  • she's freaking amazing!!!!!

  • Lets keep in mind that Eden is 9 yrs older than Diana Degarmo.. So when Diana was doing this at 19, only a little over 2 yrs out of her AI run..Eden was a sharp 28...Prime in her career as a Singer and Broadway Actress...

Its kind of like Kristin Chenoweth stepping in for Bernadette Peters.. Sure both are highly qualified to do the role but are they comparable.. NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST...

  • She just belted a G. No big deal.

  • Being Eden's uncle and biggest fan, I must tell you that she was hand-selected by the producers of this show while it was still in pre-production back in 2003. They discovered her in LA and stated that the search was over, they had found "their Brooklyn". She originated the role and performed it with the grace, integrity, dedication, and strong work ethic she has always possessed. Her musical theater career spans over 17 years now. Diana's career is still fresh! Wish her much success, however.

  • @Roland121364 Now, that is just not fair: Rubbing such a fact in people's faces. I hope you realize that you are one of the luckiest people in the world ;) I just traveled across the Atlantic to see Rent off-Broadway and Wicked on Broadway, and that is the closest I'll ever come to such wickedly (bad choice of words?) awesome people such as Eden.

  • Dear YouTube, we have an issue here. You have mistakenly put a "dislike" button on this video.

  • wow u r frickin amazing

  • @daisydog13 The bottom line is.. Diana Degarmo is a Human Brand that has been in the Public Eye since she was 16. Therefore, she cannot chance going for notes her voice may not allow her to go, EVERY NIGHT.. That half step allows her to gradually reach the A-flat.. Which sounds much fuller and Sounds more polished...

  • by half a step cutecurlytop...she still hits an A flat with ease.

  • love the ending when she threw her head back like that, that was awesome! :D

  • duuuuude she can do that so easily!!! ugh, so jeleous! Im not trying to be mean, but does belting come easily for people who arent, well you know, petite? Diana is cute though...im just wondering...

  • I don't blame the singers for the screaming nature of this song. I blame the songwriters. No woman should have to sing a G# like that, ever. It will literally shorten her career.

  • Holy Belting!

  • I need to see this girl painted green.......NOW! ;-)

  • @IsabelleHayley AMEN!!

  • I am a professional opera singer. You dunce.

  • She's not screaming!!!!! Shes belting. It's great!!! Some of the stupid people piss me off and some of you are seem really stupid because of the bad grammar you use. Shes great and a lot of you are retarded.

  • edens is better

  • to the people down below. This is definitely NOT yelling at all. It's singing, from her gut. Just because its not all that new pop stuff we hear today, it must mean its yelling right? NO. Just because she can actually SING. Its called BELTING not yelling. Learn your facts, before you go bashing real talent.

  • When she belted the last notes, I was strangely reminded of Patti Labelle.

  • This is better than any of her American Idol performance.

  • "Belting" ? What vocal category is this? Like I said, its yelling any way you look at it.

  • @MrApollo45 you are an idiot and know nothing of singing technique if you think this is yelling - it's perfect

  • This is much healthier than Eden's. She was SMART to have the key lowered because it sounds a lot better. Eden is a screamer. She has literally no vocal technique. She over does everything by screaming it out and pushing herself past her limits. No doubt, she's amazingly talented, but her voice isn't going to last for long. Diana has all of those notes and it sounds brilliant.

  • @MSUFreemanFive Very true. All you have to do is look up any video of Eden's last run as Elphaba in Wicked SF and your statement about her voice not lasting will be proven true, and it's quite sad, because she does have amazing talent, but did too much with it, I guess

  • i met her 7 years ago today :)

  • this is in an obviously lower key

  • @DavidDSR01 Its a full step lower....

  • @DavidDSR01 nope. its the originalllll!

  • @DavidDSR01 this is definitely not a lower key.

  • @Stingoscar1987 actually it is a half step lower (i just asked my roommate who has perfect pitch) Still this is a SUPER impressive performance

  • she is goo but i like edens more because it is in the actually key

  • woooo lawdy something about this made me wanna scream for jayzus!!! shewwwww didn't Diana had all this in her???!!!

  • DAYUM ON THAT LAST NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is in a much lower key han Eden sang it in!!! Just saying!!! Theyre both amazing but Eden went for the higher key and pwned it! LOL Love Diana's version tho!

  • @mibm07 Actually, it's only a half step lower.

  • i definitely like her version better then eden!!!!!! edens versio sounds a little bit strained in some parts

  • woah... i thought Eden was the only person in the world that could belt that last note

  • Check out her version of Streetsinger, SOO AMAZING!

  • fuck she can sing.

    so jealous!

  • sing girl!!!!!

  • I have grown to love Diana's voice. However, Eden's will always be better to me. Anyone saying that she has to much vibrato or whatever are being ridiculous since vibrato comes naturally with good technique. There is a world of difference between belting an F# and a G. Both are very difficult though. I am sure she could sing this in the original key.

  • SING HONEY!!!!!!!

  • beautiful voice and great interpretation of that song!!!

  • Can someone tell me why this woman did not win American Idol?? She's awesome!!

  • @LizSmiles1 Actually a lot of the votes weren't counted that year cause of a glitch or some dumb shit like that. I agree with you she can sing 1000 times better than Fantasia, she should've won.

  • I really like this version compared to others. I feel like there's more soul behind the vocals sans all the musical theatre techniques to the point where most singers that sing this sound somewhat similar - I mean the over-used vibrato effect. Diana's version brings the song to a different musical genre in my opinion

  • Comment removed

  • I kinda prefer this to Eden's. Her vocal is smoother, and the lower key makes those high notes not as shrill.

  • I perfer Eden, but hey, I'm biased! I do love Diana, though.

I remember being so mad when Fantasia won American Idol. Well, look at her now compared to Diana.

  • there are such good things about diana's and eden's versions. here, she sounds so effortless, it's so smooth and perfect and just amazing. but eden strikes me as more of a powerhouse because sure, she's reaching but it adds a lot to it i think. gaaah both are so fantastic :)

  • she's amazing.

  • oh myyyyy <33 this is amazing

  • And I like how she doesn't have to mix her voice a ton.

  • This is absolutely MIND-BLOWING. I have always loved Diana, and I don't like comparing her to Eden, but if I had to I would probably say I like her version better.

  • too many glottal onsets, sorry.

  • @pinkstar12 Opinion. Sorry.

  • Eden is much, much better i'm afraid. Diana's in her belt 20 seconds into the song. Ruined in my opinion. End.

  • @pinkstar12 and eden's in her throat (and nose) for the last minute so i don't see how she's any better

  • Loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee <3 soo much more cleaner than edens :) amazing

  • i think i'm in loveeeee <3

  • Can we see her in green makeup at the Gershwin sometime soon, please?

  • @sandleaf1 omg she would be perfect for elphaba!! i just seen diana in hair 2 weeks ago she has pipes! and is sooo nice i talked to her at the stage door so maybe after hair she will journey to oz

  • @NobodyInAllofOZ1 YES! YES! YES!!!!!

  • Does anyone know the context of this song in the show?

  • This girl was born to be on stage.

  • i shivered the WHOLE way through this. the tone to her voice is simply goregous.

  • Comment removed

  • How old was she here?

  • Comment removed

  • Diana is actually 18 in this video but she turned 19 a few weeks later.

  • she's in Hair now, right? i'm seeing it in April.

  • yep, as Sheila

  • i met her when i was....11 maybe, and she was 18!! she was SO spuer niceee!!! she has an AMAZINGG voicee!!

  • Who cares if the key is lowered? Would you rather her sing it in a higher key and damage her voice?

Opening night for Hair tomorrow... New Sheila! New tribe... Starshine!

  • All these high note fanatics reeeallly wear me out. I love belting, don't get me wrong, but when we're dismissing an entire performance as "unimpressive" because the top note is a G instead of a G#, things are getting a lil out of hand. You all realize that there are more aspects to music than what the top note is, right? Who knows why it's in a different key? Who cares? Honestly, if a woman can hit a G as comfortably as Diana did here, chances are a G# does not require that much more effort.

  • I remember meeting her in Philidelphia @ the Boscov's Parade for Thanksgiving! She was So sweet/ Awesome singer.Love Her!!

  • She's going to be in Hair

  • I can't believe she didn't win American Idol! I cried when she lost to Fantasia lol.

  • @DancingFan28

lmao its not like u'd get a percentage of the proceeds lol

  • Eden's version is fantastic, but this one actually gave me chills... serious chills. Wow!

  • true for all these, but u should hear eden sing defy gravity

  • I think Diana has a much fuller tone than Eden. I had never seen Eden sing it until I saw the comments here reference her performance. I watched it and she is without a doubt impressive. Diana just has so much back bone to her voice. She has soul you can't fake. It just seemed as though Eden was reaching a little. Both are obviously amazingly talented though.

  • Yeah I agree. Edens voice is kinda light like whipped cream lol

  • @TBon3Supl3x This guy is right. It's easier for Diana to hit because it is a half step lower than Eden's version. It's easier to belt a G (Diana) than a G# (Eden).

  • @kalkr8z Agree. Both of them are amazing! However, Eden sings a full step higher, which makes a lot of difference. I'm kind of glad that they lower the key since it sounds amazing too but less demanding for the singer. :)

  • @sunnyyichen Actually, this is half a step lower. Diana did sing it in the original key too, but yeah, they're both great.

  • @DianaDFan Yes!! Sorry, this really is only half-step lower. I didn't listen to it carefully enough. It's really interesting since Diana sings in the original key in other videos but not in this one. Do you know if they adjust during the tour? And I actually love this lowered version. I think Diana sounds more comfortable in this one. ^^

  • @sunnyyichen They adjusted the key to this one later in the tour.

  • @kalkr8z

It's because Eden's key is much higher. She has a higher range than diana. It's that good kinda reach you know? Like not painful. Just sounds like there is effort being made while effortless. I personally enjoy that combination

  • @kalkr8z This is not singing. Its yelling.

  • @MrApollo45 its not yelling at all. her belt is extremely healthy. she's been trained, and has complete control. if she were yelling, she wouldnt be able to do it 8 shows a week.

  • @kalkr8z Bearing in mind that this is lower than the key Eden sings it in so its much easier to get a fuller tone.

  • @benjiboi91 ...by half a step...she still hits an A flat, i don't see how that would suddenly allow for someone's tone to become miraculously fuller

  • @daisydog13 Actually in the sheet music (original key) the top note is an A-flat, by taking it down half a step it makes i a G. Which is still impressive. But if you were a singer you'd know how much of a difference even a semitone can make to a high belt.

  • @kalkr8z i agree. they lowered the key for this version, so its much less of a reach. diana rocks it.

  • @sydneyparra96 they lowered the key literally one half step, thats basically nothing and she is still belting a G. Also, he belting at the end sounds much more healthily done than Eden's.

  • her voice has such a beautiful tone

  • I love eden, and i love diana too (thought she shoulda won idol) and as impressive as it is to hear eden hit those notes at the end of her version, this one is much more pleasant to listen too. it just sounds a bit more pure. Yes, it is a much lower key, but i still like it better.

  • love this version how ever i really (L) edens last note shame they brought this down great performance however stilll love edens more

  • God, I just love this. Eden does it great too, but I really love this one just a tiny bit more. I got the chance to see Diana do it in Dallas, and I was just blown away. Incredible.

  • I would love to see her as Nessa in the film version of Wicked... she would ROCK

  • this girl is so much more powerfully vocally then eden!! wow

  • Comment removed

  • i don't think diana's version is vocally inferior but eden's performance brought tears to my eyes. her version is so heartfelt and honest and i don't think that diana is at the same level acting wise.

  • i just really like the song in this lower key. im a fan of diana's but i don't think she's truly extraordinary in this performance. I wish Eden would do it in this lower key - the higher one is just too much to sing or to hear.

  • I agree. Even though its slightly lower its much more pleasant to listen to.

  • This is a beautiful version. Very different from Eden, and yet still powerful. I would love to see Diana do more broadway. She certainly carries it off here.

  • this is definitely in a lower key than eden's version. I'm not good at determining those kind of things just from listening, but I can hit these notes with diana's version and not even close with eden's.

  • Only half a step lower, actually

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, I believe it does. This is a difficult song to sing in either key! I think both Eden and Diana deserve kudos since I'm sure they can sing in both keys equally well.

  • This is sick. i dont care what anyone says.

  • I like how just being a step lower automatically makes this one inferior. It's less shrill this way.

  • I agree. Eden had to really strain to hit those notes sometimes and it wasn't her fault... the song was just too high. I hate that every composer feels the need to cause vocal damage to his or her actors these days.

  • That song was tailored to Eden's voice. That's just her style. I am personally not that huge of a fan of diana's brooklyn but I adored her as penny in hairspray...

  • it doesn't make the song inferior, its just more impressive when someone can hit those amazing notes that eden hits. and i saw this show a lot, and ive gotta say that eden really can hit those notes without straining (although it does sound like shes straining on this video).

  • yeah if you listen to one of eden espinosa's recordings its def. higher, probably cause she couldn't hit the last note in the regular key.

  • Diana can definitely sing this in the higher key, it was just more comfortable half a step lower and easier for the sound systems since each theatre differed.

  • they changed it to a lower key for her...so def not better than eden....

  • Is it really a lower key? I couldn't tell from this recording, but I was wondering if they changed it for her.

  • For most of the tour, Diana sang it in this more comfortable key, but she started the tour in the regular key.

  • She killed Eden on that. Sorry. lol.

  • Sorry No Comparison to Eden Espinosa I saw it Live with her she is amazing Kudos to Diana But no Idoll here compared to Eden!

  • Oh my ATLANTA!!!! This chick packs a punch!!!

  • my god this girl is one hell of a good singer :)

  • well damn.

  • I would LOVE to see her play "Elphaba" in the movie "Wicked"!! I didn't think she could do it....but she is becoming much more mature now. She is wonderful!

  • WTF, another stella performance.... S*it girl, amasing!

  • i like that she's different ! acting is all about how you interpret the role and i think diana and eden are both awesome ! :)

  • She is stellar! man...

  • wait ......she is AMAZING!! i think she is better than eden but thats just me

  • i agreee :) she has no strain at alll

  • The Key is Lower for Diana however this works to her advantage because her voice sounds 5 million times softer than Eden in this song..

  • her acting is atrocious, but her voice is absolutely incredible.

  • I agree.

  • Why does everyone have to complare performances? You either like them or you don't, don't bring Eden into this. If every Brooklyn was like Eden it would get boring. Variety is key.

  • I mean, it's only a half step lower... it's still awesome.

  • ye it is in a lower key but its still pretty impressive because she acts like she owns the song. but edna still come out on top

  • Who is Edna? lol You mean Eden?

  • LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL edna.

  • danelle...I am a musician...and Diana's key is lower. Sorry.

  • I think both Diana and Eden are amazing,

but I think this song calls for a lighter voice and higher key. And I don't think Diana's version does that.

  • I hope all this people saying Eden is not good have at least seen a clip of Wicked or RENT, because if not, they're simply a bunch of big mouths. Diana is good, yes, but Eden's just got talent! I seriously doubt Diana could make an Elphaba as powerful and amazing as Eden does.

  • umm...this key is not different than the key that Eden sings the song in. OBVIOUSLY not a musician.

  • yes it is it's like a key lower.

  • Diana, girl how the HELL did you lose American Idol? Shows how ridiculously stupid people are!

  • Diana is incredible! She is the best Penny ever! :) She has a great voice! :D

  • eden is pure AMAZING!

  • I've always thought that just because you can hit a note, doesn't mean you should. So when I heard Eden do this song on the recording, I wasn't impressed. It just wasn't pleasant.

But DAMN! Diana, this song was written for you! That last note was pristine!

  • Yeah....okay, cause that makes sense.

  • First of all - Eden is amazing. and the recording sounds fantastic!

Second - Diana is singing this in a lower key.

Not to say Diana isn't amazing too, but Eden is fantastic and can sing her brains out.

  • Diana powns. Eden is okay. DIANA IS AMAZING I LOVE YOU DIANA

  • haha it's kinda funny I was just at a camp with Diana and Eden and Diana actually sang this! Eden didn't seem to care because she sang Defying Gravity haha

  • Yeah, I don't know why people keep comparing them either...they're both great and friends.

  • wow... i never liked diana... until right damn now lol

  • Eden is good.

    But Diana owns this songs.

no one can argue with a voice that good.

  • Are you saying they can't sing? I'll agree that Archuletta didn't have the greatest stage presense...but both of them have knock out voices.

I'd even be willing to accept you not liking Archuletta, but this girl has some pipes. Period! This is one of the hardest songs in musical theatre to sing!

  • its good but edan brings the passion she brings the technique!

  • I personally like Diana's version MUCH better that Eden's! I actually didn't really like Eden that much. But Diana's got a beautiful voice and this is a beautiful song i love it! :)

  • she sounds great!...it was smart of them to lower the key for her... :)

  • omg this is amazing

  • AMAZING.......i thought better than eden

  • Definitely BETTER than Eden! Diana has a beautiful voice!

  • friggin' effortless.

  • amazing.
