there was a cruise ship about 15 years ago that caught on fire and to fight the fire, they pumped in water from the ocean, the only problem is they pumped so much water in that they flooded the ship and sank it :(
Titanic hit the iceberg because of a dumb captain who didn't want to slow down and because the ship couldn't corner worth a damn. What's this ships excuse??
@ccolimon 95%of iceburgs is below water line. Ice doesnt reflect radar as well as metal, even high power miltary radar has difficulty. Radar is on the highest part of ship, so radar beam would pass above objects close to the ship. At a distance, if the radar did detect a large iceberg several miles out, if may well have had the detection obcured by the islands that were near by.
@Dookiedolf Some naval ships are equiped with radar that can detect a parascope. Not sure of the availiblity of this technology to civilian ships though.
@PSPtoolboy, I learned many things. For example, it's quite easy to make girls undress if you first show them your "portfolio" of other girls in similar state. I considered fabricating one from obscure art photographs of nude girls...
I had just been to the Titanic museum In Tucson , AZ.
And they give you boarding passes as i f you were on the ship, I was Leila Saks(5th avenue OWNER!)(orriginator) and at the end you saw if you lived or died..I LIVED.
@paintggh, you can't do that without reducing the ship's cargo capacity considerably. Multi-year ice is very hard, and to withstand a collision at high speed the hull would have to be very thick. It's better just to avoid hitting ice.
@jwfis10690 easier to say below freezing rather than 0 degrees celcius and 32 degrees fahrenheit and 273.16 kelvin, not everyone understand if you just say below zero, below what? zero celcius? zero fahrenheit? zero kelvin? there are several measures in common use making below freezing easier to understand for everyone
didnt this happen before? much bigger boat? oh originated in argentina...well, did not have forward looking radar i guess...i dont know what i am talking about...its those voices in my head.... i need to go get a qtip and poke them......
you know what- its half half- the ship hits and ice berg so it's likeTitanic but is nearly on it's side and flipping over so it's also like Poseidon. naww two in one real life movie action thingy!
uhhh. ΔTf = Kf · mB (Change in freezing point) = (cryoscopic constant)*(molality of the solution) Seawater is ~3.5% salt (NaCl) by mass. So that means 35g per 1 kg of water 35g/58.44g/mol = .6moles = 1.2 moles of ions (Na+ and Cl-) ΔTf = (1.858)(1.2) ∆Tf = 2.296ºC 0ºC - 2.296ºC = -2.296ºC = 27.87ºF 28ºF > 27.87ºF Therefore it is possible.
@rufusvonstorm The salt in salt water lowers the freezing temperature by several degrees. Also, the churning of the sea makes the formation of large ice crystals more difficult.
@rufusvonstorm you may be surprised, but 28 degrees is not impossible. If the current is strong enough, the water won't freeze. Just as well, you know how cold it is at the ocean bottom? Pressure plus currents prevent it from being a big ol block of ice. Oceanography is astounding...what awes me in the forces of nature!
@rufusvonstorm Yes, fahrenheit. Salt water can get colder and stay liquid, which is dangerous because you can fall in and your body will freeze (literally).
@tupsumato Arctic and Antarctic waters, some of the few places where one can come in contact with liquid that isn't ice but is just as cold. Pretty neat.
OK, yes i believe u can hit a Iceberg in 1912 and sink, but to hit a iceberg in today's world is pretty hard. With sonar, Navigation, GPS and so on, HOW could this dumbass captain do it???
Yes beacuse navigation was not avalible in 1912 ? and gps is great to detect icebergs ? Most civilian sonars only detect what is right under a vessel... not what is infront of it.
That explorer sunk was a scandal but it had nothing to do with the crew but with errors made during reconstruction at a shipyard. the water tight compartments was not water tight due to the toilet system.

freezing point depression — the more solute you dissolve in a liquid, the lower its freezing point will be.
hence, seawater with its high salt content freezes at a lower temp than freshwater.
that's why they put salt on roads when it's snowy.
i'm a chemistry major, haha.
millimetersofmercury 2 years ago
im sorry but what does this have to do with the video, and i believe the boat is on water, not the road
mortaldemon1 2 years ago
because it's the same principle......salt makes water freeze at a lower temperature, so water could easily be liquid at 28 degrees with enough salt.
