@StalwartArab Actually that is exactly what I fault Burke for, his unwillingness to spend money on top UFA talent, MLSE's one competitive advantage are their deep pockets yet Burke has been too boyscout to offer competitive contracts for guys like Gaborik, Kovaluchuk or B. Richards. At the same time he's willing to trade away quality 1st rounds picks. He's makes it next to impossible to land top talent and we waste all our caproom on jobber defensemen.

Has their been a better UFA with a 6.7 cap hit in post lockout history? Maybe if Burke wasn't locked in old NHL thinking he could have forgiving Kovalchuk for both not being a defense or American and spent some of money on him. Kessel, Kovalchuk on the 4 on 4 would have cured all overtime woes but we have Mike Komisarek instead. I don't think Leaf Nation gets to judge Lou for signing Kovalchuk.

+/- is a misleading stat, and Kovalchuk's +/- gets made to look worse than it actually is because, a) he's been getting a ton of ice time on a bad team for his whole career, and b) most of his offense comes on the power-play. His defensive play has actually improved, although some of his old bad habits have sneaked back in lately with turnovers and lazy backchecking. I still like the $6.7M cap hit for him. He'll still get 40 goals, he's had to deal with injuries so far this season.

Yay...slumpbusters. Though you could say that positively since Kessel was in a bit of a goal scoring (not points) slump, so yay there.

Surprised you didn't bring out the good old "it's back to back games" reasoning for why they lost. Though that first period was pretty sad so no excuses all around. Good they got 3 of 4 points, but need to keep winning after losing all 4 points in those Boston games. It's just so tight that the wins have to keep coming.
