  • Great recording of the great Randy Newman song.

  • God bless her so much ... her voice is such a gift!

  • she can make anything song great

  • I think she actually became twice as beautiful as she aged.

  • Simply one of the greatest voices of the second half of the 20th century. R.I.P. Etta, your songs shall live forever

  • che la pace sia con te, RIP !

  • =(

  • R.I.P ETTA!

  • written by an atheist, sung by a saint

  • Etta sings this song....

  • fucking great !

  • @Mahim1968 I listen to this upload every day. Thanks again for uploading it.

  • funny thought i just had, Randy's version is chilling because of the lack of emotion in his voice, Etta's is chilling because there is so much emotion. Shows you the things great artists can do to a song.

No one punches a phrase home like Etta James.

  • @TheP00pBandit I'd like to offer my thoughts in response to yours. I want to be clear that I intensely dislike anyone telling me how to interpret art. That is NOT my intention with regard to your interpretation.

I just want to offer something (from the experience as a musician), while Etta James version is VERY hard hitting blues, and really well done. Randy chose a tempo (and as you say, a tone of voice), that I believe was intentionally slow He WANTED listeners to really think about the words

  • @Mahim1968 "God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers?"

It would be more accurate to say: There are many amongst us that have no need for god(s). Most amongst those of us that have decided we don't need god(s) have realized the belief in invisible pink Unicorns is not only as probable, but entirely ridiculous to the point of being a certainty of being impossible.

  • @yourtreat2 When I posted this video I had found that quote by Nietzsche and I thought it could reinforce the point that if god existed, we've already beaten and milked the idea of him/her/it to death already.

  • @Mahim1968 Thanks you VERY much for posting the song, and the mentioning the author of the quote.

I was actually thinking of posting a humorous response to the quote today. It goes:

    Jimi killed God!!!

(I think you know what I'm talking about. If you don't give me a shout.) --

I was listening to the Randy Newman version (which I very much like because of the very slow tempo. However, I'm a blues lover, and Etta did well, too!)

Thanks very much again. - Regards, T2

  • @yourtreat2 I think you're talking about: Hendrix killed Clapton, right?

  • @Mahim1968 No doubt.

The story was told by a drummer who eventually became the drummer of the "Yes"

Paraphrasing & very much shortening his story:(uploaded onto YT)

"So, Jimi asked the band (i.e. Cream), before the concert, if they'd mind if he could come up & jam with them at some point. But nobody asks that kind of thing of Cream, as "Clapton is God" & you don't mess with god. So JImi gets up plays and does ALL his moves. EC's jaw & his hands drop.. EC just walks off the stage stunned"

    "

  • @Mahim1968

My apologies. Folowing uo on my previous post, the story of Jimi killing God was told by Chris Squire , the bass guitarist of "Yes".It's a wonderfully amusing interview.he tells SEVERAL amusing stories. It's REALLY worth watching. It's here: watch?v=eo-lBnTc3So

  • @Mahim1968

Soz. I should have said, PM (not previous pos)t. Soz, I forgot we conversed via 2 PM's..

I must be coming down with what da ya call it??? LOL

  • @Mahim1968 Well Said. Greatcut, great poetry, great uote

  • @yourtreat2 I used to care whether Atheist heard the Gospel and believed in Jesus Christ, now honestly, I don't... Just like all the paint never makes it to the masterpiece, some people are just not chosen to believe. I'm just thankful I am... God is nothing to you because you are nothing to God. There really is no human compassion that can change it so this has become my attitude towards Atheist.

  • @numuvs Look at it this way. You'd be a miserable Atheist. I know it and you know it.

As long as you keep you religion to yourself, it's fine by me, just as I have no requirement that you refrain from your beliefs.

RE: African American Gospel music. It Interests me for many reasons. First, as a blues player for more than 40 years I learn from it. Blues and African American Gospel of music have the same origins and a historic legacy of significance that interests me from a historical perspective

  • @yourtreat2 Truth is Gospel and Blues was never African American music... it's Negro music created by people who were not citizens but actually property in America. Most were 5th and 6th generation and history tells us in emancipation they became American citizens. American Negro's or Black Americans is a more correct term because the term African American didn't exist until the 1980's.

I would be miserable being atheist and miserable being religious!

  • @numuvs "Truth is Gospel "

Is an excellent example of why I don't make it my mission to debate arrogant religious people who believe they have the market on truth cornered.

You can go on being as tautological as you please. I don't give a damn about it.

I'll simply say that you don't know what the fuck you are talking about, and leave it at that as I have no interest in educating someone as arrogant as yourself.

  • More truth in these lyrics than a little bit !

  • Magnificent.

  • Randy Newman, the writer of the song, has stated in interviews that he's an atheist. This song imagines how God would respond to mankind's question about God allowing man's inhumanity to man.

  • @westeightyone and MillerSting

It always amazes me how atheists can postulate that if God exists, then He's a cruel manipulative bastard. Then, in the same breath, wine how could a caring God allow bad things happen to good people and man's inhumanity to man. Well, it's called free will.

Secular Society is just as big an collective asshole. You allow good people to suffer at the whim of bad people and allow man's inhumanity to man. You call it "it's there right.".

  • @Honestinwilkesbarre and whatever imaginary friends you may have. It doesn't surprise me in the least that you would think that it makes sense to compare Secular Society and ' God' . Secular society may well be a collective asshole. Secular society is only human after all.

Following your so-called logic, God is just as big an asshole as collective secular society because

He / She / It is only God . When did your God go from being all wise, all knowing and all powerful to 'only' ?

  • The woman's talent is incomparable, and this song gives me chills too because it reveals god, if he/she/it exists, as a cruel manipulator of human fate...sing it girl! It is so on the money!

  • no way this is funky as hell! the other is a disney version

  • Wow! What can I say but Wow! She takes that song and runs with it, all the way into pure cynicism! I love it!

  • I thought I would also comment about TALENT--see she was BORN talented. it is a gift from....who knows...God, fate, Luck. EVERYONE and EVERYTHING you HEAR (or try NOt to hear would be better) from MTV to DISNET TV...Miley, j Bieber, LADY Gaga, Katy Perry, and even (god don't insult her...remember the last time) Taylor Swift are MANUIFACTURED by publicity people, agents, and stylists, marketing managers and GREED., None of them have her voice, few do.

WHy can't it get back to being about TALENT?

  • JAM

  • Haunting, beautiful, terrifyingly wonderful. It made me cry....

  • Now THIS is a COVER...everyone else's cover is SHXT.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic who originally did this song? Who wrote it?

  • @tommy2chips Originally written by and pertformed by RANDY NEWMAN around 1971.

  • @tommy2chips Randy Newman...

  • Wow. Best Randy Newman cover ever?

  • @doktorzoom

Check out Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee's cover of Randy Newman's ' Sail Away ' song.

  • Exactly. (All) theology is really really bad.

  • @LLCisyouandme

You're missing the whole point of the song.

  • @4EverInHim And to those who do not? What do you wish upon the majority of mankind? This is the root of my problem with organized religion. What of the IRA vs the catholics in northern Ireland where there was a bombing this week. What of jihad? The crusades, the spanish inquisition? How many people must die in the name of jesus or allah or any other god. I have been to modern and traditional christian services by the way and if you think that music rocks, well.....

  • wow she sounds great here (not that i'm saying she doesnt elsewhere, lol)

  • @playgirlc She tears it up into pieces like ONLY Etta can do

  • newman...the best

  • She's terrifying, in a good way. Great song !

  • @nadjazz absolutely! i get chills everytime i hear this song :-}

  • one of my favorite songs ever.
