I am frustrated that I just got the N97 Mini and one thing I found that is missing is the ability to paste properly. While trying to paste a very lengthy WEP Encryption code into a WLAN i noticed it didn't give me the option to paste anywhere. While looking online I have noticed other users that had the same problem. Quite Annoying. I had the N95 8Gig for a couple of years and was so used to the 'pencil' button that allowed for easy copy and paste really anywhere there was a text field... :(
after a thousand comparisons amongst quality, specs, stability, platform between HTC Touch pro2 and Nokia N97, finally I have ordered Nokia N97 yesterday with the influences by my wife as she cant imagine any other platform than Symbian+Nokia combination...8-)
Oh, if Samsung put the same support behind the Omnia HD that Nokia or Apple put behind their products, they'd have an out and out winner. Sadly, Samsung's 'customers' tend to be the networks who, generally, are fairly clueless.
I have just sold my BB Bold and now waiting for E72 released as I want 5 megapixle camera with very good CMOS censor and yeah of course 3.5mm headset jack...
good choice on number 1 phone, the only problem is that the n97 mini only has i think 8 or 16 gb mem,so a big difference from the original, i htink people who r used to htc or black berrys would rather have the classic.but the yonger market would like the mini better, its like the n95 and n95 8gb or the n93 and the n93i again. i think people get exited about the new disign but it wont be as populer, cause the price of the classic would go down. that swhat i think tho
I have a problem with my n97. Since i upgraded it to v2 its more buggy than ever. I had to do a hard reset twice in 2 days(because when i wanted to start them, i would get the white background and "NOKIA"). And i never had to do a hard reset before
Hmm..... you've got something that's upsetting it then. Mine's been rock solid. Try backing up and then wiping the mass memory as well, then you should see that the virgin installation is fine?
I really didn't think the N97/mini would come out on top, though now I can decide what phone will finally replace my E90 (which has surprisingly started to come apart, a sign perhaps).
I have an N97 as well and I think it's worth mentioning that it works with Rhapsody-to-go here in the US. And with a Mobbler app to do live scrobbling and tons of storage space, it's what I've wanted in a phone for a long time. Killer app for me.
Btw. I think the E52 might also deserve a place amongst the top phones. I say this because not everyone needs a qwerty keyboard, a touch screen, a fancy camera or big screen. The E52 is unbelievably discrete and has just enough features for the light user. Plus it has the best build quality that I can find right now and a monstrous battery life. For its target market surely it is the best choice. Its definitely the best phone for me!
well I agree thats a suprising first place. I wonders where is Omnia HD "word on the street is" that it is the best symbian v5 device on the market so far :)
Word on *which street* exactly? The Omnia HD is impressive hardware, but its firmware continues to remain something of a hacker sport. Think WinMo and XDA Developers. Not exactly something I should be recommending to the mainstream.
I guess the N97 redeemed it's self, the first reviews were terrible, not sure if we can get the N97 mini in the states yet. Only other Nokia phone I am interested in is the N86, but I do agree it looks old fashioned.
Waiting for the HTC HD2, the new Sense UI looks amazing.
I wouldn't bother, Sense UI is overrated. Great for a compulsive fiddler, but after using it for a day or two, I wanted to go back to vanilla/simpler Android UI.
Isn't it the same? I like simple, elegant OS and UIs. Not complicated layered interfaces with a bazillion ways of doing the same thing. And yes, I know that every current system has some compromises here....
hi steve, as usual, your reviews have a personal touch and humor which makes your reviews worth watching compared to those abstract and impersonal video reviews that are in abundance on youtube. Regarding N97 mini, is RAM memory separate from internal memory? I cant see to find any good article on learning more about RAM and internal memory. You got any?
Yes, RAM is 'dynamic RAM' and is a separate chip. The N97 and N97 mini now have enough free RAM for almost all use cases, with their new PR2.0 (e.g. v20) firmware
Have *you* checked the N97 recently? iPhone-like kinetic scrolling in all pages and lists and dialogs. PLUS all the hardware benefits. Hence my no. 1 choice.
what competent phone doesnt have kinetic scrolling?
and hardware? the n97's lastgen processor and pathetic amounts of RAM (not enough to run heavy applications without crashing randomly) speak for itself.
its a straight port form 3rd to 5th
N97 hangs, freezes, and behaves oddly all the time. pages load element at a time, and screens load HELLA SLOW
lol, i know your up to date, i was kidding. but the n97
fully deserves the vast /near-universal criticism it garnered.
Very Genuine and UNBIASED selection of Top 5 Smartphones...perfect choice for N97 mini as Top1 as it deserve it in comparison to any other smartphone exists in the world 8-)
This video was a lot of fun and I applaud your courage at commending the N97 in such a... er... well humorous manner. I have been considering the N 97 mini, but I am waiting to see how the N900 compares to it. Can't wait to see your review. Thanks for a stellar show.
Hmm, I think the Sony Ericsson Rachel will be the Android in your top 6. And teh Nokia N97 mini!!! Really!! I've yet to look at one, won't beat my iPhone though, but it does have a decent camera and are you going to review the Satio at all?
Nah, played with one for much of Mon/Tuesday. Very disappointing as a day to day phone and parts are very unfinished. And hardware's not that hot. Great prototyping device for the Maemo world to really make progress though.

joshuaner 2 years ago
Well N97 mini is good if you can sacrifice the size of the screen and the size of the internal memory,
Well its really hard to find single handed truly functional device-------------------------------------------
joshuaner 2 years ago
i got the n97 since i saw the thing back almost a year now wanted it
its very good, but 1 thing, sometimes going from thing to thing is a bit slow
say u wanna txt someone. u press their pic, click msg, choose number (they got more than 1) etc
and this takes about 2-3 seconds
its a long time, once u know where stuff is, it shud take no more than a second

Hmm...... have you got a lot of contacts? And what firmware version is your N97 on?
stevelitchfield 2 years ago
Steve ya a champion mate!
But how and in what world is the Samsung HD not included and the iPhone is? Where does the iPhone compare to the Samsung HD... where?
It's like Top Gear having a top 5 and not including a ferrari and whacking a V W in there cause lots of people bought one.
Ya still a legend tho.

My choice would be either the Nokia E72 or the Samsung Omnia HD.
You've got no idea how hard it's been trying to pick between the two or find something similar with better specs.
themanwhoknew 2 years ago
Both good devices in their own way. Though the N97 mini manages to combine the best of both?

stevelitchfield - I'm not an N series fan. They always make them into bricks.

YESSSS!!! N97 rules!!!! Unfortunately I still don't have one :-( But great choice Steve!!

I bought the 5800 NAM but I simply don't like it. After 7 months of use, it's time for an HTC Touch Pro 2.
Great keyboard and bigger, better screen!

Let me see... is this Symbian vs Maemo ?? :)
jamesavilalfa 2 years ago
Errmmmm... why? There isn't really a production Maemo 5 in existence yet. And the upcoming N900 is only really a platform prototype....

Eh? Totally different devices aimed at different markets. N900 will sell 200,000 before Christmas. N97/N97 mini will sell 2,000,000.

well im sorry ,but people have been doing that allready
i think id go for the n900
lets see if its better etc..

I think the N900 is in different category aimed at different demographics. If anything the N900 should be compared more to archos or viliv tablets.

out flat, and then you have to bend the screen up manually - there's a metal hinge 8-)
