a great voice of the 60's. Len began his career as a lead singer for a Philadelphia group, "The Dovels. " In 1963 he left the group to begin a new career as a solo artist. Two years later he recorded his first big hit for Decca, 123. I love all three versions of this song, Len's, Jackie Trent's and the Ronnetts'. They're all great and all special in their own right. Kudo's to them all. And a special thanks to Len Barry a Great Philadelphia blue eyed soul singer.
I don't know Jackie Trent's version of this song, which was written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil. But I also know versions by the Lovin' Spoonful and Linda Scott. I have heard that Sonny & Cher also recorded it, but I've never heard theirs. Ironically, I had neither heard nor heard any version of this song until the 1990s. Not to be confused with a different song from the same time period with the same title written by Steve Barri & P.F. Sloan that was a hit by the Turtles.
@rslitman Jackie Trent's version was also quite good. Basically almost ALL the versions were better than the Ronnettes'. They COULD have done this song quite well, but Phil Spector for some reason thought that "the record-buying public" wanted to hear an EXTREMELY slow, densely layered record in 1965...
i think better than jackie trent just brill sound

The most underrated singer in Rock n Roll history.

@jaemel1 So much of the Dovell's stuff and solo efforts never showcased this great voice. I am just discovering that.

I love the Ronettes' version, but this is not bad really. This uptempo version carries its own excitement. Good for you Len.

@MingnonDunn the tempo is just about the same

YouTube is really fucked up now. It places videos in "Recommend for You" based on your viewing activities.
So how the fuck did this dire dirge make it into my list?

One of my favorites, I first heard this track in 1966, and it still sounds great.

When I found this record I was shocked. Just killer! By the way, the group Action rated this very high.

Nice sound, Andy. It does have background instrumentation similar to the Spector- managed Ronettes (BTW - Now in the Rock N roll Hall of Fame!)
