You are absolutely right about this. Therefore I made a video response. I don't know the reason it didn't show up, maybe I need approval. Here is the link, just in case:

Ok, so he knows the moves, but his stances are really bad in some parts. His Kiba-Dachi stances are poor. The feet are supposed to parallel to each other, not pointing at a 45 degree angle. His front stances are to far apart. In theory they are supposed to be shoulder-width apart. You never be able to have "perfect" technique, but that is what practice is trying to accomplish. Having been in Washin-Ryu Karate, under Master Hidy Ochiai, for 22 years, I can say that practice is key.
Try to do it again after few years of really really really hard training. Your jumps in 45 degrees make you look ridiculous. You're not ready for this amount of speed. In fact, you're not ready for this kata.
I think this is a great performance. Shotokan means much more than just a perfect technic. Behind this performance, there is so much strength! And I also think, that this guy really knows what all of these moves stand for!
Nussecke... you should stop encouraging him with this kind of comments. If this is, in your opinion "a great performance" then you will confuse him.
However you said it right, Shotokan means more than just a perfect techic, but that "more" comes with a perfect technic.
And by the way... it really doesn't matter if he only understands what all the moves stand for. Any 5 kyu is able to understand their application. The point is also how the bloody moves are done!
A perfect technic doesn't help you on the street, that technic has to be done for effectivness not for good looking. Of course all the katas which are shown on competitions are impressive to look at, but you cannot say that a 5 kyu really understands the kata. Thats just not right!
I didn't say a 5 kyu understands the kata! Read again carefully. I said a 5 kyu understands what the moves are for! It's exactly what you said about him. This is totally different of "understanding a kata".
And THAT is not effectiveness! The impressive look in the competition is given by the strength AND speed together.
It's sad that you think that karate is for helping you on the street. You have absolutely wrong ideas about this fact. But you're 18 so you have time to change your mind.
I've been doing karate in competitions for at least ten years, both kata and kumite. And I know, that there is more than just the technic side. That's all!
I hate it when people bring others ages into an argument. Ages have nothing to do with knowledge experience intelligence or even character, to be perfectly honest the only think it has to do with is whos more likely to die first.
Yeah right... ages have nothing to do with experience... please think again. You are perhaps naturally born wise. We talk here about the experience accumulated through hard training. If this is all you've got from my replies, then you have a very selective reading attitude.
It is great the he knows the bunkai for this kata, however, bunkai is also predicated on the proper execution of the movements. If the technique is flawed, then bunkai is flawed. If bunkai is flawed, then you really don't have an applicable knowledge of the kata. The reality is, if you practice a kata wrong, then it virtually renders all of its meaning null-and-void. The movements are all done a certain way for its application, but if it's wrong, then the meaning is lost.
Stances are too high, Yoko Geri's not fully extended, too much movement of the hands after the Osae Uke, Empi Waza should be under the opponents armpit, all techquiques are too high, the Mawashi Uke's have too much movement in the circular delivery (movement too big).
I would certainly NOT follow this video if I was learning Nijushiho.
your shiko dachi is too high for Shotokan, it makes you jump up like a spring in two moves at 45' angles. if you watch Okinawan version of Seiunchin it gives you some good idea about using hip in shiko dachi.
OMG man you have to do alot of work on kata. No stands, no hips working, no technic, no power, no dynamic and no transition! I'm an international shotokan-fudokan judge, please listen to me.
terrible, a very bad example
