  • It's amazing how well he still sings.

  • One of Brian's Greatest moments ever.... Truly great performance by him...Wow I have goosbumps, he certanly gave us many....Rock on Brian Wilson. will see you and the boys in April, 2012, in Arizona, All the Original Beach Boys Together agian On Tour, just like the Old days.Outta site................

  • Sublime!

  • The beatific look of contentment on Brian's face.....priceless. What a privilege to see him interpret this cryptic masterpiece!

  • OH MY GOD...wonderful, amazing, beautiful. Thanks for posting this.

  • This live set sounds even better than the album version!

  • @cbarrett34 someone should punch you right on your nose.

  • brian wilson I love you!!!

  • I noticed that some of these same band members backed up HEART in their "DreamBoat Annie Live" a few years ago.

  • Phenomenal! Oh my dear God. Brian, see you in Heaven.

  • Exquisite.

  • Glorious!

  • God Bless this man, his band and all they accomplish. There's something pure wonerful here.

We all stand better soaking this in. That's no airy fairy hyperbole. Add THIS music to YOUR day!

  • fabulous!!!

  • I see something beautiful each time I view this video....This time it was the very good looking girl playing violin at 2:45

  • @MrJuanlennon The whole band is top shelf.

  • @MrJuanlennon Yup, she's a hottie. Shame to have her tucked away in the back !

  • BW, Jeff Foskett, Taylor Mills & Darien do a wonderful, heartfelt rendition, & I love it. Still to this day & forever, Il mantain, Carl sang it best. His voice was made for Surf's Up, & I saw him do it, in Sept. '71, Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. I was in tears --he was simply put, in another zone--totally, In The Pocket. Wolfsky9

  • He's all California.

  • MAJOR PAT ON THE BACK FOR BRIAN....ITS NICE TO SEE HIS HEAD BACK UP..FOR SURE.

  • I've commented several times on this spectacular video. I am just happy that I can watch it everyday.

  • No one is better than Brian!

  • @Eyyoh77 You got that right.

  • Mesmerizing

  • I have to agree with the Cozmister...I saw the video from the Brian Wilson Tribute back about two years ago. After watching Vince Gill and David Crosby sing the song and listen to Jeff Beck play the same song, I was in awe...I had to go out the next day and find a copy of the song. I can listen to this a hundred times and I still love it. Thank you Brian Wilson.

  • Amazing...Simply amazing. I can't help but sigh throughout this performance. Was fortunate enough to see Brian and the Wondermints perform "Smile" a few years back at The Hollywood Bowl. It was amazing.

  • Speechless.

  • it jus' brings tears in my eyes - magical

  • Pure genius.

Brian Wilson is a national treasure.

    He made a difference.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • The best Beach Boys song of all-time!

  • er zijn er niet veel die live goed presteren, dit is een geweldig fenomeen, prachtig,ik krijg er kippevel van .Horen we te weinig op de radio!!

  • This is one terrific arrangement and performance of this song. The best I've ever heard this song sound and at a live concert to boot.

  • He still has incredible talent.

  • Poor Brian doesn't have his beautiful falsetto anymore. Still awesome though.

  • @sgtpepper1138 He hasn't had it for almost 40 years. The brightest star, fastest fade...

  • Despite his so called recovery, Brian is still pursued by his demons - you can see it in his eyes. Too sad. A tortured genius.

  • @Ingramdumpkiss I agree you can see a blank look in his eyes a lot of the time but look at his eyes when he smiles a couple of times at the end of the song. A totally diffrent continence to his eyes as though something returns.

  • Brian should have quit the beach boys after the SMiLE incident and started a new project with Van Dyke Parks.

  • Fantastic!I love you Brian!An amazing piece :-)

  • The most amazing song ever.

  • I love his smile at the end...YES BRIAN, YOU DID IT!!!

  • Brian pours his heart and soul into this...so beautiful

  • it doesn't get any better than this

  • Who did the falsetto ??

  • @psychodied It¨s Jeffrey Foskett

  • @psychodied Jeffrey Foskett does the falsettos for the Brian Wilson band. Listen to his rendition of She Knows Me Too Well. He sings it like Brian used to.

  • Though I will never know exactly what this song is actually about (no matter how many interpretations you could attach to it) it will always be a tear jerker to me.

  • Brian is a rock and roll Beethoven who will never be duplicated....his voice is angelic...thanks for posting this

  • eargasm

  • Columnated Ruins Daaaaaah-miiiiiiiiiiii-noooooooo. :)

  • got to get me one of them smile shirts

  • yes brian surfs up for us older beach boys

  • This is one of my favorite pieces from any artist.

  • @joshhumblecreative When I first heard this, it was, I believe, 1971 (the Surf's Up album). I eventually was fortunate enough to do some work with the Beach Boys on their tours, but it was during a time when Brian was not active with them. I finally got to meet him in 2000 at The Carl Wilson Foundation Walk For Cancer.

As a music aficionado, it was one of the standout moments of my life. How cool that he is so productive at this point in his life as well! Brian, you've defined excellence!!

  • Brian Wilson's Teenage Symphony To God will be with you in less than two weeks! SMiLE everyone!!!! :D

  • pure brilliance...but its sad to see the affect drugs had on him

  • In one song, Brian Wilson has captured the spirit of a generation.

  • The blonde in the green is by far the most beutiful human being I have EVER seen. kinda like how this song is the most beautiful song ive ever heard

  • The end segment is awesomeness.

  • "Columnated ruins domino" ... Oh my God ...

  • Mike Love I hate you

  • @Gaarakundo, spread love, not hate. You miss the beauty of the Beach Boy's music if you continue that path.

  • you can just see the power and emotion in everyone of his facial expretions and movements.

  • i like it........

  • On my surf's up cd (I bought it used) at 3:38 it's starts to skip, and I thought it was on purpose because it sounded really cool

  • Magical

  • gr8 musicians lift the song . the voice is still there.

  • What an honor and a thrill it must have been for those musicians to share the stage with Brian. This song has always sent shivers up my spine, especially at 3:40. This one and "Til I Die," both have the same effect.

  • Jeff Fosket, (false voice), is absolutely the bomb. Haven't seen you for some time my friend!

  • Such a great song.... It kinda sucks that they didnt release it in 67, but to see brian having a blast is just priceless. This song shows that brian's musical genius.

  • Mike love disliked this twice

  • He manages to nail it on 2.31. Go Brian - you're not the 'delicate' man they make you out to be.

  • Brain is a fucking Genius

  • By God, indeed! This handy group of fellas (and girls) provides a perfectly-fit solution to the potential hazards of Brian's attempt at a falsetto on the word 'domino', smoother than a pack of well-trained pitstop mechanics... leaving Brian to just be himself all he wants - which is more than the Beach Boys could do on stage. Kudos!

  • Brian is definitly the Beethoven of Pop Music. Surf's up is his best song ever.

  • I will never ever tire of listening to this song. My favourite rendition of it was Brian singing it at the piano for a Leonard Bernstein tv Special in the 60s. Bernstein was right to view Brian as a visionary even back then. I think this song is timeless and unique. There really is nothing else quite like it that I've ever heard.

  • All I can say is WoW!

  • dude his voice is still good. ridiculous to think that it was like 100 times better in the 60's

  • Underrated!

  • Really lame hand gestures... but great performance nevertheless.

  • @Goeslightly Learn about his health problems and you'll see why he does them instead of criticising.

  • @yeoGlover

Ah, sorry, I thought it was just his theatrics, not related to his mental health problems (which I am well aware of).

  • @Goeslightly No worries,he actually has a problem with his arms making him stiffen up,I can't recall what it's called now, makes him look so rigid sometimes so assume his team try and get him to do bits and pieces to look more natural. You maybe right that it's a touch of theatrics too,but Brian is Brian.

  • @Goeslightly Brian suffers from Tardive dyskinesia due to the drugs he was prescribed by Landy in the 80's, one of the effects of that is involuntary body movements which is why he makes the hand gestures a lot when he sings.

  • ; The movements aren't 'involuntarily', Brian Wilson is conducting the orchestra while he's singing. You silly goose.

  • When it hit 3:30 I just started smiling, and I couldn't stop!!

  • @TheCozmister Looks like SMiLE did it's job !

  • @TheCozmister Wonderful what giving up smoking can do. Those pipes cleaned up nicely and that tone is still present

  • Brian, your the best.Long live Brian. An Honor to listen to YOU!!

  • You are fearing for him at the start, then it's enjoyment, then it's back to why you loved it from the very start.

  • The second dislike is from Mike Love again. :)

  • Brian looked like he really enjoyed that. One can see a man overcome his demons to finally triumph. That deserved a 10 minute ovation.

  • A musical masterpiece!

  • If you listen to Brian now, you'll hear that his voice isn't like his on this video :(

His voice is amazing on this video.. but now i hope that Jeffery Foskett or somebody take the lead vocals, otherwise it looks not so good for brian's musiccareer =)

  • @eoras77 I saw him in 2007, and he was singing the lower parts, and Foskett was singing the high ones. Foskett is a Brian Wilson clone!

  • attention rap/hiphop freaks.....can you say "real music"????

  • well kevin here is another reason to feel good about the most precious thing in life bieng exposed to th e most wonderful people in the industry made for a wonderful child hood the picture of gregory peck is in 1961 live on christmas morning on my fathers morning talk show PANARAMA PACIFIC at the big eye this will be the cover picture of the overlook . for more recomended viewing go to spirit california blues randy,s back portch again thank you sanfordrowe@gmail

  • One of the most beautiful arrangements I've ever heard!

  • Who else thinks Brian Wilson needs to be declared a Historical Treasure by the US Government?

  • @1obxeclipsedriver Count me in... There is simply nothing in our entertainment community that can compare. This is sheer genius. When I attended Brian's concert in Clearwater, Florida a couple months back, I sat in the audience mesmerized and thought, "How privileged I am to be sitting here taking in all this musical wonder, and how fortunate to live in the Brian Wilson era. The man has been to hell and back and is still able to SMILE. Brian is the 8th wonder of the world...

  • @BigChiefLtd1 Absolutely. I wish I could have been at the concert in Virginia Beach this past summer celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Beach Boys, but work got in the way. :-(

  • This is what a genius looks (and sounds) like

  • This man is an absolute treasure. Rock on, Brian. Great performance. Keep it coming!

  • Sheer gorgeousity.

  • 2011年3月1日O県NK高校の卒業式証書授与でBGMとしてピアノ演奏されました。荘厳な雰囲気で最高でした。

  • Holy Crap was that the record..Or LIVE..Teared Up 3 Thumbs

  • brilliant....you play this mozart or beethoven..i bet they'd be impressed...

when u listen to paul mccartney's "ram" you here brian influences all over that album

  • I saw this back when he started this tour. Only hearing this song on the record so many times and actually hearing it LIVE was a religious experience....especially when everything crescendos towards the end. The Wondermints were absolutely amazing.

  • I heard the word, a children's song...people have debated, hated and refrigerated these lyrics since the song first emerged. It misses the point: this is genius. Without Dylan, The Beatles and Brian Wilson wewould still be singing simple four chord, I love you songs fit for teenagers (i'd toss Laura Nyro in there for musical complexity).

Wilson deserves his fame. His music was inspirational, unique and always singable.

  • @HollywoodHotel Oh yes, you are so right! This is as good as it gets and I just watched this video for the first time tonight. I hope this is available on a DVD. I saw them during the Pet Sounds Tour and THAT was a religious experience, too.

  • @HollywoodHotel Great analogy. I often imagine what heights "Smile" could have soared to had Brian gotten full cooperation. "Surfs up" was a just the beginning of what rambled around in his head.

  • Naked genius

  • Beautiful Dreamer! Beautiful Soul! God only knows where we'd be without you!

  • god, his vocals are spot on... brilliant

  • THis Is a Symphony, a masterpiece, Thank You Lord for Givving us Brian,

  • I bet Brian and Van Dyke intentionally said "columnated" instead of "colonnaded". It's like smashing together the phrase "colonnaded columns" into a single word.

  • Check out 3:33... he sings (just once) his original repeated part from the tag to this song, and absolutely nails it. Amazing.

  • @vj498

I hate to break it to you but you're hearing Foskett, not Wilson on the high notes to start the tag. Brian sings that part an octave lower. You can see and hear him make a silence between 3:36 and 3:37.

  • @footloosebowler awwww, you're absolutely right!! Usually I can tell Foskett's voice from Brian's, but in this case, they sound very similar.

  • @footloosebowler He's not an octave lower, more like a 6th I think. That's Brian Wilson we're talking about, he'd never sing one octave lower. ALWAYS harmonize, hahaha!

But yeah, he's not hitting the high notes. Bleh, he sings a great lead, composed the song, arranged it... it's not like not hitting the high notes will make him less talented.

  • What a God Given Gift! 'Pure Genius!

  • Comment removed

  • Columnated ruins domino. Makes sense to me.

  • This song is magical...my favorite one.

  • he is the beach boys

    god bless talent

  • Genius...

  • So beautiful. I love Brian Wilson, he is a genius, and he seems so innocent, fascinating guy.

  • He really still has it. Cool.

  • Utterly amazing. One can see the the joy in Brian's face and most importantly, hear it in his voice. The harmonies are tremendous as well.

  • Even though Brian's in his mid-60s now, just look in his eyes. That boyish brightness is still there after all these years. Way to go Brian Wilson!

  • Una de las mejores canciones del siglo XX.

  • If you heard this you now know there is a God.

  • Close your eyes at 3:42 and listen with all your heart and feel the magic!

  • @MrJuanlennon That part of the song has always sent me to another planet! A real climax just when you thought it couldn't get any better!

  • @lakefloor A lot of Brian's creations should be cherished the way famous paintings are.

  • @MrJuanlennon Well said my friend!

  • This holy thing.

    This holy thing.

  • 2:58

    gotta love that chromatism!!!!

  • THIS IS FUCKING AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL

  • Generations down the road will realize that Brian Wilson was a twentieth century Beethoven.

  • @potica69 Yah, and just think....he wrote, arranged, produced, and PERFORMS this piece. The man's a ......

I am a little man, he is a big man, I can't......you don't talk to him, you listen to him......I should have been a pair

of ragged claws scuttling across the floors of silent seas......I can't.......(Re: Dennis Hopper in "Apocalypse Now."

  • Simply stunning. The complexity of the arrangement becomes evident here, and Wilson's voice is heavenly. Wonderful!!

  • @letiz7 I agree! After about ten seconds I faorited this gift to the world of music!

  • Btw, the one dislike is probably from Mike Love. ;)

  • @lionheart1827 Ironicly, the ad on the right side of the video ( at least here in Brazil ) is "POWER OF LOVE"! Be afraid!

  • @lionheart1827 and Bruce!

  • @lionheart1827 : yep, ML keyed twice (as at 15th Oct 2011) .. & probably will keep on doing so ..

  • Incredible.

  • I caught this tour at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. It will forever be in my top 3 live performances of all time. We never wanted it to end, could've listened to him forever..

  • This is one of the best songs i've heard.

  • Tears come out like rain when they hear this music

  • fix htt p and ww w before you click on it. also look at this one

  • fix htt p and ww w before you click on it.

  • htt p://ww w.youtube.com/watch?v=69CXi6vM58g&feature=fvw

  • I love this song. The only thing is that it's sad to me that he can no longer sing "columnated ruins domino". His voice was incredible in the original version. He doesn't sing the first part, he comes in on "dove nested tower..."

  • @getyerkix Well Carl actually sang that on the commonly released versions of the song. And Carl always had a voice that could go even higher into falsetto than Brian actually. Carl's voice was the better of the 2 IMO but Brian had a captivating innocence in his voice while Carl had a yearning sort of hurt on ballads and a soulful, impassioned shout when singing up tempo, R&B type stuff. Apples n oranges I guess. If only Carl could have lived to participate on these performances with Brian.

  • yea thats how it's done

  • When he did the 1st take with him on piano he plays this superior bass pattern with his left hand on the piano. I just noticed the lad playing that part on his keys. Sweet.

  • Absolute Amazing !!!

  • why has this only been viewed 181 times?? Brian looks so happy to be playing it. The dude is in the zone. A rare smile at 3:45!
