He did a bad flare, made the plane run ahead from the touchdown point, making it a rather dangerous landing than what it was supposed to be under these weather conditions. I think he was too high, came down too quick and got a little speed before flaring.
Notice that he plane drops quickly before the touchdown. If the plane was a little higher than that, you could have damaged the plane and injuried some people.
For many of the most modern aircraft, they can autoland if they have to (and if the airport has the proper runway category)... but for something in conditions like this, the pilots are definitely in full control.
In my opinion the flare was too long. The pilot should land the plane exactly at the 1000 feet point in these weather conditions. The additional approach speed should be bleed off over the threshold allowing the plane to touch exactly at that point. Flaring with gusty winds near the ground is dangerous.
@flyingdino68 and you would know, because youve done it before? that shit isnt easy to do. and when he flared at the end, that was wind shear pushing him down. that pilot is amazing to keep control of the plane with that much wind shear.

i've always wondered that in strong xwinds landings do they keep the localizers centred or do they fly to the side of it to compensate for the effect of xwind. do they drift from the localizer in xwind landings
@1982FMJ Airliners fly crosswind approaches using the crab method, so they fly at an angle facing into the wind so that the aircraft tracks the final approach course (straight in, no localizer offsets) and then just prior to touchdown they will kick the nose of the aircraft straight (or straighter) down the runway to prevent excess sideload damaging the gear.
isnt there another method also where they yaw the nose straight all the way towards the runway and use alieron to counter the effects of yawing. In the technique you described they have to counter act they kicking/yawing the nose straight withopposite alieron. they get out of the crab and into the banks so they touch down first on the upwind wheel. it must be tricky in super strong xwinds as the nose will be facing away from the runway at 1 or 2 oclock in strong wind test flights
@1982FMJ Yes there is another method called the wing low method which involves flying banked and yawed for the approach and then landing on the upwind gear. However this is impractical to airliners as it involves an extended period of sideslip which is uncomfortable to the passengers and landing banked is to be avoided in airliners due to the possibilty of an engine strike and the last minute corrective measures for a level touchdown are greater then that for the crab method.
@1982FMJ Also, the crab method if executed properly does not result in a banked landing, as the correction is made just prior touchdown, leaving the wing no time to accelerate and bank, yet the pilot still anticipates any bank and is ready to apply opposite aileron if required. The pilot doesnt have to correct fully so that the nose is travelling directly down the runway, they only have to minimise the angle to subsequently reduce the sideload on the gear, then align fully after touchdown.
@scaremenga what i say was that "the wing flex was nice and that is scary to imagine a 787 landing on that kind of conditions "a little typo mistake on the "too
",also thanks for the heads up Mr. smart a** airliners wings are flexible because no flexibility can cause the hole structure to collapse due to the high stress (learn that on school) and if the wing flex looks the same on your video you need to upgrade your pc for something more HD or get some glasses.
@felp23 Am I supposed to know your intentions? You put "to", not "too", and in this case both versions of that word were acceptable, so I assumed that's what you meant to say. The only reason I gave you tidbit at the end was because I thought you didn't know wing flex was a natural phenomenon, implied by your comment, not my thoughts. Before you call someone a smartass why don't you consider why they corrected you. Because it sure as hell was not my fault that you spelt "to" wrong.
@felp23@felp23 Obviously I know why the wing flexes, I told you that it's meant to.
Just so that I can't call you a smartass by assuming what I meant by wingflex, here's what I meant to say: "The 777's wing is relaively flat in comparison to the 787's wing before lift is added, the flex on the wings seems to be the same." Meaning, the wings get the same amount of flex, but one looks more flexed (the 787) because of it's stationary wing strucuture. Got it??
That must be one of the worst landings I have seen for a long time... much too long flare, misjudgment of height, over-control... should probably have made a go-around... and yes, I fly the 777.
Jackass, the only thing you fly is a paper kite--perhaps an A380 too on MS flight sim. You probably stayed in a HolidayInn Express last night too. Anyhoo, flying into Narita can be a biotch. Winds that day were almost 30kts on a direct cross, with gusts. And a gust or two clearly ballooned this aircraft. Wasn't pretty, but there was no "over control" and "misjudgment of height". BTW, what is "misjudgment of height"? Was that something SAS taught you in the sim--ha ha.
agreed.....landed long and the normal landing runway at Narita is only 7 or 8,000 feet long (been awhile since I've been there). Fortunately the 777 stops on a dime.
????!!!!! i have had like 35 kts gust 60 xwind about 27 -30 kts stright cross and i dont jerk the controls like this i wonder why he is over controling it .... i think aiming for smooth landing welll any landing you can walk away from is a good one loooool
Does Narita usually have like... strong winds around the airport? A lot of the videos I've watched seem like the landings are a little bit wobbly, but all very perfect. I landed in Tokyo about a week ago and it was the shakiest landing I've ever had... just wondering if it has something to do with the terrain? Lots of wind there usually?
@trancebeliever i was wondering also do you use less flaps when its windy cause i would think more flaps would cause you to get thrown around by wind more so you would use less flaps and come in faster
@zzddytt true, but you can't compare the 777 and the md-11. The Md-11 has an active system that corrects the pilots inputs to try and compensate for the md-11s small elevator and apparently, it is very annoying and the pilot has to fight it every second in some situations. The 777 has fly by wire, but it doesn't have a control augmentation feature.
MD-11 was extremely pitch sensitive, while the 777 is roll sensitive. During a gusty landing (crosswind or not) the sensitive pitch could be a handful on the MD-11
I've flown on JA717A before from SFO-NRT. Having been on that actual plane before...I must say being in it during that particular landing must have been really interesting!
