When I`m older I think I`ll roundup as many wild horses as I can get a couple of acres or enough land, stables & paddoks for them all. The majority of them will stay wild horses and not be touched by any human.
They do round ups to 1) sale the horses 2) control the population and 3) vaccinate them, most of the time they do a round up it is to vaccinate them against equine diseases, google about it and u'll see that there was a case envolving the outbreak of a equine disease that wiped out a entire herd. The one's that are adopted out are broken in first to the pressence of humans and you HAVE TO meet the requirements to adopt one, you can't have animal abuse charges against you.
@DomSubmissiveKitty on a added note, i done research, they don't adopt wild horses from round ups to rodeos, its against the animal rights act. The only way you see these beautiful animals in rodeos is because there is always a lying rancher that will lie on the papers to adopt these animals and then sale them secretively to rodeos for more then they had to pay to adopt them and i'm talkin about thousands...

My father Val and his brother Verl even had a great cowboy armed standoff with the forestry and BLM after they both rode into town and re-rounded up all the horses to set them free.

I think David Martin Anderson does a great job in his new book, 'The Last Good Horse,' describing horse round-ups in the 1930s. There's also an author interview on the subject on You Tube. Do a search under the author's name to find it. Great stuff. Great read!
They have to gather the who band to know which ones to cull. This is the problem. They cull the young and the old that won't make much longer. The government pays for the treatment of the old until they die and no one wants to adopt a young, wild horse, with no papers, that you can't sell. Everyone knows their are plenty of "wild" horses at the sell barn thanks to the people who stopped horse slaughter. America shot itself in the foot this time.
So you have to control them, right? So you have to take 5. 15 tops if it was an extremely productive year.\
You don't need to evacuate all 40 animals if only 15 are needed to be taken out. And there's more humane ways to do it then chase the poor horses around in a helicopter until they nearly collapse from exhaustion!
Honestly, I think the govn't is just doing this for the selfish reasons of the livestock ranchers.
The BLM leaves hundreds of wild horses dead and injured each year, help us stop the cruel helicopter chase of wild horses and sign this free petition to hold off the 2011 roundup-
I dont see many pictures of the wild horses starving because of over grazed ground because there are too many of them for the area. This does happen if they are not controlled in the numbers and the area they are in wont support them through the winters. Lets get down to the reality of it. There has to be some control on the herds sizes for this reason.
Wild horse advocates are not opposed to management of the herds, but there are kinder ways to maintain herd size - bait trapping, PZP sterilization etc.
But if these horses are not controlled they multiply, they have colts almost every year and in a couple of years the herd doubles in size, and keeps on growing in size.
But if these horses are not controlled they multiply, they have colts almost every year and in a couple of years the herd doubles in size, and keeps on growing in size.
Dont take me wrong I have loved horses all my life , but there has to be control on them to continue to let the herds run free. I have seen the wild horses domesticated. Many adopters let them run free in pastures even though they are contained to the smaller areas they do have the freedom of being a horse.
There are management alternatives like bait trapping, PZP... No one is arguing that they need to be managed. It's HOW they are managed, with disregard to family systems, cruelty, and at ridiculous expense to the taxpayer. Go to awhpc.com and read the section on solutions. There are many.
@MsTaterdog oh so we are supposed to control the herds by sending them to slaughter! very few find homes almost all of them are taken to mexico or canada to be inhumanely slaughtered!
@MsTaterdog For the Brumby horse poplulation to stableize, 89% of all the mares in each herd have to have 2 foals a season! They cannot manage that!! The beautiful horses aren't multiplying so much as they're having land taken away from them. I think the BLM should cut their shizz, and dedicate a 200,000 acre area to the wild horses, and leave it for them! The BLM are doing a terrible job in maintaining the wild horse population, just about as bad as the 'Rangers" are on Fraiser Island!
There were many lead stallions in many of the separate bands. the herd dynamic completely changes due to round ups. Family bands are obliterated and there is a tremendous disturbance & shifting in the herd dynamics for the ones left on the land.
And the ones adopted, auctioned, warehoused or whatever?? Their lives change forever the minute they are chased by the helicopter and put in trailers. Some adjust, of course, but they are no longer wild horses...
If you have a smarter and more docile stalllion the whole herd should be easier to work with. Some of these animals have better breeding and are more sensible than others. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar approved a big solar energy plant in the Mojave Desert on Wednesday [Oct 20, 2010], making it the fifth such project on public land in the West to win federal authorization.

2,700 WILD horses that will be rounded-up starting today in Nevada?
These horses are going to be confined to overcrowded pens where they will languish along with the other 33,000 horses who've been removed from PUBLIC lands.

Dear NativeID - You are right, it is great editing! And clearly, I have an opinion. But, no one lied to Kenny. The day we interviewed him, the horses had just been removed, and the field was empty. I posted this video days after the round up, so didn't know if or how many horses would be re-released. Herd dynamics, however, have been destroyed and I've got photos to prove that, too.
I am not opposed to wise management or good adoptions, but the way round ups are conducted are just plain wrong.
Why are our tax dollars being spent like this? If memory serves correctly, they have a hard time adopting these horses out; it's not as easy as it was in the '70's
Their doing the Pryor round up as we speak an its VERRY sad. Their running new born foals 10 miles down the mouatin for No reason. They captured cloud, conquistidore, seattle an so many others an are removing ENTIRE bands an not releasing anythere are only gona be a few n which may be lucky to get returned...
I am sorry for the event you witness. I don't know how you controlled yourself as you filmed.
I don't use the word "hate", but in this case I will. I hate the BLM.
Every single federal employee, contractor or private citizen that is involved in the ruin of our wild horses & burros WILL face a reckoning for their selfish, sinful, greedy lives. The Great Spirit is the One who has ultimate control of the universe. He created this world in a divine pattern & working order.
What upsets me is we have 33,000 horses in holding pens that may face death and yet the BLM is gathering more horses. I wish to see the study that proves that there are too many for this land does anyone know where I can get this???
its unbeleivable what ppl do to these horses and helicopters what r they gunna do next so ashamed ppl should think straight i dont like when ppl do this
It does seem out of whack that we have about two million cows chomping on Idaho range lands, yet cannot afford to keep 30,000 horses wild.
I trust that at some point during or after Kennys interview, someone mentioned to him that the BLM intends to turn loose on the range 130 of these captured horses, after they inspect them.
But mostly, thanks for posting this video of these iconic horses and thank heavens we had a wet spring, which helped drop the price of hay for our equestrian world.
This is so incredibly disturbing. The BLM is out of control, irresponsible and barbaric. They MUST be held accountable.
Please write or call your Senators and ask them to support HR 1018 "Restore Our American Mustangs" (ROAM). This bill has already passed the House. And the BLM did this anyway.
When I`m older I think I`ll roundup as many wild horses as I can get a couple of acres or enough land, stables & paddoks for them all. The majority of them will stay wild horses and not be touched by any human.

Do not stand for this! Take Action Now!
