  • I've found a 1.8 inch sata hdd (Toshiba 60 gb). Will this be compatable? Not sure whether I need sata or pata? Also, do hdd's typically come formatted/partitioned etc. and if not are they easy to format? Thanks in advance for your help :)

  • what kind of connector is that? I have only used/seen the mini IDE and SATA hard drives, but i don't recognise that. Is it somehow proprietary to the EEEPC?

  • whatis the difference of 900 & 901

  • @MrAlexandros99 main difference was 1.6ghz atom cpu on 901 vs 900 mhz celeron on 900

  • How did you get that ZIF connector there on the motherboard?

  • is CF faster than SSD ?

  • i have an dell mini 9 with an Super-talent 16GB SSD and what hard-drive you recomand

  • yes hello will all ipod harddrive fit asus 901

  • Most 901's dont come with the zif connector. You have to replace the mini pcie sdd in most.

  • Hello jkkmbile.

    very thanks for the video!

i have a little question for you.

is it right that you have to put a 1.8 inch SSD drive in it instead of a HDD

and, why in the other video are you replacing that little green board? i think it''s the SSD, but why are you putting it out, putting a new one in, and then another bigger grey one?

  • where can i buy more storage to my asus eee pc 900 ?

  • does that work with this? Samsung HS12YHA Hard Drive Disk 120GB 1.8" HDD ZIF PATA (ebay) and sorry about my bad english

  • hey i have a problem, there's no hdd connector. everything is identical to yours but the connector. any idea as to why?

  • BUYER BEWARE

I am on my second brand new Asus Notebook and it's a piece of Crap, the first one which I bought last year lasted only 3 months and crashed. Asus could not repair it and so they gave me another brand new one.

Like the first, the keyboard has a mind of it's own and scatters the letters everywhere while you are typing. Asus's Online Help seems non existant and I would return it but they would probably keep this one for two months as well.

    Asus sucks

  • @cheval572 mines fine...

  • Now i wish i gotten the 901 instead of the 900 :( I do have the linux version that means that i have a 16GB SSD and 4GB internal SSD :D )

  • Hello. Could I use this adaptor for and Dell inspiron 910 [mini]? It uses an Mini PCIe SSD. I was thinking of installing such an adapter, and put an CF card on it.

  • I am having problems with this. I installed the hard drive and the comp recognizes it, but it appears that the drive I took out was the only other drive in the computer. I don't have an SD card in the side so is there another drive? I ended up putting the old drive back in and then I was unable to change it to master status. The bios let me switch back and forth between the two drives, but kept insisting on keeping the new 1.8" drive as the master. WHY????? what can I do to fix this?

  • Is that a regular SATA2 port where you plug that HDD/ZIF drive on?

  • what is a good supplier for zif cables? I looked around and all i found was a five pack that costs as much as the hard drive.

  • Hey,

Long time watcher first time poster. I'm wondering if the HDD in this video came with the cable (grey IDE like thing), as i am currently in the market for one, and on ebay it only shows them as only the hard drive.

    Thanks

  • @MarkusNemesis typically you need to buy the cables separately.. search for ide zif cables..

  • @jkkmobile Thank you sir for the quick reply. I'll take this moment to say that i respect you and your work whole heartedly, i look forward to seeing more of it, especially in the Netbook field, if only Asus made as many models yearly like they did in 2008. Any reviews planned for the HTC Desire?

  • @MarkusNemesis Thank you for watching! not planning Desire review right now.. I'm more qwerty slider guy.. so droid 2 / epic / N9 stuff coming for sure when we get gsm versions..

  • this dude is Lithuanian and smart ... fear the eastern europeans !

  • Thank you very much for this video. I was worried about how hard it would be to replace the SSD in my 901 with a new one, but having seen this I'm pretty confident I can do it.

  • Hee!

    Very nice video's

Can give me i link for the hard drive?

    Mvg

  • Someone wrote below, "Why would one want a more expensive SSD with fewer GB than a comparable hard drive?" The answer is that one is going on a long bicycle trip and the vibration and shock of the ride will likely destroy the HDD.

  • @jackkessler And SSD is faster - I mean really faster, especially at OS boot sequence. Sometimes it matters.

  • Excellent 5/5

  • Is it possible to install pcie ssd chips on the 1005ha?

  • Why would you wanna do that? YOu got the chance to buy bigger, 500GB, HDDs for almost the same or even less money that you would spend on a 128GB SSD , which is the biggest one on the market now.

Think about it. You will have more storage on the go because the 1005ha's power consumption engine was design specifically for regular HDD(hard drives).

    LOL

  • Asus Eee is by far the gratest mini laptop/netbook ever created, every single aspect of it is user upgradable. Alot better than HP's poor attempt and Advents lame excuses for netbooks. PB are pretty good, but the speakers are prone to popping and the mainboard just giving up.

  • you should see the video tutorial about the Acer aspire one. which i've got... >_>

all the comments are "this is too much, i rather not upgrade"

With the acer, you pretty much have to take everything apart before getting to the ram and HDD. ITS NOT AT ALL USER UPGRADE FRIENDLY!!!

  • Can we use a

    1. 128 GB 70mm PCI-e SSD

    2. 64 GB Mini Zif SSD

    3. 64 GB Dell Mini 9 SSD

at the same time to get 256 GB of Solid State Storage???

Please jkk reply to this trick

  • @balanarahul Why the hell would you spend over 500 bucks to upgrade an eee pc?

  • Two questions:-

    1. Can you replace the wifi module with the 3G one just like the 3g on the dell mini 9: the easy way???

    2. Can we use 70mm PCI-e SSD with a Mini Zif SSD at the same time to get 192 GB of Storage???

  • I installed the OS on the 8GB drive but there was no way I could boot from it! I did all the BIOS configurations and I even disabled the built in 4GB drive but then it wouldn't boot at all. Any tricks?

  • we gt these in school lol

  • What i would like to see is how u connect the asus eee to a tv with either hdmi or svga ....

  • Awesome. You have some very useful videos. Thanks for posting.

  • is it like 900

  • If I were to upgrade the SSD, would the module be the same size as the OEM (8 or 16GB) unit? Meaning it would sit in that little space and screw in without need for spacers or tape? Is it even worth changing an OEM 16GB module to an aftermarket one of the same size?

  • can this be done to the 900 model as well?

  • Do you know, is it possible install 1,8 HHD to 701?

  • smashing vid, well done, you make it look so easy! thanks very much, chris

  • nice and well done your videos, thanks for them. Disk space is fundamental for heavy use of machines nowadays.

  • man you are a GOD keep it up

  • can you upgrade the 4gb hard drive that windows is installed on?

  • No, they are soldiered.

  • Comment removed

  • It isthe same...ZIF hard drive. Also the same one in most ipods.

  • i love his voice

  • haha yeah

  • I have an eee pc 901, but there is no zif connecter, just what look like solder points. Is there anything I can do?

  • ye, check my latest video... or jump to my site jkkmobile . com. It's one of the latests posts

  • 0:47 throw it away!??!

  • Where can i get a 1.8" hard drive in america? Preferable a website. Thanks.

  • can do it on the asus eee pc 701 sd

    please reply ASAP

  • Hello. Great video. But whats HDD is it?

  • Comment removed

  • Is there any way to cage that disk? I would feel pretty uncomfortable having my disk bounce side to side inside of my Netbook ;)

-- And no: Hotglueing is not an option :D

  • I think it's so unfair that they removed this option. :(

  • Test: 01:37

  • actually not as simple as what you all tought.

only put in the harddisk,, just like that simple 123?

as i know,, the ssd version if need to replace to harddisk,,need to solder 2 capacitor on the mainboard. why? bcos the harddisk pull more energy then ssd.

  • I dont have a eeePC, although I found this video tutorial enjoying. You make a good teacher. Unlike most of the people I see on YouTube.

    5 Stars *****

  • can buy External HArd drive?

    I mean the portable one?

  • " even " , lol.

  • srry. i ment, asking, can i use any amount of gig-size of the toshiba that is 1.8"??

  • How much GHz does the processor has?

  • well.. ca i use any sized hard drive (gig wise).. that are 1.8" still? thasts a toshiba

  • Hei JKK, mistäs noita valkosia 901:siä löytäis? Tuntus olevan kiven alla.

  • on the Eee pc.. yes you can...

  • even on the linux?

  • yes.. you also can

  • Great tut, thanks

  • can you replace a bigger ssd card rather than hard drive? what is the biggest storage for ssd card anyway?

  • i love your voice, i am boris the bullet dodger

  • Thank you for the 1st class demonstration.

  • Nice Video, thanks for your work.

    2 Questions:

    1st: What about the Speed?

Which one is the fastest for OS - SDD or 1,8HDD ?

    2nd: How to change the 1st Storage - 4GB?

    Thx

  • install the os on the ssd cus ssd has faster read speeds, everything else on the hard drive for storage :D

  • 1st answr: the os is faster

    second answer: no clue

  • Hey, I saw in the boot selection thingy you had Vista, does it run well enough on the ee pc?

  • Excuse me! Is there a way to identif if I'm purchasing the older Eee 901?

Could I tell by the size of the SSD or color?

    Please Reply Thanks!

  • Thanks for this helping video. I'm gonna buy 901 too and i was thinking am I able to add more storage. So thanks

  • sorry about double message, but i need to add that what i just tell.. it is a windows bootloader feature not a bios feature (for those who dosnt know it) and.. great video.

  • i dont think that you need to install os to the add drive, just boot it with windows installer and copy boot files to it, then its boot from ssd.

  • Лажа. уже нет давно там зиф коннекторов.

  • How big is this 1,8" HD?

  • 1,8"???

  • Yea exactly he said it in the name.

    Thats 4,6cm.

    Regards Humper

  • Wow

  • omg !!!!!!!!

my zif connector is missing in motherboard.

they r no longer giving this..........

  • id say dixons prob best place in uk to get windows xp version

  • whats the best place to get an asus eee pc with windows in th UK?

  • Just had a look at my 901. Seems Asus does not want users doing this. Took out the zif connector, covered the ram with a black material, and made the plastic casing smaller so I cannot fit the 1.8in HDD in there =[. F**k!

  • Just had a look on my 901 and unfortunately the ZIF connector is missing. It's got the pin-out on the PCB for it, but the connector itself hasn't been installed.

Looks like Asus has decided this is no longer required, so look out for this on newly purchased machines.

  • where can i find a hard drive like that that is lets say 60gb.. and if i do insert this new hard drive it will have the xp hard drive and the new one is that right?

  • hi, i want to do the same thing, but the HDD you buy from Toshiba don't have that adapter thingy

    where do you get it???

    thaks for the great video

  • Just buy a ZIF connector cable & adapter over ebay. Shouldn't cost you more than 20 bugs!

  • thanks again

  • Would you say that the 901 also fits an 8mm thick 1.8" HDD instead of the regular 5mm thick ones?

  • ok disregard wad i said.

  • I was just about to answer.. ;)

    There was nothing wierd..

  • this video is very weird, as in, after he has set up his bios to boot from his "toshiba HDD", he didn't SAVE the setting, he actually discarded them and exit. then he chooses the "earlier version of windows" and suddenly switched off the laptop... O_o

  • at 6.23, how come he discard the changes and still can boot from his new HDD after he changed it to boot from his HDD? zzzzzzz~ really weird~

  • Great tutorial dude, this is great :) five stars

  • Poor guys he is Finnish.

    Hyvä.

  • Im a little confused, I thought you took out the SSD?

  • the 901 has 2 ssd cards: 1 fast 4gb ssd(for the operating system) and a slower 8gb(for Windows) or 16 gb (for the linux version)

He took the slower ssd out. So the other is still in there and the system boots from there.

  • why cant you have both the stock ssd drive and the other HDD?

  • i have a queastion..

    not to the computer xD

ehm.. are u from holland.. or russia.?

cuz ur voice sounds.. europian :D

  • Either german or swiss...

    idk

  • im from swizerland. :D

the swiss have a very stupid english xD

  • He is german.

  • He talks like Mr. Bean.. lol xD ..

    Nice :]'

  • My 901 doesn't have the zip connector. My one is from the July/August batch so I guessed they removed it -.-

  • Very detailed and easily explained video tutorial!! I'm buying a 901 this week and my only concern ws lack of storgae so adding a 1.8" will be great. Excellent help, thanks!!

  • ey men, im typpin this on a 901.. its got an amazin sound, gonna like it.

  • can u do the same thing on eee pc 900

  • how much will the slower HDD drive affect preformace and can you give advice on wat make of RAM to use to upgrade to 2GB, lot of people with different experiences, some work and some don't. thank you in advance. keep the videos coming

  • where can i buy these drives?

  • newegg, tigerdirect

try googling next time before asking a simple question like that. You've now waited about 22 hours for this answer, when you could have found out in an instant with google.

  • sorry =) i wasn't expecting an answer anyway

  • I recently read that some 901's don't come with a zif connector. if i were to buy one now would I get with a zif?

  • why dose the linux version have a larger SSD then the XP Version when XP Is a more robust OS?

  • The reason is because of the "Windows Tax". To offset the price of a Windows license, the XP version comes with a smaller less expensive SSD.

  • i need desperate help, i'm from the philippines and i want to buy a 901, sadly it's not available in our country. and I don't know where it is safe to buy online...

  • Amazon

  • do you have windows pre installed on your hard drive?

  • where is the os installed? why did windows doot even if you changed to hdd? thanks.

  • I had XP on 4GB SSD

  • Do they make any other asus Eee pc laptops that have more than 80 GB

  • Can i like at two 80 Gb hard drives

  • nope

  • Thankyou JKKMobile for the very imformative video. I do have a question, though. Can the EEE PC 901 windows XP, SSD of 12 GB be upgraded to SSD 20 GB. And if so where can I get the appropriate SSD. I want to continue with the SSD, but I do want it alittle faster, and not to much tweaking. Don't need any explosions. Thanks Again for the cool Info.

  • sorry, but i don't know any place selling those SSDs.

You might ask some local Asus service or repair shop.

  • Do you think if I took the SSD of 16 from the linux version, and install it into the Windows XP it would work ? Without any problems or explosions ?

  • what is the size of the ssd?

  • I have one question

On battery, changing to new ssd how much affects Battery live.

    Please advise

    Thx

  • nice video!

    It is easy to understand.

  • Great Vid.

If I use the 1.8" zif 30GB hdd as the master will I be able to install XP and boot from it? In addition will the light indicators on the eee flicker in response to the correct hard drive activity or are the light indicators at the front of the eee geared to work with the activity of the 4GB SSHD drive only?

  • your videos are so good . keep it up!

  • Great Video. Thanks. I search this storage at Ebay but i cant find. Do you habe a idea where i can buy one of this ? Thanks.

  • Dobry filmik! Lapek oczywiście staruje rowniez z kart CF... Zachecam wszystkich do sprawienia go sobie.
