It was around 38 pounds in total. I'm working on a tutorial video which shows you how to make these yourself (controlled by the parallel port), but it's taking longer than expected... =/
What is 38 pounds in US dollars? We're having a little financial crisis going on here so maybe when you reply the pounds to dollars scale will need to be updated...
Sorry, I would normally have converted - I forgot.
At this minute, 38 GBP = 56.24 USD.
I recommend using XE (YouTube's blocking any hint of URLs in comments now, so please just do a Google search for it) (XE updates its conversion tables every minute or so).
Oh wow. $56.00? You used your money efficiently. Strobe lights are about $10.00 at the cheapest and they can go up to the hundreds so I would say you have pretty good money management.
Well, they're LED-based lights, but yes, I found a person on eBay who sells new ones for very little (4 GBP, 5.90 USD). Some places wanted 8 GBP (11.80 USD) for one... =/
Actually, if you freeze the video at the right moments, you can see my camcorder itself sees a similar thing many times - when (usually the blue or green, because they're brightest) lights are at full brightness, it sometimes gets too bright for the camcorder's CCD to recognise and so the centre of the bulb actually looks black with only a halo of light around it. Kinda makes me worry about damaging the poor thing. =/
This is incredible, if you ever host a rave, let me know, I'm totlly going. With this kind of light fixings and Touhou music, it'll be a damn great party XD
Possibly, but I hoped that "StepMania Lights" and "Seizure Mode" would have been enough hints (especially after seeing my previous video about these lights before they were in a box).
Okay, the program is now released. I'm still working on a guide to building the actual lights and using the program, but I think the program's fairly easy to start to use as long as you know about step charts in StepMania.
Please check the video description for a link, people. ;D
Works great mate, cheers. Only had to download a few extra .ocx files and it fired right up. Will now just wait for your paraller tutorial or order a SSC-32. :)
Thanks for letting me know, and I'm glad you got it to work. The download ZIP now includes the OCX/DLL files and info on what to do with them, but that's made the file size shoot up to 1.61 MB. -_-'
Well, I have a camcorder and I have a PSP camera. But here, I was only using my camcorder. I just shot them separately and synced them on my comp together.
Notice how the top-left view misses the first flash - I explain why in the video description. ;)
Normal high quality link in the videos (&fmt=6) is FLV and mono audio, &fmt=18 is h.264 and AAC stereo audio in an .MP4 container. &fmt=6 has a higher video bitrate compared to &fmt=18 though (512kbps vs. 900kbps) so you might want to try that IF the sound quality doesn't matter at all for the video at hand, I only think silent videos are fit for this. It's too bad youtube doesn't let us choose fmt=18 automatically from the settings though, I always find it the better option.
Well, the lights aren't controlled by StepMania in this video - they're controlled by a program I made. My program has each light assigned to a different arrow, whereas StepMania just flashes all lights at once for any of the arrows (which I find a bit annoying). Also, my program controls them via the serial port with a microcontroller, and StepMania controls them via the parallel port directly.
You're not the first person to want to know how I've done it - I'll make a tutorial video soon. ;D
If I was outside the house, I would've thought your computer exploded and lights were going nuts on the monitor. Was the music audible outside the house too? Then you could see the sync. xD
Heh, well, I just aligned the first flash in each of the views with each other, then aligned the music with that. Then I remembered that YouTube messes up video/audio sync so I looked at a previous video of the lights I uploaded and moved the audio in this new video in the opposite direction by the same amount to try to counter-act it.

Sorry about that - my server is kind of unreliable.
I tested it just now and it wouldn't even load for me (on the same LAN =p). I've restarted it and it appears to be up and running again.

Nice. Now put this on while playing Touhou and you'll end up in the hospital with paralysis/seizure/coma. JK
How much did it (everything included) cost?
I bet your local DJ will gladly buy it from you (no wait, it's priceless!)
Try getting a patent for this. lol
(Also, I would hate to be your neighbor)

And did you actually blast that music at night, or did you just put the song over the video? And if you did blast it, what did the neighbors say ?

Well, a tutorial video will be on the way from me soon.
No, I didn't blast the music through anything other than my headphones - the lights were doing all the blasting. ;)

Type &fmt=18 at the end of the url and see it in full screen...Enjoy 8)
But that's cool, now i can't see anything...xD
lol the video from outside xD
x2500000 3 years ago
Well, that just lets you watch it at 480x360 resolution and at a higher bitrate. It's not the full original 800x600 resolution though.
There's also a "watch in high quality" link which does the same. ;P
SomethingUnreal 3 years ago
No, When you click in the link with watch in high quality it's like &fmt=6, but &fmt=18 is better...:P
x2500000 3 years ago
Oh wow, I didn't know that. =D
When they first introduced the high quality thing, I swear it just added &fmt=18... =/
