One of Brian's Greatest moments ever.... Truly great performance by him...Wow I have goosbumps, he certanly gave us many....Rock on Brian Wilson. will see you and the boys in April, 2012, in Arizona, All the Original Beach Boys Together agian On Tour, just like the Old days.Outta site................
BW, Jeff Foskett, Taylor Mills & Darien do a wonderful, heartfelt rendition, & I love it. Still to this day & forever, Il mantain, Carl sang it best. His voice was made for Surf's Up, & I saw him do it, in Sept. '71, Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. I was in tears --he was simply put, in another zone--totally, In The Pocket. Wolfsky9
I have to agree with the Cozmister...I saw the video from the Brian Wilson Tribute back about two years ago. After watching Vince Gill and David Crosby sing the song and listen to Jeff Beck play the same song, I was in awe...I had to go out the next day and find a copy of the song. I can listen to this a hundred times and I still love it. Thank you Brian Wilson.
Amazing...Simply amazing. I can't help but sigh throughout this performance. Was fortunate enough to see Brian and the Wondermints perform "Smile" a few years back at The Hollywood Bowl. It was amazing.
@Ingramdumpkiss I agree you can see a blank look in his eyes a lot of the time but look at his eyes when he smiles a couple of times at the end of the song. A totally diffrent continence to his eyes as though something returns.
@psychodied Jeffrey Foskett does the falsettos for the Brian Wilson band. Listen to his rendition of She Knows Me Too Well. He sings it like Brian used to.
Though I will never know exactly what this song is actually about (no matter how many interpretations you could attach to it) it will always be a tear jerker to me.
@joshhumblecreative When I first heard this, it was, I believe, 1971 (the Surf's Up album). I eventually was fortunate enough to do some work with the Beach Boys on their tours, but it was during a time when Brian was not active with them. I finally got to meet him in 2000 at The Carl Wilson Foundation Walk For Cancer.
As a music aficionado, it was one of the standout moments of my life. How cool that he is so productive at this point in his life as well! Brian, you've defined excellence!!
What an honor and a thrill it must have been for those musicians to share the stage with Brian. This song has always sent shivers up my spine, especially at 3:40. This one and "Til I Die," both have the same effect.
Such a great song.... It kinda sucks that they didnt release it in 67, but to see brian having a blast is just priceless. This song shows that brian's musical genius.
By God, indeed! This handy group of fellas (and girls) provides a perfectly-fit solution to the potential hazards of Brian's attempt at a falsetto on the word 'domino', smoother than a pack of well-trained pitstop mechanics... leaving Brian to just be himself all he wants - which is more than the Beach Boys could do on stage. Kudos!
I will never ever tire of listening to this song. My favourite rendition of it was Brian singing it at the piano for a Leonard Bernstein tv Special in the 60s. Bernstein was right to view Brian as a visionary even back then. I think this song is timeless and unique. There really is nothing else quite like it that I've ever heard.
@Goeslightly No worries,he actually has a problem with his arms making him stiffen up,I can't recall what it's called now, makes him look so rigid sometimes so assume his team try and get him to do bits and pieces to look more natural. You maybe right that it's a touch of theatrics too,but Brian is Brian.
@Goeslightly Brian suffers from Tardive dyskinesia due to the drugs he was prescribed by Landy in the 80's, one of the effects of that is involuntary body movements which is why he makes the hand gestures a lot when he sings.
If you listen to Brian now, you'll hear that his voice isn't like his on this video :(
His voice is amazing on this video.. but now i hope that Jeffery Foskett or somebody take the lead vocals, otherwise it looks not so good for brian's musiccareer =)

@1obxeclipsedriver Count me in... There is simply nothing in our entertainment community that can compare. This is sheer genius. When I attended Brian's concert in Clearwater, Florida a couple months back, I sat in the audience mesmerized and thought, "How privileged I am to be sitting here taking in all this musical wonder, and how fortunate to live in the Brian Wilson era. The man has been to hell and back and is still able to SMILE. Brian is the 8th wonder of the world...
@BigChiefLtd1 Absolutely. I wish I could have been at the concert in Virginia Beach this past summer celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Beach Boys, but work got in the way. :-(
I saw this back when he started this tour. Only hearing this song on the record so many times and actually hearing it LIVE was a religious experience....especially when everything crescendos towards the end. The Wondermints were absolutely amazing.
I heard the word, a children's song...people have debated, hated and refrigerated these lyrics since the song first emerged. It misses the point: this is genius. Without Dylan, The Beatles and Brian Wilson wewould still be singing simple four chord, I love you songs fit for teenagers (i'd toss Laura Nyro in there for musical complexity).
Wilson deserves his fame. His music was inspirational, unique and always singable.
@HollywoodHotel Oh yes, you are so right! This is as good as it gets and I just watched this video for the first time tonight. I hope this is available on a DVD. I saw them during the Pet Sounds Tour and THAT was a religious experience, too.
@HollywoodHotel Great analogy. I often imagine what heights "Smile" could have soared to had Brian gotten full cooperation. "Surfs up" was a just the beginning of what rambled around in his head.
I bet Brian and Van Dyke intentionally said "columnated" instead of "colonnaded". It's like smashing together the phrase "colonnaded columns" into a single word.
I hate to break it to you but you're hearing Foskett, not Wilson on the high notes to start the tag. Brian sings that part an octave lower. You can see and hear him make a silence between 3:36 and 3:37.
@footloosebowler He's not an octave lower, more like a 6th I think. That's Brian Wilson we're talking about, he'd never sing one octave lower. ALWAYS harmonize, hahaha!
But yeah, he's not hitting the high notes. Bleh, he sings a great lead, composed the song, arranged it... it's not like not hitting the high notes will make him less talented.
I caught this tour at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. It will forever be in my top 3 live performances of all time. We never wanted it to end, could've listened to him forever..
I love this song. The only thing is that it's sad to me that he can no longer sing "columnated ruins domino". His voice was incredible in the original version. He doesn't sing the first part, he comes in on "dove nested tower..."
@getyerkix Well Carl actually sang that on the commonly released versions of the song. And Carl always had a voice that could go even higher into falsetto than Brian actually. Carl's voice was the better of the 2 IMO but Brian had a captivating innocence in his voice while Carl had a yearning sort of hurt on ballads and a soulful, impassioned shout when singing up tempo, R&B type stuff. Apples n oranges I guess. If only Carl could have lived to participate on these performances with Brian.
When he did the 1st take with him on piano he plays this superior bass pattern with his left hand on the piano. I just noticed the lad playing that part on his keys. Sweet.
It's amazing how well he still sings.
