If it had not been the car wreck that changed Jan Berry's life, who knows what type of writer he might have been. With his genius he might have been just as good or not better then Brian Wilson. Jan was a funny person to talk with. I had the pleasure of joking and talking with him a couple of times; he was a great guy and loved his fans. ......... Jan Berry, your true fans we will remember you always!!! You and Dean made us smile and today make us think of our youth.
In reference to "J&D being historicall irrelevant" - you are wrong. Dick Dale is the King of Surf Instrumental- thats a given. Jan & Dean were producing hits before the Beach Boys. Both Jan & Dean and Beach Boys gave us visions of the California Dream and Surfing. Also Brian Wilson gives credit to Jan Berry for showing him the techniques of mixing music and multiple tracking. Jan perfected multi-tracking with layers of instruments and singers. Long live Jan and Dean - surfs up!
@weswade Jan and Dean were great, but they weren't the architect of surf music. Dick Dale and the Deltones were. From there, The Beach Boys added lyrics and brought the surf sound to the nation.
@weswade I like Jan & Dean but they are historically irrelevant, neither original not definitive. Dick Dale being the original and Brian Wilson being the definitive.
@yakjedi How can Jan And Dean be "historically irrelevant" or not :"original"? If anyone is copying anyone then it is the Beach Boys who were copying Jan And Dean's sound.By the time the Beach Boys released their first single "Surfin' " in 1961 Jan and Dean had released 15 singles and had a number one US single. Now unless Brian Wilson had a time machine...............

this version is from the silver summer Album, its a great album better then jan and dean story,so well done dean on producing an undated jan and dean lp,
@surferjay1 Actually, on "The Beach Boys Party" version which was released as a single and charted at No. 2, Dean shares lead vocials with Brian Wilson. Jan wasn't on the record.
