just listen to the music and it tells you what the music really are. not the tempo or the rhythm or what so ever. but every note of it make the whole song touch your inner part of yer self.
@medicgirl88 emotion is not meant to be a big part of the piece. Yes, it's beautiful. But too much emotion is bad - this guy, I hear little emotion. I just hear notes being bashed at points, and a weird tempo.
@Passionofawriter Let me part on some wisdom. If you are used to a certain tempo and are then exposed to a player who has a differing tempo to the normal, it's up to you to change the way you see the timing in your brain to actually hear the this interpretation properly, in fact as a direct result of this you'll feel the emotion too. When you do end up doing that, you'll see that this is full of beauty.
@sizduman yes, but you realize that debussy's intentions for this piece are not the interpretation that is being displayed - 'moonlight' is what it's called. Debussy didn't intend for the piece to be played at such tempo, and though the interpretation is creative it's not in correlation with Debussy's view himself.
@sizduman I disagree. What if he waited five minutes between the notes? Should I just adjust to see the beauty of the tempo then as well? There are different tempos to music, yes, I agree, musicians, composers and conductors clearly interpret music in their own way. However, in my view, if there is too long a gap between chords, changes and notes, the mind loses the grasp of the melody and the tune. It loses its effect. This is what is happening here I believe
@shemseven I completely agree with you. This work is a suite and this movement is a dance. Considering that, I think the space between the chords (and sometimes phrases) are too static. It might just be the recording environment as well. BUT, I think this interpretation would have been fantastic if he could make those silences move to the next sounds. I know it's possible, because my piano lecturer keeps on harping about it. ;)
I am doing this song for an audition for a university and enjoyed watching this to prepare myself for what was ahead in the process for learning this piece. Thank you
Nice version. Leaving the minor mistakes and schizophrenic tempo aside, your touch could be a little better distributed, sometimes the melody is lost. Maybe try using the mute pedal more. Also maybe have another look at the music at the end cuz it doesn't end the way you played it. Good effort though!
@laurag333 Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I was just offering some positive criticism. If I can offer a little more, there's no such thing as interpretation tempo. This piece can be played slow, moderate or fast the whole way through but you cannot repeatedly change the tempo. It cheapens the effect of rubato. And to play Debussy correctly you need effective use of rubato.
It was around 2008 maybe June or what that I've heard Clair De Lune from this man FOR THE FIRST TIME and not from Twilight. Thank you sir for sharing your video.
beautifully done, really catches the intentional pause between every breath.
but just little suggestion that can play around the tempo in-between "sentences", slow in-increase speed, and fade out.... hope you can understand what I meant, I felt emotionally a bit flat.
When I was a 3 or 4-year-old girl,my sister bought me a music box which played this tune.I hadn't known its name until I was 10.Since then,I began to love Debussy's music.Everytime I listened to this beautiful melody,I think of my lovely childhood:)
I totally agree with making this your own tempo and feel, doesn't matter about those little diversions, improvisation and composing are as good as anything

I actually really liked how you played it slower than most people play it. Thats how I usually play it, and I feel like you can hear all the beautiful chords and sounds a lot better without rushing through it. Thanks :)
great job but i feel that its a little 2 loud.... it mite just b ur microphone, but especially in the "calmato" section ur left hand over powers your fight and it should b softer... other than that great representation and it looks like your really having fun with it :)
You need a new recording microphone, ASAP. Up until 2:15, I thought it was beautiful. After that, it was amazing. Thank you for taking the time to record this awesome piece of artwork for the rest of us.

Seriously you don't know what you are talking about. This is the finest pianist on YouTube with a vast catalogue. Imagine if he wasn't filming in his front room on a cheap camcorder. Yet his timing and interpretation is impeccable. Find any other Clair de Lune that comes close. Ditto all his work. His fingerwork makes me want to die with jealously. Nature has made a mistake giving you ears but nothing to hear with. I only write because what you see as mechanical is the genius of this
@pangaea999 this guy is very good. You might also like this video of clair de lune by vika. She's one of the best on here, seriously. watch?v=njsS01GWu-c
@pangaea999 He's OK, but the piece is played a little too unevenly tempo-wise (though I've heard much worse). And...oops...forgot he was at the end of the piece and almost went back to the middle before correcting. An easy enough mistake, but why not record again and put it on correctly (and fix the incorrect notes in the first arpeggio in the middle section)
omg everyone needs to give it up with twilight, whoooo cares if it was in a movie??! it doesn't change that this is an amazing song and that this guy played it beautifully :)
this is beautiful, u are verry talented. i did cover of clair de lune, not as good as your, but if some ppl could just kinda chek it out, id be thankful
the "middle" part of the song (ie from 2:16 to 3:16) sounds deliberate - mechanical almost. if i may be even more harsh, you do know you have posted a video on youtube for everyone to see your playing a piece with several erroneous notes?
@llethaface11 I mean, its fair to say that if it was him botching it as a joke or something; however, it is quite clear that this pianist has put A LOT of effort into this piece. This effort deserves to be praised on by the youtube community, not criticized by pretentious (it's youtube, not a college application essay. Words like erroneous really aren't required.) youtubers. Give the guy credit for working so hard on the piece. He's not a professional pianist.... and you're not a critic.
Absolutely gorgeous! This is my favorite piece of music on the planet and have loved it since I was a child. You did an amazing job interpreting its sublime beauty!
@marvelfett2 The first time I hear claire de lune was when I watch 7 years in tibet. ^.^ It was the music from the music box, just a different version of it.
@ger111 there is no form of media known to man that can ruin a true work of art, if twilight is all people can associate with this piece its their own fault, don't let it ruin the song in your thoughts and depiction of the song
@violentred8149 you couldn't possibly be more wrong. with your flawed logic, you are absolutely ok if this song was remixed to a rap album by 50 cent. "as long as people can hear it" right? the way songs are used can greatly affect its impact to the listener. right now, this masterpiece is sadly refered to as "that song from twilight"
@ger111 Be sure my friend that a random movie (=because Twilight is one) cannot ruin a piece like this. After all, just think : after a few years who will remember Twilight? Bergamasque is a piece of music history, not garbage. So, don't worry :)
@ger111 Twilight didn't ruin anything, it just introduced so many more people to a beautiful work of art. Instead of focusing on Twilight, listen to the beautiful work of art.
@tamararice I agree that it didn't ruin the piece but some people are upset because they found this piece just for the sake of beauty while there are others who found it watching Twilight and the only reason they like the piece is because of Twilight.
Beautiful piece and beautiful playing :)

Its a shame that Twilight ruined this masterpiece.

@ger111 there is no form of media known to man that can ruin a true work of art, if twilight is all people can associate with this piece its their own fault, don't let it ruin the song in your thoughts and depiction of the song

@xalexander no, i am not bothered at all by twilight. couldn't give a damn about it.

course not! doofus

@ger111 Why should it matter where or how someone hears this piece? As long as they hear it that's all that should matter.

@ger111 I don't like twilight, but I still like this song.

@tamararice Thank you! I'm so sick of this "Twilight sucks" crap. Just shutup and enjoy the song. Sheesh.
iluvlost09 1 year ago
@tamararice I agree that it didn't ruin the piece but some people are upset because they found this piece just for the sake of beauty while there are others who found it watching Twilight and the only reason they like the piece is because of Twilight.
