That's what the two movies do - they condense most of the series and expound upon certain details. Nothing much new happens in terms of plot developments.

I think it's the other way around, Gurren Lagann is 2007 I believe, and Needless is 2009, regardless, there are 2 other factors to validate that Gainax did not copy this off of Needless. 1) It's just really GAR, there are several animes with extremely manly people and fight scenes, Gainax probably just thought this up themselves. 2) It's Gainax lol, they are really spontaneous and over the top always coming up with some crazy unexpected & innovative stuff, if anything G.G.G was the inspiration.
