All my adult life I've served in the movement for democracy and social justice. I voted for a republic in the Australian referendum ten years ago. I'm a leftist through and through. Lately, I've come to believe that, for all its faults, monarchy can be, in the modern age, a force for good. Elections aren't everything and certainly don't guarantee good, qualified leaders. Or would it keep it's parliamentary system with an elected figurehead president a la Ireland or a combined head of state and government president elected via parliament a la South Africa?
My preference would be for something similar to the Irish system. I would also like to see an elected second chamber. I would like the first chamber to continue to be elected on the "first-past-the-post" basis and the second chamber through proportional represntation. One can but dream.

She can sack a PM and declare war, but never would. Bless the old trout, she and the late Lady Di the Saint Woman were very popular in England, though they rarely got on.

I was at a charity dinner once and had the good fortune to meet Her Royal Highness, The Queen. She was a lovely lady, but spoilt the experience when she let off an almighty fart. All my adult life I've served in the movement for democracy and social justice. I voted for a republic in the Australian referendum ten years ago. I'm a leftist through and through. Lately, I've come to believe that, for all its faults, monarchy can be, in the modern age, a force for good. Elections aren't everything and certainly don't guarantee good, qualified leaders. Reform the monarchy by all means but there is a lot to be said for a stable moral centre above business and partisanship.

I don't see how the monarchy sucks in anyway. Last time I checked The Queen was still queen of 16 countries and they include some of the most progressive, modern, and liberal countries in the world that would be considered icons of 21st century such as the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and many more. These countries unlike the US have made corporal punishment aka the death penalty illegal and also legally recognize same sex marriage. Can't really say the same for The US.

You're wong. Many of us do not want a monarchy. It isn't a personal issue. I respect the Queen. She has dedicated herself to the service of the country and works hard. However, I, and many like me, disagree with the institution of the monarchy. It is out-dated, has no place in a democratic country and legitimises privilege which still pervades British society. How can you justify the hereditary principle? The head of state should be elected. Appointments hould be on merit - not birthright.

Or would it keep it's parliamentary system with an elected figurehead president a la Ireland or a combined head of state and government president elected via parliament a la South Africa?

My preference would be for something similar to the Irish system. I would also like to see an elected second chamber. I would like the first chamber to continue to be elected on the "first-past-the-post" basis and the second chamber through proportional represntation. One can but dream.
