The Winchendon Historical Society should be able to answer your questions in great detail. The story, as I understand it, is that the Whites felt the property taxes were unreasonably high. The property was actually offered to the town for $1. The town refused it (shamefully)... I can't imagine any logical reason for not accepting the gift, though I'm sure one was stated.
To bad it's gone...I live only 1 hours drive over the river and thru the woods to Winchendon. We were on our way there today and about 15 miles away the heater core went(real quick and kinda dangerous)Pull over real quick in a safe spot cause the windshield steam ups thru the defroster. In case this happens to ya.We'll find out some info.on this Castle...if there is any???
@StalkerWolf please share anything you remember. Good question as to why it was demolished, it seems very odd to me. We had a Victorian Castle demolished in Bolivar, WV similar to this one because it was the 1950's and people didn't consider Victorian to be historic at that time, even the NPS. The reasons they gave that it was 'in dis-repair, and too costly to sell or maintain'. However a Victorian Castle does still survive in Berkeley Springs, WV.
@StalkerWolf My Grandfather bought one of the marble fireplaces, for his new den, just before Marchmont was wrecked. Previously, the building was for sale at $38,000. At the time, the price of a home in town was around $9,000. No one bought. The family already decided to part with the property, so they turned to the town. The story was that the town thought it would be too expensive to heat and maintain, so they chose to decline. Rumors flew about small town politics - but don't they always?
