"as a general rule of thumb, if you have an overdrive pedal, you wanna have a noise gate immediately there after" -> I'm not sure if that should be a rule of thumb, because Noise Reduction has drawbacks. One of them (especially if your threshold is high) is the tail of a sustained note will just cut out (interpretted as noise). Also, subtle artificial harmonics are harder to acheive. So yes, it should be right after the dist' as far as pedal order goes, but it's not a "should always be on" pedal
I bought the behringer and i had a ns-2 that a friend of mine lent me and yeah they ARE exactly the same xD mine cost 25$ through ebay and his 100$ hahaha the only difference is the behringer is made with a cheaper metal as in fact the boss is very very solid you could kill someone with the boss hahaha but both excellent pedals :) oh and thanks for the vid if it wasn't for you I wouldn't save 75$ xD
hi tone king , quick question, i have a peavey 5150 mk1 which is a well known pre-amp noise monster. if i were to chose only one gate location (due to the fact i only have one gate pedal ) ,,, which one would be best , i also religiously use a zakk wylde overdive as only a clean boost but does have noise, i feel like im stuck between a rock and a hard place, this opinion would be a huge... massive help thanks.

Dear tone king i use a number of pedals that i use. should put all the pedals in the effect loop and then have my guitar plugged into in the input would that be better to do? i really dont get this =\
how come on my guitar when i touch one of the metal parts of my bridge pick up my amp buzzes super loud. its really annoying. also if i put my finger on the screw that raises and lowers the pick up posistion is stops the buzzing.
its really really really annoying and it makes me not wanna learn guitar at all.
it does this whether i have pedals or not. would a noise gate fix this. its not a problem of too much noisy pedals or anything idk what the fucking issue is but i cant stand it
Hey tone king, great great vid man. Awesome reviews... I have a quick question. If I only own the Boss NS2. Can I use the pedal's "input/output" through the front end of my amp, and use the "send/return" from the NS2 to the FX loop of my amp Both at the same time? Just want to clarify that...Thanks for the help man.

TTK - it's maybe pointless using 2 gates in that way - try an NS2 like this: guitar - ns2 in, send - dirt - amp, then out of the loop (if its series): to NS2 return, then NS2 out to mod and delay etc to FX loop return. very cool series of vids. Note to beginners: keep the threshold on your noise suppressor as low as possible without getting background noise. This way you can keep your sustain as high as possible.

the MXR smartgate saved my life when we played a show live with bad grounding at the venue, i always had a noise issue, but that pedal works better than any BOSS pedal ive ever used....MXR for the win
very nice, always wondered what these pedals do. Any negatives on particular effects while using these as far as chorus, delay, sonic maximizer? Thanks, I am a noob to a lot of these pedals.
You can hear a little fizz right after you stop playing for half a second as the reducer tries to cut the signal. Are there any of these pedals that cut the sound instantly?
I think if you put the treshhold higher it is going to cut the noise sooner. I have a beta aivin ng-100 and you can adjust the time when will the noise gate close and open
@iscareuiknowit if you have the Boss Ns-2 turning the decay knob the whole way down will cut the signal much sooner. almost instantly. its good to run two pedals though to get a really tight cut. i personally run an mxr smart gate into an ibanez ts9dx tube screamer into a fullbore metal pedal into the boss ns2. it gives me sustain when needed but very clean cuts as well.
@iscareuiknowit if you set it up well this one does, I love mine, I use the loop for dist and overdrive pedals and have no problem, it doesn't do that, even at very high gain high volume levels when playing live. Immediately dead quiet. Essential for my setup.
Very useful video, the only thing is if im not running any pedals through the effects loop and dont have any gain on the amp do i really need a second noise gate?
Very useful video, the only thing is if im not running any pedals through the effects loop and dont have any gain on the amp do i really need a second noise gate?
with the boss, there are multiple ways to use it althought most people only use it as a "gate", it has its own loop that will silence all the pedals in it, not just before it. two very different ways it seems but i dont even have it ive just used it,
Damn you! haha. This was really informative, but I guess now i'll be picking up another ISP decimator to put into my effects loop as well as after my tube screamer.
nice video, i want to buy a boss ns-2. I have a noisy pedal and noisy overdrive channel on my amp. Is it possible to reduce the both noise (pedal&) with the boss using the send - return and input - output ?
i have in iSP decimater. im running guitar into tuner > fulltone fat boost >fulltone ocd > boss flanger > amp. should i put it into the fx loop or after the flanger? the amp is a mesa dual rectifier halfstack
If i have an effects pedal that is causing a very noticeable scream of feedback through a large guitar rig, the boss pedal will cut out the screaming in the gaps where im not playing, I mean the feedback is an actual scream, which when running through a venues front of house,is painful :D
I am using an Ephiphone SG mostly
A Zoom FX pedal,
And a Marshall JVM Rig
Will it cut the screams out completely, and not effect my tone (with the right set threshold)?
I'm using a half stack that gets noisy at high volumes, and no pedals except a volume pedal. Should I put a noise gate at the front of the amp or in an effects loop by itself? I've never used a loop before.
@youngdrom Does it have a quicker response? Why is it better? I'm currently exploring the possibilities, but I haven't been able to test the ISP Decimator.
@johnrusschen The decimator eliminates the noise without reducing the sustain or modifying the signal. That's all you can expect from a noise gate and it does it perfectly.
I've really been looking for a pedal switcher or looper. Do you know of any brands or what they're referred to? I'd like to have maybe a 3 or 4 channel true bypass channel looper.
@lmsjr Enough to know that you're too awesome to care!!! You will never know how much you're vids have helped me understand tone even more after 10 years of playing!
i have a rocktron "hush" at the front (not the back like it tells you) and it seems to work pretty good but i was gonna get another for the end of the chain and my amp does have the "loop" feature....is the "hush" pedal worth even keeping????...and is the behringer worth even buying...iv heard alot of different views on the behringer.....
I've had the Boss NS-2 Noise suppressor at the front of my effects chain for three years and it doesn't kill my tone or affect my attack (that can be heard on my site). I follow the manual in how I run my board. Everything works great. Wouldn't touch anyone else's noisegate, but that is just me.
Do you mean behringer delay pedals and reverb pedals? I have a vd400 analogue delay from behringer in the loop of my triple x, sounds wonderful. If you run it in front of the amp the repeats are distorted as well sounding like mud.
In my opinion, and again, totally my opinion, i'd put one after a very high gain pedal like a tubescreamer or a super overdrive pedal. They can potentially cause a whole lot of fuzz, so you toss one of these after, you're good.
I am surprised you didn't mention the loss of attack or sustain with some noise gate pedals. I would go with an eBtech hum eliminator in my chain first followed by a noise gate only if it is necessary. Also it is useful to use the Boss send return to connect this to ONLY your gain pedals (I.E. distortion, OD, Compression, Boost) and allow your signal to process unchanged to the remaining effect pedals. The loss of attack and sustain is a big deal.
he said on his website that there was one pedal he didn't test because it sucked the tone from his sound, and he insinuated that it was the hush, and i also know from personal experience that they are not as good as the boss etc. rocktron does make some good products, but the hush.. well, sucks, lol
first and foremost, i recommend the isp noise decimator. it cuts out the noise and leaves nothing but tone. dead silent between notes.
the boss noise suppressor tends to cut tone. it sells for $130.
ALSO,
you do NOT need 2 noise gates if you have the ISP G STRING pedal (yeah, funny name). it's a step up from regular noise decimator. it goes before and after the effects loop. it sells for $220.
TK, I'd love to see a review of the Electro-Harmonix 22 Caliber Power Amp. It's a 22 watt amp head in a pedal. You should check it out. BTW, it's in pg. 100-102 in your Musician's Friend Holiday Guide you got. It sounds very interesting.
The thing is, it's not actually a pedal. It's quite neat though for practicing without powering up the Krank and wasting valuable tube life. I have one =)
Music is art not science. You can't quantify tone. An artist will pick and choose the equipment he or she likes based on artistic style, creativity and personal taste. It's the same as a painter chooses the type and paint (oil, water based) the brushes they use all to CREATE art. I don´t want to sound like Jimi or Eddie. I want to create my own tone, and I will asses each piece of equipment on it's own merits. To say "Brand A sucks" is simply limiting your own creativity.
Thanks TK! but what about say: the ISP decimator in the loop of your Randall RM100 with a super hi-gain module of any type? also wich one will not color the tone most? THANKS TK! These are a few of my favorite things! (broke into chorus) haha
Get the MXR or ISP. The Boss and Behringer suck your tone bad like any other boss pedals. The MXR is true bypass and i think the ISP is to. Thats what i would do. also just putting this out there, Behringer and Boss pedals suck. Boss is like the cheapest company in the world just everyone thinks they are amazing. They kill your tone and arent true bypass. If your gonna build a pedalboard save up the extra money and do it right the 1st time. I had boss pedals and i sold them and am buying good 1s
Boss pedals are NOT the worst pedals in the world. Please stop spouting that nonsense as its not true. If you think that true bypass is the way to a sure fire tone you are horribly mistaken.
I can't really count the amount of people that rely on a boss pedal to add another layer of sound to their tone.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well lets look at how many people switched from boss. hmm, Joe Satriani for example, uses his vox pedals and some ibanez and Electro harmonix stuff. Zakk Wylde switched to MXR. Jeff Hanneman from slayer uses MXR. the list just goes on. And boss isnt the worst pedal company just like the 2nd to worst infront of Danelectro
No because you don't fully understand what you're talking about. Look at a lot of stage setups for actual touring musicians. Mostly Boss style pedals. Why? Because they're cheap. reliable, readily available and once you're no longer a bedroom boutique warrior they sound about the same as 'expensive' pedals in a live mix.
No. NOTHING sounds as good as a tubescreamer or a Phase 90. Oh and also if you look at peoples live setups that actually have good tone they either dont use Boss pedals or if they do they are really old boutique ones that actually sounded good. Then boss went to complete shit.
Nothing sounds like the circuit that you refer to as the "Tube Screamer" and nothing sounds like the
"Phase 90". Brand name has nothing to do with that.
Tone comes from the fingers, effects simply keep things interesting and the amp is for you to be heard louder. The sooner you learn that mr "I dont have any videos of my godly tone on youtube"
There is no such thing as TONE in your fingers!!!! The "tone" is skill...If you dont have skill you will sound bad but if you have a lot of skill you still can't make a roland cube sound like a Marshall plexi or a fender frontman sound like a hot rod deville.
Seriously? Tone is the LAST thing you have to worry about when writing music. It starts in your head, goes to your fingers, and then other peoples ears. The first two steps are more important than the last one.
It doesn't matter if you write on a johnson 10 watt solid state amp or a diezel herbert, if the music in your head can't get to your fingers then what is the point?
You should probably stop worrying about pedals and amps and focus more on the music, because I sense you've forgotten it.
You can give a beginner a gibson les paul and a marshall silver jubilee, and his tone might be good, but its his technique (vibrato, bends etc), is what makes him sounds bad.
Give Stevie ray vaughan a squire started pack, his tone itself won't be amazing, but yuou'll know its srv playing but his technique, his squire pack won't sound like a jubilee but he will make it sound good, just not tone wise.
can i hook these up to the loud mouth bitch in my office???

nice video, i want to buy a boss ns-2. I have a noisy pedal and noisy overdrive channel on my amp. Is it possible to reduce the both noise (pedal&) with the boss using the send - return and input - output ?
Sorry for my bad english. :)

i have in iSP decimater. im running guitar into tuner > fulltone fat boost >fulltone ocd > boss flanger > amp. should i put it into the fx loop or after the flanger? the amp is a mesa dual rectifier halfstack
ripcliffburtonrip 1 year ago
If i have an effects pedal that is causing a very noticeable scream of feedback through a large guitar rig, the boss pedal will cut out the screaming in the gaps where im not playing, I mean the feedback is an actual scream, which when running through a venues front of house,is painful :D
I am using an Ephiphone SG mostly
A Zoom FX pedal,
And a Marshall JVM Rig
Will it cut the screams out completely, and not effect my tone (with the right set threshold)?

Wow! You almost cranked a 55 watt tube amp :O

I'm using a half stack that gets noisy at high volumes, and no pedals except a volume pedal. Should I put a noise gate at the front of the amp or in an effects loop by itself? I've never used a loop before.
sathorael 1 year ago
so the boss ns-2 is better than the mxr smart gate???? I need your opinion sir tone king !! :) been watching alot of your vids for the past months :)
alapunk13 1 year ago
I think the ISP Decimator is the best noise gate pedal on the marcket.
youngdrom 1 year ago 14
@youngdrom I've read this all over the internet. I suppose it must be true.
maydecember513 1 year ago
@youngdrom Does it have a quicker response? Why is it better? I'm currently exploring the possibilities, but I haven't been able to test the ISP Decimator.
johnrusschen 1 year ago
@johnrusschen The decimator eliminates the noise without reducing the sustain or modifying the signal. That's all you can expect from a noise gate and it does it perfectly.
youngdrom 1 year ago
I've really been looking for a pedal switcher or looper. Do you know of any brands or what they're referred to? I'd like to have maybe a 3 or 4 channel true bypass channel looper.

@bfv102290 I got a Carl Martin Combinator, which I love. Check out the Octaswitch as well. Great stuff

i have a rocktron "hush" at the front (not the back like it tells you) and it seems to work pretty good but i was gonna get another for the end of the chain and my amp does have the "loop" feature....is the "hush" pedal worth even keeping????...and is the behringer worth even buying...iv heard alot of different views on the behringer.....
zoidburg111 1 year ago
Tone King. Have you tried the DECIMATOR G STRING PEDAL?
It is supposed to work a lot better than the Boss, MXR and it has loop connections.
frankdominick 2 years ago
I've had the Boss NS-2 Noise suppressor at the front of my effects chain for three years and it doesn't kill my tone or affect my attack (that can be heard on my site). I follow the manual in how I run my board. Everything works great. Wouldn't touch anyone else's noisegate, but that is just me.
Ninjaro 2 years ago
what effect does the Behringer have on delay and reverb in the effects loop and how can you configure it for optimum sound?
moonsire66 2 years ago
Do you mean behringer delay pedals and reverb pedals? I have a vd400 analogue delay from behringer in the loop of my triple x, sounds wonderful. If you run it in front of the amp the repeats are distorted as well sounding like mud.
JoePerry4Life1 1 year ago
Where abouts should i put a noise gate on my board? Very usefull vid thanks
slawter45 2 years ago
In my opinion, and again, totally my opinion, i'd put one after a very high gain pedal like a tubescreamer or a super overdrive pedal. They can potentially cause a whole lot of fuzz, so you toss one of these after, you're good.
Spade103XBL 2 years ago
In front of the amp if the noise is from your guitar, if you want to quiet amp his put it in the loop.
JoePerry4Life1 1 year ago
can you explain in a video the ''shielding'' of a guitar
Fhernand000 2 years ago
I am surprised you didn't mention the loss of attack or sustain with some noise gate pedals. I would go with an eBtech hum eliminator in my chain first followed by a noise gate only if it is necessary. Also it is useful to use the Boss send return to connect this to ONLY your gain pedals (I.E. distortion, OD, Compression, Boost) and allow your signal to process unchanged to the remaining effect pedals. The loss of attack and sustain is a big deal.

What about Rocktron Hush pedals?
southamericanrocker 2 years ago
he said on his website that there was one pedal he didn't test because it sucked the tone from his sound, and he insinuated that it was the hush, and i also know from personal experience that they are not as good as the boss etc. rocktron does make some good products, but the hush.. well, sucks, lol

No ISP? Seriously?
BlueBarrier782 2 years ago 5
where do you get all the money for all that gear!!
wackyzachy731 2 years ago
first and foremost, i recommend the isp noise decimator. it cuts out the noise and leaves nothing but tone. dead silent between notes.
the boss noise suppressor tends to cut tone. it sells for $130.
ALSO,
you do NOT need 2 noise gates if you have the ISP G STRING pedal (yeah, funny name). it's a step up from regular noise decimator. it goes before and after the effects loop. it sells for $220.
guitar4life9 2 years ago 2
if you want to spend even more money, i recommend the ISP Decimator ProRack G Noise Reduction. it sells for $420.
but really, the ISP G string will do the job.
guitar4life9 2 years ago
TK, I'd love to see a review of the Electro-Harmonix 22 Caliber Power Amp. It's a 22 watt amp head in a pedal. You should check it out. BTW, it's in pg. 100-102 in your Musician's Friend Holiday Guide you got. It sounds very interesting.
TheGamingGuitarist 2 years ago
The thing is, it's not actually a pedal. It's quite neat though for practicing without powering up the Krank and wasting valuable tube life. I have one =)
nght5tlkr 2 years ago
Music is art not science. You can't quantify tone. An artist will pick and choose the equipment he or she likes based on artistic style, creativity and personal taste. It's the same as a painter chooses the type and paint (oil, water based) the brushes they use all to CREATE art. I don´t want to sound like Jimi or Eddie. I want to create my own tone, and I will asses each piece of equipment on it's own merits. To say "Brand A sucks" is simply limiting your own creativity.
tekgnome 2 years ago
Well, i think for Noise Gates, it's pretty
straight forward, 'yes or no'. Definitely
a good point though.

If Bugera works for YOU, use it!
If Mesa works for you, USE it!
Bottom line: USE WHATEVER WORKS FOR YOU!
ace69er 2 years ago 2
I do not agree the Behringer is a carbon copy of the Boss Noise Suppressor. The Behringer lowers the gain if you turn the threshold up.
DaveDoggOwns 2 years ago
with the voodoo lab switcher can i put more then 1 pedal in a single setting?
SkipperDiscoLand 2 years ago
Hm you should have showed how/that an agressive noise gate can be used to tighten up rhythm playing. :)
veers0r 2 years ago
Thanks TK! but what about say: the ISP decimator in the loop of your Randall RM100 with a super hi-gain module of any type? also wich one will not color the tone most? THANKS TK! These are a few of my favorite things! (broke into chorus) haha
ihategirls13 2 years ago
Get the MXR or ISP. The Boss and Behringer suck your tone bad like any other boss pedals. The MXR is true bypass and i think the ISP is to. Thats what i would do. also just putting this out there, Behringer and Boss pedals suck. Boss is like the cheapest company in the world just everyone thinks they are amazing. They kill your tone and arent true bypass. If your gonna build a pedalboard save up the extra money and do it right the 1st time. I had boss pedals and i sold them and am buying good 1s
gibsongod15 2 years ago
like MXR, Fulltone, Real Ibanez, and Vox pedals. Those are what everyone should buy. I dont get this Boss thing.
gibsongod15 2 years ago
Boss pedals are NOT the worst pedals in the world. Please stop spouting that nonsense as its not true. If you think that true bypass is the way to a sure fire tone you are horribly mistaken.
I can't really count the amount of people that rely on a boss pedal to add another layer of sound to their tone.
sesstreets 2 years ago 2
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Well lets look at how many people switched from boss. hmm, Joe Satriani for example, uses his vox pedals and some ibanez and Electro harmonix stuff. Zakk Wylde switched to MXR. Jeff Hanneman from slayer uses MXR. the list just goes on. And boss isnt the worst pedal company just like the 2nd to worst infront of Danelectro

No. Trust me.
gibsongod15 2 years ago
No because you don't fully understand what you're talking about. Look at a lot of stage setups for actual touring musicians. Mostly Boss style pedals. Why? Because they're cheap. reliable, readily available and once you're no longer a bedroom boutique warrior they sound about the same as 'expensive' pedals in a live mix.
smoss469 2 years ago 3
No. NOTHING sounds as good as a tubescreamer or a Phase 90. Oh and also if you look at peoples live setups that actually have good tone they either dont use Boss pedals or if they do they are really old boutique ones that actually sounded good. Then boss went to complete shit.
gibsongod15 2 years ago
Nothing sounds like the circuit that you refer to as the "Tube Screamer" and nothing sounds like the
"Phase 90". Brand name has nothing to do with that.
Tone comes from the fingers, effects simply keep things interesting and the amp is for you to be heard louder. The sooner you learn that mr "I dont have any videos of my godly tone on youtube"
sesstreets 2 years ago 2
There is no such thing as TONE in your fingers!!!! The "tone" is skill...If you dont have skill you will sound bad but if you have a lot of skill you still can't make a roland cube sound like a Marshall plexi or a fender frontman sound like a hot rod deville.
Jaredrock1996 2 years ago
How does tone come from your fingers? You cant make your amp sound good if you can play good. you have to have great gear to get a great sound
gibsongod15 2 years ago
You should probably stop worrying about pedals and amps and focus more on the music, because I sense you've forgotten it.
sesstreets 2 years ago
You are SO right mate!
But stil, the search for tone is addictive :p
25jonathan 2 years ago
Test!
ace69er 2 years ago
I think get tone mixed up with technique.
