I assume that you think it was because he said: "I had a dream about my wife, she was dead.. but it was all right.." ? He means that even tough his wife and his baby girls is dead and will never come back, he still has Mona in his life.

@Usul573 oh yes it can. There were 3 stages of the game. And the harder versions could be opened only after the easier ones.

This ending is in the LAST version of the game. And to see the real ending you need to finish ALL the game.

It could be the alternative only if the hardest version would be opened from the very beginning.

PS: if there is no happy ending why Max was alive after he was shut with Desert Eagle from 1 meter!!! ...and he is still alive :)

I hope the third max payne gives Mona a living status instead of a dead one. Like they are married and he has been called away on an assingment. I love this ending. Max deserves this much at least. The problem is that I don't feel that this is the right ending and I hope I'm wrong. You find yourself feeling the guy emotionally and you feel sorry for him. Max Payne 3 better have a happy ending.

By the way whatever makes you think Max thought he shouldn't have taken revenge? The line "she was dead but it was alright" just means that he got his revenge and that's why he can move on satisfied. He got his revenge and now his dead wifes memory doesn't haunt him anymore.

I forget exactly why it struck me that way, something about how he realized he just needed to let her go, and he did (hence the but it was alright part). I don't think it was pointing towards "it was alright" because he had killed a whole bunch of people responsible for her death, I think it was because he had finally let go.

But the alternate ending gives you something of a happy ending, and it's just nice to have.

I guess they tried to satisfy everyone.

The only thing is, multiple endings get people fired up A LOT. When there's a sequel that also gets complicated.

I have no clue how Max Payne 3 will relate to the earlier games. It's been delayed A LOT too sadly.

One minor note, Max Payne 2 is so short I get the feeling people played through it a few times, but the alternate ending is kind of obscure.

Well, the sentence ain't cryptic but your interpretation of it is wrong. Max never got over the death of family death after killing Horne in the first game, in fact, it made him feel worse, because now he'd no longer had anything to do about it. Searching for his killer in one made him focused while in 2, he just lives day by day, and his life is absolutely miserable. At the end of 2, he was finally able to accept her wife's death because of Mona. Which is why it was "alright".
