly rendering web pages with full flash, multitasking, opening and editing large documents (this thing could easily run AbiWord) and my personal favorite.. EMULATION! Look forward to n64 and psx games on this device
But Windows Mobile CAN render web pages with full flash (don't know why you want this... you get way more ads with full flash), mutitask, open and edit large documents and can emulate pxs games (no n64).
In fact, WM has been able to do this for years. So, yes, this phone might have "better specs" from current WM phones, but nobody has been able to answer my question.
What can it do that current WM phones can't?
I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm usually the first one to buy new technology
Maemo is a full fledged Debian based Linux distro tailored specifically for the n900. So what can you do that WinMo can't? SSH to your home or work PC on the go. Run a full featured terminal, complete with apt-get. Download and install most any app you could on your home PC. Maybe you don't care about these things, maybe this device isn't for you. Use what makes you happy.
P.S. Why do people keep voting him down for asking an honest question?
Thanks for all the details. I guess I was confused at the fact that it seems this phone is been promoted as a regular "consumer" phone, when in fact, it's more of a specialized IT device.
It is more of a geek device. It can be used as a regular consumer device as well though. Although Nokia has admitted that geeks and developers are their main target audience with the n900. Big deal about the n900 is that you can code in python or C, or take your pick, right on the phone and upload your file to your pc. Or even see the result of your bug fixes right on your phone. Gah, never enough room here to say everything you want to say.
If someone is concerned with coding on their mobile phone, why not use a slightly larger device like a netbook? I'd hate to see someone writing code or debugging software on a tiny device like this :o
Most people would write the initial app on their desktop pc, with a full sized keyboard. However, if you try it on your phone and there's a small bug you can fix it right on the phone and see the results instantly. Then just upload your bug fix to OVI, or whatever app store they're using now. I personally hate netbooks, but I can't wait to get my hands on one of these.
Are emulators that different from coding on a device like this? From a practical developer standpoint, I can't see a group of programmers all working on tiny devices day in and day out.
An emulator is for more efficient and produces less strain in the eyes.
I can see a few benefits for such a device, but I can't imagine that's an actual market for these.
You wouldn't be coding on this day in and day out. It's merely a convenience factor. Say I'm at work and I have a project on my home PC. Then I get a great idea for a piece of code that I don't want to forget. I have a mini computer in my pocket. I just code it up on the spot. It's not meant to replace a full on computer. It's meant to give you the same capabilities in the palm of your hand.
Keep in mind too, that I am citing what I would use it for. While Nokia has said it is aimed at geeks and devs, they also say it is great for normal tech enthusiasts who just want an internet device as well. Some people may find typing on the small keyboard irritating. I however, have small hands and my thumbs are the perfect size for slider keyboards. And if you're a Linux fan this is like having a full blown Linux desktop in your pocket.
My point is that you can develop apps for the phone right on the phone and test them immediately. If you're a WinMo kinda guy and don't care about these features don't get the n900. Wait for the next N series phone coming out soon, that will take advantage of the work geeks and devs do with the n900.
its good that there are many phone manufacturer and OS developers out there bringing new content and style in today's smartphone industry. However, the blackberry lives on bcoz of its push capabilities (RIM has its own servers for that), so no matter what kind of up to date phone u have, but if it lacks data plan and push capabilities, these technologies are useless. correct me if i'm wrong, but i dunno which other phones that comes with push services like blackberry does.

this phone's interface looks smoother to do stuff, and i think this has higher 3D graphics than the N97 which means i would get to play more games, and i hate the Symbian cause it feels old now...
Do you think all of your chat programs stay open all the time? Since it will only keep so many apps open at once, it seems like it will sign you out if it isnt open. If it stayed connected that would be cool.
I saw someone where online believe it was on Engadget where they had an n900 running 29 apps at once with no problems. So yeah having a few chat programs open should be no problem.
still trying to figure out copy/paste from that. May be strange if you have to use it in portrait mode all the time. I can fly on my htc hero with one hand.

I understand the specs are "high", but really... why would anyone need a small device that powerful for? Sending email? Listening to an mp3?
Seems like people want computer-like power in a device too small to use as a computer.

It's actually both, for IT and consumer. Nokia will be releasing another device similar to n900 with maemo 6 that's design for consumers. ^^

i compared the n97 mini, n97 and n900 on the nokia site and there is not so much difference if you look at the specifications.
Its the OS and the display, the resolution what makes the difference.
so buy the nokia $900. its better
