  • Viz made a much better version of this. It was exactly the same up until the boy goes cycling off to the shop; he then gets hit by a car and killed. His mum is later shown using Yellow Pages to find the funeral directors - brilliant!

  • If my kid got me an R1866 signal box for my birthday he'd get a dry slap. Dad's birthdays are for hookers and special brew.

  • @callinstead09 Are you John Vennables trying to chalk up brownie points with your parole officer by posting insincere self-rightous deviod-of-humour comments on youtube? You are aren't you?

  • that dude at the end is just like my dad, i swear to god

  • Why didn't he just Google it?

  • @wikichris Well despite popular belief, Google was around in 1992 so he could have done exactly that, trouble is like most 14 year olds of the era we'd already maxed out our download limits on internet pornography.

  • @billiepipersteeth I don't think Google was around in 1992 to be honest...more like 1998.

  • i bet that kid got bullied rotten at school

  • lovely advert, but the Dad could have said thanks. Ungrateful git.

  • R-186 signal box.

    Permanantly etched on my brain.

  • I used to love this advert, it is so lovely and gentle and heartwarming. The ''mum'' looked just like my mum as well back then...I miss ads like this.....

  • Adverts like these make you feel good.

  • Who would have thought that Harry '[hack you up with a hachet' Lonsdale, owned a model railway shop as a side line!

  • @acme181169 Yes who would have though it. In fact, when Harry Lonsdale suspected Smithy was on the take and invited him round to provide an explanation, Harry didn't think that he did a very good job of it, so he grabbed the nearest thing to hand, which just so happened to be a 15 inch black carriage from a First Great Western InterCity 125 Executive, and proceeded to beat poor old Smithy to death with.

  • This reminds me that I need to put some signals and signal boxes on my layout

  • FOR THE WIN LOL!!!

  • Before the internet.....

  • Mr Bennett out of Take Hart. Have to admit he used to do my head in.

  • I used to work at this shop in Potters Bar after the advert was filmed. It was called Oakmere Hobbies & Crafts. There was a framed photo behind the counter showing the actor and scene set up. The shop owner was a nice friendly guy.

  • Great they got one mum CLASSIC

  • Ah... nostalgia.

    5*

    Bring it back!

  • What a lovely advert..

  • Who did the voice-over for these ads? It sounds a bit like Joss Acklund, but I don't think it is...

  • @welshfilmbuff

You're right - it DOES sound like Joss Ackland! Good spotting!

  • lol thats cool

  • Loved this advert, didnt know the shop was in Potters Bar, sad its not there any more!

  • awesome, I remember feeling so jealous of that guy's train set, it's massive!

  • christ i remeber this still being shown in the 90's :D

  • Good old Yellow pages! :D Its a shame, there are hardly any shops like that left in the UK nowerdays ;(

  • "Oh..hello Ben"....could he of acted anymore disappointed to see his own son? He doesn't deserve that vibrating train.

  • Yes, great memories. This advert was rereleased after a furore that the dad doesn't say thankyou.. a final scene was added with an overdone " THANKS SON" at the end

  • I remember this advert when i was a kid lol! Its crazy how silly things like this stick with you!!

  • I bet the next thing the dad said was "You dipstick! It was the ENGINE SHED I wanted. That's no tea for you my boy"

  • Isnt Mr Bennet from take Hart, Alvin Stardust?

  • The Shop in this Advert was the "Hobbies and Crafts" Shop in Potters Bar Hertfordshire, Opposite the Bus Garage. I was Walking Past it at 6pm one Evening when they were Filming. Sadly the Shop has now Closed. The Bit where the Boy is Riding his Bike in the Street, is a completely different Town.

  • @PIGGIE58 the boy is riding outside my old house in mansfield ave, east barnet, just down the road from ps bar and the car in the background is my vauxhall chevette 2300 hs. the film crew were going to use my mothers irish wolfhound running up with the boy but the filming was running late.

  • Tight arsed kid! He could at least have wrapped it up!

  • 'Have you got an R186 Signal Box?'

    'Well let's see...'

YOU KNOW YOU'VE GOT ONE, YOU REACH RIGHT FOR IT!

He's just taunting that poor kid!

  • oooh

  • thats a great advert

    thanks for uploading it

  • What a lovely advert. The boy giving his dad a signal box for a birthday present. How lovely, indeed. Of course, it does have a heart-warming feel to it, though.

  • Sorry,, "Mr Bennet", I mean!

  • Correct, his name is Colin Bennett. Anyone remember him from "You should be so lucky" as well?

  • Hey, wasn't the guy playing the father the caretaker, "Mr Benn" in Take Hart??

  • thanks for the upload. hard to find this though. try puting signal box or hornby in the title. Cheers!

  • Just did that, thanks!
