Just got this bike and it is awesome. Suits me as I live in a flat and do not have the space for a normal bike. Gave it a good ol' thrashing an performance was great. Yes it costs more and for the price you good get a much better performance bike but its a pretty good sloution for people with lack of space.
I have been researching this full-size folding mountain bike & others for some time now, and i am very interested in the Montague folding bikes, espescially the Paratroper.
My only complaint is that rear disc brakes are not standard. Can they be easily retrofitted to the existing rear wheel by buying & installing an aftermarket disc brake setup?
Yep. On mine, it came with a stack of manuals for the shifters, quick releases, and of course the disk brake. It includes instructions on installing both the front and rear disc brakes. It's a PROMAX DSK-320, same as they're using on some of the Cannondales, and it's a good brake. Mine seemed rather weak until it was broken in.
My first thought was to get a disk for the rear, too, but after riding it around for a while, it's become less and less of a concern.
Let's be real here, okay. This bike is built for heavy duty and has been proven in use by the military in the field of battle. Ditto for the Abrams main battle tank but that doesn't mean that it's safe to take the Abrams over a cliff. By the way, when US Paratrooper/Special Forces units do a drop with this folding bike, they're not riding it. The bike is folded and strapped tight.
That depends on the performance. This is a sturdy mountain bike that folds. The folding technology puts similarly priced full size folding bikes to shame...
For those looking for a full size bike that will fit in their car trunk so they don't have to shlep it up onto a roof rack, that don't want to scratch their paint because the bike was bouncing on their trunk mounted rack or that want the ride of a full size bike in a package that folds compactly, it's ideal.
This bike was designed for the military to use in combat conditions. That means it's made to fold and unfold quickly but has safeguards built in to prevent the bike from folding accidentally. The bike cannot fold simply by opening the frame's quick release. After the release is opened, the cyclist must push down on the release and swing the frame sideways. Rigorous testing by the DOD (Dept of Defense) proved this design safe.
What's your definition of a real mountain biker? I ride Montague's products off pavement every chance I get. I've been off road with them in North Carolina, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Louisiana. I've road over slick rock and down fire trails - and have never experienced a problem.
The pedals can only be folded by pushing them in towards the crank and then folding the pedal up or down. I've ridden with folding pedals on streets and serious single track and the pedals have never folded accidentally.
Nice Bike, but in my honest opinion I think you guys want way too much money for it. I could get a way better bike from Specialized, Trek, Giant Etc., and the features of that bike (at least for me) would definately outweigh the advantage of having a foldable bike.
Due to the specialized folding mechanisms and additional labor needed to build a folding bike, they do tend to cost more than a non-folding bike with similar components. On the other hand, if you place a non-folding bike on the rack of your car and the car gets scratched, it will probably cost more to have the scratch repaired by a body shop. With a folding bike, this will never happen because the bike is tucked away & safe in your car trunk.
Unlike common quick releases, this one has a unique safety feature that will not allow the wheel to come loose if the release is open. Even for cyclists that are used to quick releases, this is a handy feature.
Absolutely. The smallest is the A-Bike; it has tiny wheels and packs down to the size of about a skateboard (so there are some use ability issues but the A-Bike is good for last mile type urban rides on smooth pavement). I was sold by the "optional kick stand"...

I also have found the standard brake configuration on the SwissBike LX to work wonderfully.

hey this is cool!
but 1 question,.does the folding thing doesn't affect the chaintensions and the cables aswell?
because i was so concern about the braking systems and the drivetrain. thanks. (Ron Dubai)

Folding has no effect on the brakes or drive train.

Sry.. But just doesnt seem safe at all. Maybe as a means of transportaion but not something that I would want to jump of any sort of a cliff/jump.

Like jumping off a cliff is safe at all... NOT.

Actually, Montague sells it for more AND they add a shipping fee.
