I was working at RDU at the time when this plane came in. A company in another country I'm not sure where, was renting a generator from GE. The Antonov was the only plane big enough to transport it.
One of these landed right over my head in Bahrain when I was in the USAF. You honestly can't appreciate how big it is until you see one right over your head. You could immediately tell that its bigger than a C5.
dude i was there that day that plane is loud as hell!!! i go out there like every other day bu i see nothng like that before only 777 from london wich is awesome
Now let's enlighten you all on some history: The Russians built this BEAST just because they can and have not found any other use than transporting really heavy stuff overseas. It would make a great passenger plane, but it would cost a lot f money to modernise and equip with all the safety and life support systems like complete cabin pressurisation(not just the cockpit)
Cool, We got to go through it during the Namao Airshow (CYED before it was closed). The Soviet Union fell during that time and they had no money for fuel, the Edmonton Ukrainian community donated money and filled the beastly 6 holer with goods for its return flight, it stayed for more than a week until then.
I've got some great close up photo's of it taxiing (pictures taken behind the gate you see in the video). If you want to see them, just let me know in a PM or something. :)
I am glad you were able to get some good footage of this. I skipped out of work early on friday to watch some plane come in and to my amazement I saw this one sitting at the cargo apron. Much better coverage than wral.
Thank you, knball. I had a tripod with me and planned to set it up, but the plane arrived quite a bit earlier than we expected and I had no time - as you can see I scrambled enough just to capture something. I did watch the newcasts on ABC and NBC and did not think their coverage was very good, either. :)
I actually came back that evening with my fiance to watch it depart. Do you have any idea why they needed to fly it rather than ship it via oceanliner? An once last question, how did you know it was coming in? I try to stay up to date with big airport events, but this one slipped by.
I do not know why they chose to air freight it versus cargo ship. Perhaps something to do with time and cost tradeoffs. I may be able to find out - I'll post the answer if I can get it.
I found out about it at about 11pm the night before on WRAL's website. Saw the article posted on there and decided to see if we could make it. Got lucky to see it with so little notice.
I think if a century ago you could demonstrate that this thing can fly then you'd get horribly killed medieval-style.

is that plane the one who delivers the shutle?
pAtTs024 2 years ago
@pAtTs024
no, the one that carries the US shuttle is a modified 747, however, this "little" jet was built to carry the russian Buran shuttle

the A380 doesnt even compare!
6V92TA 4 years ago 3
Its wingspan is 8 metres longer than A380. So it's not a huge difference. But it's the biggest plane ever built.
styhl66 4 years ago
Not bigger in terms of wingspan compared to the Howard Hughs H4
