My parents who lived thru the 50s, 60s and 70s back in China said this is one of the most realistic depiction of what it was like back in the days.....creating the metals, cultural revolution, 3 years of famine....if you wondered what China was like back then, this is a great film to watch.
The novel is ten times sadder.. Erxi died from an accident followed by Jiazhen's death. Kugen also died from over eating beans. Fugui was the only one lived and he bought an old ox to make him company and he named the ox after himself "fugui". It's a real tearjerker. How much courage does a person need to carry on living without a shred of hope?
@openlydrown I think that the American film industry does know how to portray tragedy. The US has not had as tragic a history in recent times, however, and is more prone to optimism (recent economic developments and political partisanship aside).
This film banned in Mainland, people should be able to choose what movie they want to watch. I used to admire the thought of "revolution" communism appealed to me. i read as much books on this ideology. Today, I don't and will not agree w/Communism. I believe in a revolution of love, the revolution of oneself, in our hearts. p.s. China has a rich culture and this is not intended to offend people, I just don't agree w/the political system. ~Peace~
Yimou Zhang had made so much compromises to make the film "softer" than the original novel, in order not to get banned. In the original novel, which is completely a tragedy, Fugui ends up losing all his family members. Jiazhen died during the famine. Chunsheng died on the working site. Yongqing accidentally got drained up all the blood when he was force to donate blood to a official's wife. Fugui's grandchild died of eating too much beans.
perhaps this is Zhang Yimou's greatest work yet...
alot of people read this film as "a charge against the CCP", (exact words my grandfather said after watching the film), perhaps that is the reason why it was banned for almost two decades in China, but i think the film is more about people's lives, their fate in the face of irreversible circumstances, espcially the lives of Chinese people, in the a period of turmoil, struggle and hardship, from 1940s to 1970s
very touching story... it is amazing how life is portrayed by zhang yimou during the communist era.. my life is changed thx to this movie, i will now look at my life in whole new perspective...
wow i commend Zhang Yimou for this another fantastic movie...illuminating life in china..as a communist society...I guess Zhang was trying to throw a question on what communism will going to be...and where communism is going to?
It's interesting: In an earlier scene, when the same quotation about chicken turning into oxen was said, the oxen "turned into communism, and life will get better and better". But now, after all they're gone through, they realize that the system is no cure-all, and instead of communism, Little Bun will grow up, riding trains and planes, and life will go better and better.
Truly great move. The Chinese know how to portray the experience of human existence (in a way that Americans do not). Yes, very painful to be a human being.
Also terrific in portraying the interaction between the political domain and everyday life--how one impacts upon the other; how people cannot escape the fantasies and ideologies of "great men" who impose their ideas and ideals on the common man (and woman).
communism was considered so new and great by those that followed it, and it makes me laugh when good old fashioned capitalist supports, give a ""damn fU(ing communists) its a funny kind of fearful hate, but then again who does not think NK is unreasonable? lol
this had a scene that made me stand back for a moment similarly to farewell my concubine, however it was at the end of the movie this time not the beginning. The scene of the red army taking the base had a heroic theme. however the nurses displaying ignorance, and the idiotic accident with youqing, seems enough to ban the movie. It pisses off actors and actresses maybe, but its all about a clean image. communism is scrutinized anyway. lol 美好音乐也是不是.
That Woman has lived a hard life. I feel so bad for these people living in communist china. Communist bastards thought that they could just take away every intelligent and artistic member of the population because they were "not needed" Mao Zedong was a complete idiot. She had a hemorrhage and any doctor wouldve known what to do. Fucking communist bastards.
you have to look at the situations, not just bashing other countries u noe nothing about. that time Japan was invading china, most land lords worked for the japanese, making the rest of the chinese suffer. if it wasnt for the communist, there wouldn't be a China we c today.. u noe, where most of ur clothes and things are made from.
Communism has nothing to do with China being Around to day. The reason China wasn't separated into colonies and given to different european countries like in Africa was all because of America. The only reason China is around today as it is is because we signed the Open Door Policy to keep it that way. It has nothing to do with the communists that almost starved the whole country and killed millions upon millions of innocent people with their stupid plans.
Honestly one of the best movies ever.

An incredibly powerful movie. Zhang Yi Mou is the most brilliant director in the world.
My heart cries out when I think of what the people of China endured in the 20th Century.

Amazing amazing movie in every respect!
To live... for one's family, not for a promoted ideology. What a perfect ending too - depicting the family's disillusion of that Maoist ideology.

It seems they have changed the story somewhat from the book. And in the book also Jianzhen, Wan Erxi and
Little Bun dies so it is even more tragic. Only Fugui is left and actually he is the storyteller in the book.

did the characters ever define an answere as to why, 'to live.' i guess they would say, for family.
i saw this in when it came out in the theater, varisty theater in honolulu. zhang yimou sees life in technicolor!
