The most important thing I'd say is that a lot of songs (like a lot of art in general) are deliberately vague, deliberately ambivalent. They're not MEANT to be understood precisely. They're not like the directions for building a rocket ship, or whatever. Think of I Am The Walrus, by the Beatles. It doesn't really mean anything (but it's great).
