haha dont make me laugh!! dumont was the first to creat a plane that take off with his own means (14 bis) a plane that you could control (nº19 demoiselle) HAIL BRAZIL!!!!
If the "catapult" faction would care to check their facts, the Wrights first flights did not use a catapult. The plane took off ENTIRELY under its own power from a trolley. ( Read American history before you make ignorant comments ) ? kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk, make me laugh! I'm Brazilian! Know dumont and the wright brothers, but who are you?
This is such a big lie. A glider is not an airplane. It is as much of a plane as a balloon is; it flies but it is not a plane. Santos Dumont's plane was an actual plane, with an actual motor that allowed the plane to takeoff by itself.
Planes are catapulted from ships to lift off, so what? Once you manage to perform a controlled flight is what matters, and the Wright Bros. did it in 1903 and stablished an amazing 39 minute flight in 1905. Dumont's great contribution to aviation was not the first flight, but the Demoiselle, a plane with many features still used in aviation today.
It was for fun! She had a class assignment to learn about an inventor, she was telling her mom & me about her project and we asked if she'd like to try making a video....
@joshfreedman I feel sorry for Emma she has been brainwashed like most americans.
The Replicas of 1903 never flew, NONE, here at your video NOTHING. Take a look at Dumont's Replicas code iAARzqCgBtw. They ALL flew. I know you do not like that. Another thing you will not like is to find out that the Core of engineers who put the man on the moon was the 55 rockets engineers of Hitler, Von Brown and his team. The american media is very powerful and can forge history.
Did Santos Dumont learn a lot from Wrights? I don't think so. The designs of 14-bis and "the Flyer" are very different. However the Wrights learn a lot from Cayley, Lilienthal and Chanute.
FYI -- Emma did the research, collected pictures, wrote the outline, and decided which clips to use. Her mom & I found most of the video footage and I did the actual editing with Emma directing everything I did. As we edited she told me what was important and I helped her focus her script. I knew almost nothing about this topic before she taught me!
I only am responding because it's important for more adults (and kids!) to realize that children can do excellent, high quality work.
@joshfreedman An awe-inspiring presentation from an admirable young lady. What a disgrace that certain individuals chose this forum to demonstrate their total lack of maturity!
You mean, without catapults, ailerons and in front of thousands of eye witnesses and many scientists? Ah, of course the flight was recorded in a movie, right?
No, It was 3 Indonesian students who first invented and flew the airplane in the 1894, but the Dutch colonial in Indonesia burn it down since they did not know what it really was.
I know these 3 students in Indonesian history. I'm an Indonesian and I study history deeply.
And fortunately the wrest of the world does not buy into your belief. But being that you are from a third world country like Indonesia who has a shortage of books, I can see why you think otherwise. Good luck on getting a proper education.
Indonesia is the second world country actually, but the American keep sucking our economy for their economic profit, How ashamed is that.
And The teabag actually invented in Indonesia not in New york, It was invented in Java island where tea field was surronding arround then an American discover it and sell it to a company tea and coffee shop merchant Thomas Sullivan in New York city.
Shotty-You hold youself down, don't blame others for your misfortunes; let alone an entire nation. Indirectly you are blaming me. As far as the 3 students, that is news to most I have mentioned it to, can you quote a source? And how convenient that it was "burned down" by the Dutch Colony to eliminate all records. And who, besides you, really cares about the invention of the teabag, are you seeking some sort of retribution? Having your own "tea Party"?

Even if what you say is True. Its like arguing who invented the calendar first. The Wright Brother still invented flight with out any help so I don't see the big deal.
Assuming what you say is true the knowledge of flight was lost till Wright brother came along.
When the Wright brothers telegraphed home after Kitty Hawk, the only bit of their telegram which was commented on by the local press was "Wright brothers home for Christmas". Why wouldn't the press be carrying "Wright brothers first to fly" banners if they had just made history? The answer is that they hadn't. Everyone knew that powered flight had already been achieved, so the important portion of the communique was that they would be home for Christmas.
The first person to fly a powered, heavier than air vehicle (aeroplane) was Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, (who is more famous for his machine gun). On Tuesday 31st July 1894 at Baldwyn's Park (formerly the site of a mental hospital, now a housing estate) in the London Borough of Bexley, his flyer was launched for the first time and successfully flew.
"14-bis or Oiseau de proie (French for "bird of prey"), was the first to take off, fly, and land without the use of catapults, high winds, launch rails, or other external assistance."
@simoneua The reason those over in America never mention Santos Dumont is because he had absolutely nothing to do with the invention or development of the airplane. According to the Federation Aernautical Internationale (FAI), recorder of all aviation records, "officially" states that the world's first unassisted take-off was Clement Ader (3Oct,1890) FR, world's first unassisted take-off of a sustained/controlled flight was Orville Wright 17Dec, 1903 USA. Dumont's first flight was 13Feb,1909.
@BearFlight MENTIRA FILHO DA PUTA....DUMONT FOI HOMENAGEADO PELA AIAA COMO O PRIMEIRO A DECOLAR EM UM AVIÃO SEM AUXILIO EXTERNO EM 1906. FOI HOMENAGEADO POR SUAS CONTRIBUIÇÕES A AERONAUTICA ESPACIAL. You attempted to do something fun and creative, and I liked it very much! If you did this for a project in school, I'd give you an A!!!! Loved the video you did about Monet too!! That was you, wasn't it, Emma? Thank you for the effort you and your dad made to produce a video fun to watch!
It is foolish to argue with folks who know nothing about the origin of flight. Doubting the achievements and primacy of the Wrights is a demonstration of ignorance. The Wrights flew before 1906 several times without a catapult or ridge lift. Their flights were publicly observed and published. Do you suppose a Tomcat isn't flying just because it is shot off the deck of a carrier? Get a life.
who invented the first plane that left the ground with his own engine was the brazilian Santos Dummont, so who invented the airplane was him, and the whole world saw it.
Josh / Emma: Excellent video - You're both to be commended for your fine work. One point of clarification: The Ken Hyde replica that was featured on Nova is of the 1910 Wright Model B, not the 1903 Flyer. The Model B was the first Wright machine to use a rear elevator, rather than the forward canard of 1903-1909. I only point out that minor error to you because of the overall excellence of your work...
arfracer-That was necessary to get the Flyer off the "junction railroad". I don't think that Orville stalled his flight. Orville writes, "The course of the flight up and down was exceedingly erratic..."
Wilbur actually stalled this way on December 14. Orville didn't stall, his flight was just short. Wilbur in the photograph is watching Orville make his flight & the natural errors one makes when they do something for the first time. Both brothers agreed the front elevator was too sensitive and placed too near the center of gravity. Wilbur on his fourth flight would've made it to Kitty Hawk if not for the over sensitivity of the front elevator. However great video young lady. Congrats on yourwork
deep-That forward elevator was a problem, it was too small and too close, but a major factor was the having the CG and CP balanced the way they did. This type of configuration was very unstable and needed opposite input by the pilot constantly. Later improvements of the 1905 Flyer had the CG well advance of the CP. The CG on the 1903 Flyer was at about 29% of the wing chord, approx the same distance of the CP in level flight.
Orville also told Daniels to snap the photograph when he got the airplane aloft at the end of the track. Remember he's taking off in the face of a 27 mph wind and in such conditions has to keep correcting the elevator.
I feel bad that with all of the dialog back and forth I have not taken the opportunity to compliment the young lady who made this wonderful movie. This is a really well done report and I apologize for not addressing this sooner.
santos dumont created first airplane! wright created cataplane! 100 years of wrigth in state united, after see 100 years(2006) in BRAZIL. what this fly? wrights cataplane? no!!! 14BIS! see about life of dumont!!! good morning!! Italy- fiocco claudio
your all idiots no joke controlled flight and first airplane or ugly box cause thats what dumont had are different than being able to say oh I want to turn this thing "Left". Thas what the wrights did. What good is an airplane if you cant steer it? I am not saying that the Wrights invented the first thing to fly..I am saying that they were the frist to have an airplane that could be completely controlled by its pilots. Hence Controlled flight= Useful airplane. Morons...
Please, just show me what you are saying: where is the Flyer 1903 flying?
The Flyer 1903 is not able to fly even using a catapult, downhill, strong wind or any other help than you can imagine.
The Flyer III (1908) is a perfect airplain and I agree about that. The Wright Brother were genius and made a lot of contribution after 1908, before this year nothing!
The world will have the progress without them. This is the true.
Flyer-I have to post when I read the part in your comment that states:"The world will have the progress without them." We have had a dialog for awhile, but I think that this comment undervalues their contribution. How many years was the Smeaton coefficient inaccurate, about 150 years? The Wright's were one of the first to realize this, to .0033. They had a wind tunnel, who else did? They realized that control was central to solving the flying problem, who else did?
They didn't invent the airplane!!! many people had already made them but they were the ones to have it lift off the ground with their wing flow they invented wing of flight!, get your facts right!
My goodness! Never knew there was SO much energy about this topic. Just a reminder to all - PLEASE KEEP YOUR COMMENTS CHILD-APPROPRIATE - in other words, lighten up on the flames - thanks!
negative it wasnt the wright bros. who invented the airplane. Just like leonardo da vinci who not only was a great painter (mona lisa) he also invented things like the helicopter the bycicle and the submarine.. only after he died were his inventions constructed.. same case as the wright bros. many people were perfecting the airplain at the time so no one really knows who invented ...
budno1-I agree, they didn't invent the "airplane", there were many aviators attempting flight prior to the Wrights. Where the Wrights diverge is in CONTROL and their approach to the flight problem. Here the key thing to remember is what they accomplished on December 17th, they actually flew, from level ground, self powered, manned, fully CONTROLLED, and sustained flight, not once but 4 times. Many people still don't understand what really happened on that day nor their contribution.
he also made a drawing of an ornithopter which is an aircraft with flapping wings but he didnt invent anything he designed something on paper almost like painting a picture he didnt have the design engineer process that led to the wright brothers success.
Not the first motor flight. Karl Jatho's first flight (17.12.1903) took place without help of a natural ridge etc..., around 4 month before Orville Wright were successful. This part of history has to be written new, affords to revise history of aviation are strengthen and soon this facts also have to be recognized in the U.S.
A few reasons, there was not enough wind, the fabric was damp and the engine was not running as good as it should have, it was a horrible day as far as weather was concerned, I was there.
They did a run up early in the afternoon and then put it back in the hanger, the replica did fly, just in test flights. But this a mute point. The replica had to fly on December 17 2003, the original didn't. If the wrights had the weather of 100 years later, they would not have flown on that day.
the questio remains: all were invited to show their machines in Paris, october 1906. Why the Wright brothers did refuse to present their machine ?? many, so many questions to the Wright brothers, so many, so many eywitnesses to Santos Dumont, sorry. The lights of the spotlight of History are clearing everything after 100 years. There`s no place, street, avenue in Paris, the Meca of World aviation to Wright brothers. There are so many to Santos Dumont in France, excuse me.
The Wright Brothers were INVITED by french authorities and refused to show anything, by the excuse of patent interests. In reality they knew that their machine could not take off, like the "2003 replica". Voisin, Blériot, Caudron and other pioneers were present at Bagatelle, October, 23 1906 and ALL eywitnessed the first human flight. For many years the american propaganda machine tried not only to impose the a false reality and tried to erase the name of Santos Dumont of anything written.
Flavio-Here you are again, and the same comment what are you on a mission for no purpose, with your false nationalism. It's been 100 years, Dumont=balloons Wright Brothers=Airplanes
No Dumont had a machine that hopped up a few feet and fell. He did not control the plane on three axis of revolution. YAW, PITCH,ROLL Dumont and bleriot had flying machines that flew straight never once did they ever have any control over their crafts to change direction get your facts straight. There is a differnce between having the first flying machine and being able to be the first person to have CONTROLLED flight. Get it?
I am done explaining to you I am sure being a Mechanical engineer I would know more than you no offense...You probably dont even know what Yaw Pitch and roll is or how its controlled. Demoiselle did not do a 35 mile loop thtas for sure
It is ok. I do not intend to offend you either, but for sure I understand much better than you about Dynamics, Kinematics and Fluid Dynamic. I am PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
Ok I have seen them both fly and the flyer 1903 did a record holding loop in 1904. Le Demoiselle made its depute in 1908. It is quite obvious Dumont added alerions to his plane after the wright brothers sucess to control his machine...correct me if I am wrong but I can give you my citation if necessary. Dumont definately flew first with his boxy looking design howere that simply just hopped off the ground. In 1904 the wrights flew a controled loop about 5 Km.
sorry Santos did NOT fly first. The Wrights did in 1903 and with NO catapult. Langley used a catapult and Wilbur jokingly may have said "...it was the only idea he had that worked." 14Bis was built by Gabriel Voisin who hated the Wright Brothers but copied their canard designs.
That was great, you sound very intelligent and articulate for your age!
This was a great report and I'm sure it took you a long time to get all the information and research the history of Flight! I know it took me a long time just to get all the pictures for my video, "Legacy"
I've posted it as a video response, and hope you get to see it.
Emma, you're a delightful narrator and it was a pleasure to watch your video. You're also more articulate than many who have posted replies here :) Stay curious and aim high!
Sorry Santos-Dumont fans but the 14 bis first flew in 1906. The Wright Flyer I first flew in 1903: Fact. The Flyer II in 1904: Fact. The Flyer III in 1905: Fact.
The Flyer III was the first practical airplane. It could cover 20 miles and stay airborne for 1/2 hour and in 1905: Fact.
The wright brothers used forces outside the plane (like the catapult and height) and santos drumont was the first to fly with only the power of the airplane.
Flight with catapults and from high height were attempted several of times...
Another artificial nationalist pride seeker, belittling the benefits that the Wrights gave modern aviation. The catapult was used when it was needed, as it is today on modern aircraft carriers. The key component of the Wright design was the ability to have full control, not using pilot weight or just the rudder as many aviator where doing. It is interesting how Dumont copied the Wright design just prior to his 1906 14 bis, using a canard with a biplane.
Superb, I'm actually reading a biography of these amazing gentlemen and this was an excellent reminder of what they did and the contribution to the world, it was a great production and superbly narrated! Well done from over the pond in Lancaster, England!
Im not speak english very well, but for the wrights no have and film for the first fligth only in 1.909 and eyewitness .For Dumont the cientific comunit in europe, french and english to is there,is not a cata-flyer,but fly by your owns engine. Please read the book "Wings of the madness"i think write by one american guy.
Interesting, I had never heard of Dumont. Apparently his flight in "14-Bis" was in Oct 1906 -- and the "Dumont first" fans say the Wright's 1903 flight didn't qualify under the French rules... rules perhaps created after the Wright's proved it could be done?
Excuse me! Dumont Was the First Man Flying!!! Catapult isn't Flying! If I Catapult Myself with No Wing Will fly!!!! A brick can fly too.. just catapult-it!
Santos-Dumont was an interesting eccentric who invented nothing. The 1903 Wright Flyer didn't use a catapult. The Wrights made flights without using a catapult. Great job Emma.
This argument is like a hundred years old, and your side lost. Fighter planes get catapulted of aircraft carriers all the time, guess they can't fly either!

Dumont's great contribution to aviation was not the first flight, but the Demoiselle, a plane with many features still used in aviation today.

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology on aviation:
*Why do we love flying?
*Why do we relate flying with our full potentials and with our successes?
*Why do we use the phases "take off" and "fly high" as a kind of adjectives to describe our success of our hard working?
*Why do we used the word "runway" as a expression of optimistic future of a person/ a team?
*Why do we relate aviation with freedom?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!!

Lost Knowledge does no good.
wooka21 3 years ago
When the Wright brothers telegraphed home after Kitty Hawk, the only bit of their telegram which was commented on by the local press was "Wright brothers home for Christmas". Why wouldn't the press be carrying "Wright brothers first to fly" banners if they had just made history? The answer is that they hadn't. Everyone knew that powered flight had already been achieved, so the important portion of the communique was that they would be home for Christmas.
sammiexxx21 3 years ago
The first person to fly a powered, heavier than air vehicle (aeroplane) was Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, (who is more famous for his machine gun). On Tuesday 31st July 1894 at Baldwyn's Park (formerly the site of a mental hospital, now a housing estate) in the London Borough of Bexley, his flyer was launched for the first time and successfully flew.

Get a life.

Notice how the elevator is pointed skyward at .20,that is why Orville stalled the airplane.
The next flight by Wilbur was more stable.
arfracer 3 years ago
arfracer-That was necessary to get the Flyer off the "junction railroad". I don't think that Orville stalled his flight. Orville writes, "The course of the flight up and down was exceedingly erratic..."
warp13 3 years ago
Wilbur actually stalled this way on December 14. Orville didn't stall, his flight was just short. Wilbur in the photograph is watching Orville make his flight & the natural errors one makes when they do something for the first time. Both brothers agreed the front elevator was too sensitive and placed too near the center of gravity. Wilbur on his fourth flight would've made it to Kitty Hawk if not for the over sensitivity of the front elevator. However great video young lady. Congrats on yourwork
deepseadirt 3 years ago
deep-That forward elevator was a problem, it was too small and too close, but a major factor was the having the CG and CP balanced the way they did. This type of configuration was very unstable and needed opposite input by the pilot constantly. Later improvements of the 1905 Flyer had the CG well advance of the CP. The CG on the 1903 Flyer was at about 29% of the wing chord, approx the same distance of the CP in level flight.
warp13 3 years ago
Orville also told Daniels to snap the photograph when he got the airplane aloft at the end of the track. Remember he's taking off in the face of a 27 mph wind and in such conditions has to keep correcting the elevator.

Hence Controlled flight= Useful airplane. Morons...
johnwaynelives 3 years ago
Please, just show me what you are saying: where is the Flyer 1903 flying?
The Flyer 1903 is not able to fly even using a catapult, downhill, strong wind or any other help than you can imagine.
The Flyer III (1908) is a perfect airplain and I agree about that. The Wright Brother were genius and made a lot of contribution after 1908, before this year nothing!
The world will have the progress without them. This is the true.
flyer1lyer 3 years ago
Flyer-I have to post when I read the part in your comment that states:"The world will have the progress without them." We have had a dialog for awhile, but I think that this comment undervalues their contribution. How many years was the Smeaton coefficient inaccurate, about 150 years? The Wright's were one of the first to realize this, to .0033. They had a wind tunnel, who else did? They realized that control was central to solving the flying problem, who else did?
warp13 3 years ago
They didn't invent the airplane!!! many people had already made them but they were the ones to have it lift off the ground with their wing flow they invented wing of flight!, get your facts right!

negative it wasnt the wright bros. who invented the airplane. Just like leonardo da vinci who not only was a great painter (mona lisa) he also invented things like the helicopter the bycicle and the submarine.. only after he died were his inventions constructed.. same case as the wright bros. many people were perfecting the airplain at the time so no one really knows who invented ...
budno1 4 years ago
budno1-I agree, they didn't invent the "airplane", there were many aviators attempting flight prior to the Wrights. Where the Wrights diverge is in CONTROL and their approach to the flight problem. Here the key thing to remember is what they accomplished on December 17th, they actually flew, from level ground, self powered, manned, fully CONTROLLED, and sustained flight, not once but 4 times. Many people still don't understand what really happened on that day nor their contribution.
warp13 4 years ago
Ehhh Wrong! Da vinci did not invent the helicopter he made a drawing of a thing that might have flown. It actully doesnt.
Shazam0 4 years ago
he also made a drawing of an ornithopter which is an aircraft with flapping wings but he didnt invent anything he designed something on paper almost like painting a picture he didnt have the design engineer process that led to the wright brothers success.
johnwaynelives 4 years ago
Not the first motor flight. Karl Jatho's first flight (17.12.1903) took place without help of a natural ridge etc..., around 4 month before Orville Wright were successful. This part of history has to be written new, affords to revise history of aviation are strengthen and soon this facts also have to be recognized in the U.S.

Why did the Wright brothers "replica" did not succeed to take off in 2003 ?????????
FlavioCapimba 4 years ago 2
A few reasons, there was not enough wind, the fabric was damp and the engine was not running as good as it should have, it was a horrible day as far as weather was concerned, I was there.
They did a run up early in the afternoon and then put it back in the hanger, the replica did fly, just in test flights. But this a mute point. The replica had to fly on December 17 2003, the original didn't. If the wrights had the weather of 100 years later, they would not have flown on that day.
warp13 4 years ago
Dear Warp13,
the questio remains: all were invited to show their machines in Paris, october 1906.
FlavioCapimba 4 years ago 2
The Wright Brothers were INVITED by french authorities and refused to show anything, by the excuse of patent interests. In reality they knew that their machine could not take off, like the "2003 replica". Voisin, Blériot, Caudron and other pioneers were present at Bagatelle, October, 23 1906 and ALL eywitnessed the first human flight. For many years the american propaganda machine tried not only to impose the a false reality and tried to erase the name of Santos Dumont of anything written.

he did that on a lot of videos I wrote on one about the wrights success he is missing the point of what their contribution was to MANNED flight
johnwaynelives 4 years ago
The Wright Brother did not bring any contribution to the MANNED flight before 1908. They worked in complete secret.
Before 1908, many pioneers have already developed airplain and flyed a MANNED flight. Santos=Dumont and Bleriot for example.
flyer1lyer 3 years ago
No Dumont had a machine that hopped up a few feet and fell. He did not control the plane on three axis of revolution. YAW, PITCH,ROLL Dumont and bleriot had flying machines that flew straight never once did they ever have any control over their crafts to change direction get your facts straight. There is a differnce between having the first flying machine and being able to be the first person to have CONTROLLED flight. Get it?
johnwaynelives 3 years ago
For sure you never saw the Demoiselle flying. This airplaine is produced until today in France. A Perfect design.
Please, show me the Flyer 1903 flying, just taking off is OK. YAW, PITCH, ROLL for FLYER 1903 is a dream.

I am done explaining to you I am sure being a Mechanical engineer I would know more than you no offense...You probably dont even know what Yaw Pitch and roll is or how its controlled. Demoiselle did not do a 35 mile loop thtas for sure
johnwaynelives 3 years ago
It is ok. I do not intend to offend you either, but for sure I understand much better than you about Dynamics, Kinematics and Fluid Dynamic. I am PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
Please could you answer my questions?
Have you already seen the Demoiselle flying?
Have you already seen the FLYER 1903 flying?
flyer1lyer 3 years ago
Ok I have seen them both fly and the flyer 1903 did a record holding loop in 1904. Le Demoiselle made its depute in 1908. It is quite obvious Dumont added alerions to his plane after the wright brothers sucess to control his machine...correct me if I am wrong but I can give you my citation if necessary. Dumont definately flew first with his boxy looking design howere that simply just hopped off the ground. In 1904 the wrights flew a controled loop about 5 Km.
