It's a virtue in our culture.People who are unemployed eventually end up suffering from a wide range of social and mental problems. The majority wants to do some kind of work. And what would be more motivating than working together, for a better more inclusive society? The way it is now, "work for yourself don't care for the less fortunate" is not very motivating at all for me.

But what I don't think you understand about disadvantaged people and unemployment is that everybody does not have the same confidence or choice as you to do those things. And the longer you are unemployed, the more you feel ashamed, your status and motivation drops. How can you
expect that kind of person to go out and build a business or get a job? Besides, he might have a criminal record or no real work experience and nobody wants to employ him anymore. It's that kind of discluding society that we need to work against. And we do that best with supporting the disadvantaged or people when they run out of luck (like lose their job, lose their family, do poorly in school and so on). Not just say "yeah be tough, suck it up and work hard" cos that's not going to help.

Heck I was unemployed for a whie but I did my own thing... thats not to say that sometimes there is just little to do, which I understand. I think when a person has a disability that is great and it is obvious that work is hard or near impossible (nothing is impossible), then they do rightfully deserve compensation.... but people who are ok to work take advantage of tax paying dollars. that is why we are partially in debt.
But if there were a whole lot of people out there just looking to "take advantage of tax dollars"... then why is not all of Europe, where welfare benfits are much higher, refusing to work and just sitting at home?
As I said, the majority of people have been taught to try to do something in their life, and so, the huge majority want to work with somethn. But if the work alternative is a 5 dollar/hour job then I sure see why some are not too motivated, when some people earn 500/hour.

However, they must be unable to work at all, a person in a wheelchair can still work an office job or something else that does not require them to walk. Okay, but you realize 1. there are not jobs for everyone (and many of those lower end jobs are more or less slavery in my eyes - people working for salaries that are far from legal in many other developed countries (rich european countries, Australia, Japan...). 2. There is structural unemployment. And the longer you go on unemployed the less likely you are to find a job/somebody wanting to employ you. You seem to be so unaware of the spirals of disadvantage that many live in.

The salaries are fine. you can survive on minimum wage. i don't see how the salaries are an argument. i will give u structural unemployment tho, that is a big factor. however physical labor jobs offer some an escape from that. construction or moving companies will hire people if they are looking for work and are physically able. it is still a problem, but again thats life.
What's fine with minimum salaries (besides some states don't even have them!)? No money to pay for your children's education, a decent apartment or even healthy food - not to talk about unforseen costs.
Besides, even jobs of minimum salary are not unlimited and everybody is not physically and mentally capable of doing those physical jobs. It's not as relevant to this disc., but nothing is fair with somebody earning 7 dollars/hour when company owners/bosses are earning 10 times more!!
@dufvasven first of all, there is a federal minimum wage so it doesn't matter if some states don't have a minimum wage. and financial aid will send those kids to college. i know cuz i'm on heavy financial aid 4 school. the army will pay too. and do you really believe that it isn't fair for the owner of a company to earn 10 or more times as much as their employees? the owners are the ones who take all the risk in the company, and they put in the longest hours. therefore they DESERVE more money.
Well, you know, a whole lot of those company owners inherited their wealth or are just shopping around on the shares market, changing their investements whenever things start going bad. Your risk argument is only true for small business owners (who usually don't earn that much anyway).
If owners work longer hours, then extra pay according to that is fair. But in the end company revenues have exploded/their taxation eased, while workers have seen their wages FALL or stay mostly the same

It's a virtue in our culture.People who are unemployed eventually end up suffering from a wide range of social and mental problems. The majority wants to do some kind of work. And what would be more motivating than working together, for a better more inclusive society? The way it is now, "work for yourself don't care for the less fortunate" is not very motivating at all for me.

Well, most people who go to uni have a middle class background and get help from their parents to pay off... so it's not as if they are in debt their whole life, besides, salaray inequalities are so high in the us that if you educate yourself you will always end up getting any money back you spent.

Heck I was unemployed for a whie but I did my own thing... thats not to say that sometimes there is just little to do, which I understand. I think when a person has a disability that is great and it is obvious that work is hard or near impossible (nothing is impossible), then they do rightfully deserve compensation.... but people who are ok to work take advantage of tax paying dollars. that is why we are partially in debt.

However, they must be unable to work at all, a person in a wheelchair can still work an office job or something else that does not require them to walk. And those struggling to get a job but can't find one should have welfare, but for a set time period, not for life. Okay, but you realize 1. there are not jobs for everyone (and many of those lower end jobs are more or less slavery in my eyes - people working for salaries that are far from legal in many other developed countries (rich european countries, Australia, Japan...). 2. There is structural unemployment. And the longer you go on unemployed the less likely you are to find a job/somebody wanting to employ you. You seem to be so unaware of the spirals of disadvantage that many live in.

Well, you know, a whole lot of those company owners inherited their wealth or are just shopping around on the shares market, changing their investements whenever things start going bad. Your risk argument is only true for small business owners (who usually don't earn that much anyway).
If owners work longer hours, then extra pay according to that is fair. But in the end company revenues have exploded/their taxation eased, while workers have seen their wages FALL or stay mostly the same

Because "their money" is money they have mainly bacause they are exploiting workers' of the surplus of their work! They would not have the incomes they have if it was not for the workers. And therfore I think it's stupid for working people, be they middle class or lower class, to argue against welfare benefits and unemployment benefits when the big money is in the hands of the rich/the coporations (and a whole lot public sector money is lost due to tax evasion - white collar crime).

A system of the rich&wealthy controlling the economy, controlling the media and fooling the poor into believing the system is just/fair and that there's room for everybody at the top (even though that's illogical), making them choose between 2 parties serving mostly the upper classes. Face it, without workers to exploit the owners/bosses would not get any money. Workers only need owners in a system where the people don't control the capital

See the big picture here. .The rich have laws in place to protect their interests, their income... laws to keep others from claiming what they see as "theirs". This enables people who can "play the system" to use resources/people to gain wealth. Rich people are in other words people who use the system to their monetary favor. But the system is not natural and if somebody uses us/the planet to an extent that creates inequality/exclusion we have every right to change the system and should

@dufvasven um what "system" are you referring to? capitalism? the system of working hard to make a name for yourself? last i checked, the way people got rich was by working their asses off and actually earning that money. it's people like you that think you're entitled to the spoils of others' hard work that are the problem with this country.

Not sure where to begin here.... but most people stay the same social class they are born. The thing you are describing is the myth of the "American dream". The US doesn't work like that in practice. Most rich people in society were born rich (in rich families). A minority of the rich became rich "from scratch".. And of those, how many became rich without using (or without the help of) other people? And in the end, there's just so much room on the top. France is a capitalism too
