I am in the minority fo people who think George Lazenby was the best Bond. After that, Dalton, Craig, Connery, Brosnan and Moore, but even Moore was a great Bond. I guess I'm just an optomist
I agree. Best Bond, Best Bond movie, Best Bond girl, and the whole film does not date like the others because it was made way before it's time and that's probably why the audiences did not take to it at the time. They should never have let the press on to set. It caused a lot of misery all round.
HOWEVER, not to be a wet blanket, but there's the glitch at the very first, not catching the first measure or so of the score. Then there's other glitches near the end, particular at 2:11, where it just skips a measure or so, then also it does actually follow-thru to the actual end of the Main Title score, but instead truncates it bit. Again, not to be gratuitously nit-picky, BUT: WTF is up with all THAT, gfdi!? If u're gonna post it, post it f'ing right, again, gfdi!
OHMSS is still, to this day, the best (i.e., best-realized) Bond film of all time, as good as the others (especially the Connery ones and Dan Craig's) nonetheless also are. George Lazenby did a fine (if not indeed superb) job in his first acting role. Diana Rigg is, well Diana Rigg. Telly is great. The direction & editing is crisp. And John Barry's score, as with virtually all his work, is simply magnificent! Thanks for posting!
I think this is the most underrated movie in the series. If George Lazenby wasn't such a pain to work with, maybe EON would have continued the series with him.I liked the fact that he gave Bond a kind of vulnerability that only recently we saw again with Daniel Craig.
@sugreev2001 It wasn't that Lazenby was such a pain to work with. He just mistakenly thought the series had run-its-course, and didn't want to be saddled & typecast with it. Big mistake on his part, bless his Aussie heart. His Bond is a good as Sean's (which is, of course, mind u, saying a lot!), and, yes, ideally, he should've stayed with the series. But OHMSS remains an absolute cinematic GEM! Almost, if perhaps not quite, flawless!
I agree, Lazenby was a very good Bond in O.H.M.S.S. The theme is excellent as is Louis Armstrong's We Have All The Time In The World, the last song he did before he died.
The Best Plot, Score, Woman, Villian, Locations, Opening Credits Sequence (Can you believe USA Network edited out the nipples? IT'S PG FOR GOD SAKES!), Lair, Battles, Stunts, I can go on and on and on.
George Lazenby wasn't as good as Sean Connery, but he could have been if he'd stayed on. So much potential was wasted there.
all the bond movies are good. some better than others, but they are all good to some extent. the three films i personally dont like is die another day, a view to a kill, and the man with the golden gun
this is one of the best. don't post if you don't like it. shut the fuck up. the only bond film you can "hate" is that god-awful abomination of incest called "Die another Day"
must agree...moore too cartoonish....connery too serious...dalton too blah...craig way gay (this is from a fag)...niven too wooden...sellers too ernest...lorre... no one remebers this do they?
Yeah all my friends are Bond fans now that Craig is playing him, their hearts are a-flutter. Yes Niven and Sellers played Bond in the original Casino Royale. Peter Lorre played him in a TV pilot that I think you can see a clip of on YouTube:)
sellers wasn't bond he impersonated bond his character was evelyn tremble. the original casino royale was so loosely based on the book i dont regard it as a true bond film. nor was the latest casino royale based on the book but at least it falls in line.
I would not claim that he was the best Bond however is performance has been hugely under-rated. I would have like to see him in a few more Bond films.
Didn't use to like this but have grown to admire it more over time. Similar to For Your Eyes Only with the ski and bobsleigh chases and the lack of gadgets. Bond feels more vulnerable. Very good character development and brilliant support from Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas.
I didn't like the parts where Bond dressed in a kilt, or the villain's stupid plot. But I wouldn't say its a bad film by any measure. I really liked the bobsled chase.
I still didn't like it. Or Blofeld whispering hypnotic messages over the intercom, saying "When you came here you hated chickens. I have taught you to love chickens!" :p
I have to agree this wasnt really a top bond film. didnt think lazenby was the type to be bond mainly cos he wasnt convincing enuff as an englishmen since he's australian. 2ndly he didnt exactly have that english charm & suaveness as connery did. so I still say connery was the best out of em all.
3rdly terry salvas was probably the worst actor to play as blofeld. The only actor that shined in the film was diana riggs. who can forget her as emma peel eh lads?
The best of all the Bond films and the best theme tune in my opinion. The shot of Lazenby hanging off the clocks hands and almost pulling the clock to run backwards (0:33) is a great image. It was felt by the producers that the Bond films were now over reliant on gadgets at the expense of story. This film was meant to be a return to a stronger narrative base with the 'new' Bond. Hence Lazenby was supposed to, literaly, turn back the clock to the original style of the earlier films
HAHA OH MY GOD, 7 years of being a Bond Fan and I only just worked out what 'this never happened to the other fella meant' he meant Sean Connery being BOND!! HAHA omg, silly me, lol. i never really knew what he meant by that, but wow great first liner! - yeah i forgive lazenby now after that small small difference - WOW
OHMSS represents an identity crisis in the Brocolli camp. How to deal with a change in actor and a change in decade ? The opening sequence has almost apologetic references to the old Bond decade but the John Barry theme still tingles the bits that other themes dont. We are unfairly disparaging towards Lazenby. Successor Bonds were able to learn from the mistakes of his producers. "This never happened to the other fella". No, but to be fair, the other fella didn't have a DB7 or Diana Rigg either.
I always felt this movie was underrated. It works well as a Bond film
The truth is whoever followed Connery was going to have and up hill struggle.
How anyone could say this was a bad Bond after Roger Moore's terrible run of joke Bond movies is really beyond me(I'll give Live and Let Die a pass, just)
The ending was the best as well.
I'd like to see it remade with Daniel though, just for the ski chase.
J'aime vraiment l'air et le film avec Coodjak XD et frosshteen :P mais je déteste George lazenby et Diana rigg elle ressemble dun lapin et lui dun commique
Excellent Opening!! The prevalence of the Union Jack symbol and the clock from London's Big Ben Tower were noticed well in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" from 1969. Spectacular Color Changes!! A Brilliant 6!!
The 1969 bond classic On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of the best underappriciated bond movies ever made. With George Lazenby as the George Clooney version of James Bond. and Telly Savalas as the real Blofeld he's a lot more better than Donald Pleasance in Y.O.L.T and Charles Gray in D.A.F. check this out on dvd if you like.
This Bond is my favourite, it still holds up today - from the music, to the action sequences (ahead of their time), to Diana Rigg's performance, to the shattering ending.
I think it was a mistake showing clips of the Connery films. Should have let this film stand on its own. Not be reminded. And to think OHMSS was followed by the awful Diamonds Are Forever.
Anyone know how the effects for this intro were made? Some pretty advanced stuff here for the 60s. The hour glass must have had coloured sand when it was ebbing away, like a blue screen type thing, some of it gets stuck if you notice as it fades to the next section at around 1:33.
Perhaps lyrics were written for the theme to increase the royalty rate. Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics to the original Star Trek theme so he got a cut from the theme every time it was played, even though the lyrics weren't actually used on the series.
