I've written a song dedicated to Professor Brian Cox. You can find it on my channel or search "song for professor brian cox" and find my name Jules Mann. If you're free please check it out and leave a comment.
"...yes, absolutely... why else would we be doing this? ...we have been just so god damn BORED, so we thought to ourselves... hey, lets make a doomsday machine!!"
Poor Brian must be sick to death of the whole "black whole will destroy the earth" nonsense. He must get it every time he meets someone new and every time the media calls for a story. I'll bet he's so sick of it that some days he wishes the LHC could create a black hole that would destroy the Earth just so he didn't have to put up with being asked the same bloody question over and over and over ad nauseum.
No, if it does anything, it'll just create a magnificently microscopic black hole that will evaporate or fizzle away almost as immediately as it came into existence. Thank you Hawking for that piece of wisdom.
You need to ask yourself "where are the peer reviewed papers?" and "what is this persons motivation". Instead of blindly believing and regurgitating whatever makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.
Honestly you 'secret' fruit cakes are as bad as 2012ers.
Black holes are simply objects which have collapsed in upon their own gravity (due to being very dense). They can be objects immensely large AND... small.
They could not create a large dangerous one in the LHC because they would need an object much larger than the earth to do so.
What they hope to create (in addition to initial conditions) is at best is tiny...micro... black holes which will last a second or so before gaining too much mass.
Brian Cox seems like a pretty cool guy. Seen a couple of hour long specials he's hosted 'What on Earth is Wrong with Gravity?' and 'What time is it?' so you know, I like totally know him personally. =P
I obviously missed that Top Gear episode. Everytime I see the name Brian Cox on that list I wonder if it is the "real" Brian Cox, or just that "other" Brian Cox (and "dismally bad" just isn't a negative enough description).
Now I know which it is, thanks. Looks like we need to start a petition to get him on there, I bet he'd get a good time.
Oh Noooooooooooooo, we're all doomed!!!!!!! Run for your li- Oh, wait, he said yes. That's okay then.
I did love his opening talk, but I do have to say that as a jet-lagged traveller arriving at 8 in the morning, opening the talk with a heavy dose of theoretical physics might have been a LITTLE much for my bleary, sleep deprived brain. But if anyone could pull it off, Brian Cox could :)
I guess you can't blame the uneducated for assuming the worst. Plus, it sells papers.

I don't think it's funny. Creating a black hole on PURPOSE that will eat the Earth is serious. A lot of people might die.
