  • I like it this fast, really. It shows her state of panic, of agitation. Not all up tempo music is happy music.

The original seens to be not sung anymore. I have a score published in 1859, and that still says Pia Mater in stead of Et tremebat, but we sing Et tremebat. And the Scholl/Bonney recording does so as well, and Bowman/Kirkby. I dont know why they took out the Pia Mater.

Tuffy, so great I found these video's! It makes practicing even more fun! Especially since I changed fach to alto.

  • It's too fast. Vai com calma aí!

  • Adoro Pergolesi, assolutamente. D'accordo, l'esecuzione è un po' atipica, rispetto "ai soliti noti", ma questa voce è puramente settecentesca, interpreta nel profondo i sentimenti dell'autore.

    "Dieci più", cum laude!

  • i think the tempo is quite adequat.....i made it even faster and it was thrilling....

its not that lovely comfortable music as it seems to be in a slower tempo....

the the text is about being anxious and trembling because of that...all is about cruxification....

and who knows lamentos, as they even in our days still sung, has the courage to go to the limit of expression in that aria....

  • The reason for the tempo is very simple: Pergolesi himself decided that this movement should be Allegro. The autograph manuscript is quite clear on this point. I might add that the comments below about Jaroussky's sexual preferences are gratuitously irrelevant to the quality of his performance: grow up!

  • Why is he singing so very fast?

  • For God's sake. It seems he is ridding on a horseback, galloping desperatly over a mountain, about to release his mother from the gallows.

How come!! All the the gracefulness of this song is lost here.

  • Hi jflaviovidal! I read your comments and completely agree with you. I feel exactly the same. It might be not polite of me to say but this version made me laugh. Comparing it with Andreas Schollz 's one, this one is simply ridiculous.

  • @jflaviovidal

that was exactly the feeling I got while listening to this... ridding on a horseback. This song is so beautiful if it is sung slower...

  • OK, after comparing several versions , this is what I have found out> David Daniels' tempo is almost exactly that of Jaroussky> Michael Chance's version qualified as "jaunty" . Scholls is more paced. WHY Pergolesi did not specify andante, lacrimoso, or others adjectives I do not know. Philippe's light and flexible mezzo is in no way inadequate, but if you do not care for the tempo, de gustibus....Do listen to Daniels though! Anyone said "jaunty"?

  • The tempo is absolutely ridiculous !!

  • Today every conductor wants to be 'original, renewing' and so on, but they often forget WHAT they are singing. It's the mother of jesus who is trembling as she's seeing her son at the cross. This tempo is like she is enjoying it and dancing with the roman soldiers around the cross. Jipieeee! In other words, this is awful!

  • @nosajeken Ditto. I couldn't agree more. It's just repulsive to think of the Virgin Mary dancing and singing with the Roman soldiers around the cross.

  • How is that relevant?

  • are you dorky?

he is a man I dont know if he is gay or not, I am Countertenor and I'm Heterosexual, but this dont have relevance, the important is the voice, bravo Jaroussky!! he is a very good countertenor (not the best), but I think the Tempo is very quickly, and I dont like this, I prefeer the version of the great James Bowman, in my opinion the best Stabat Mater, but this is not bad, good voice, horrible tempo, thanks

  • @manwatching42

probably, he is good looking and talented! But he might as well be an exceptional hetero. :-)

  • @manwatching42 : yup, his partner is John-Christoph Spinozi (I think) leader of one of the baroque orchestras he has recorded with.

  • @manwatching42 YES he is.

  • @manwatching42 Excuse me, I do not want to be rude, but in the culture and fine arts, the sexual orientation is irrelevant.

  • Well...the tempo may be too fast for some, but ....chicken? His voice has no avian sound whatsoever. However, opinions are nothing but...opinions.

  • Who cares about tempo, he sounds like a chicken.

  • Philippe is an angel in any respect!

  • I like his voice and appreciate the post! But the tempo is ridiculous. Like it's about a fox hunt or something.

  • I´m with you, lo voice is amazing, but too fast, I can´t imagine a mother crying her son

  • Don´t like his sound at all. Don´t like the tempi. Don´t like...

  • thanks maria

    what a surprise

    thanks for posting this masterpiece
