@theshugchannel Union, Los Angeles, the train is a Metro Rail Red Line train. makes sense because that is where the train departed to begin the journey, and so on and so on as the narrator states.
My father-in-law was in the coast guard boat that was first to the seen. To this day, he is experiencing severe PTSD from the event and will never be the same.
Coach 34040 is easy to see its the car thats hanging off the bridge Behind it was a EL Capitan Lounge car that was used for the el capitan Coach 34040 Is A Superliner I coach 34040 Is now At beech Grove 34040 has to wait 17 years till its running again with a set of fresh thin amtrak stripes Some of it was damaged. Damage was on the left side Of 34040 The EL Capitan Lounge Car Became a Parlor car for the Coast starlight for train #11 AND #14.
all that diesel should have only come from the 2nd and 3rd engines, not the 1st, the first, a p40dc has armoured and devided fuel tanks, the 2nd and 3rd, f40PH's do not.
wow, what luck, the sleeper car passengers, for a nominal fee, gets a sleeper birth, free food, and safety from collisions. they were lucky, as most of the time the sleepers are at the front
@20PINKluvr The issue is, the bridge was built as a swing bridge without the swing bridge hardware. Apparently, they failed to properly secure it in the event of a barge hit because this was not a waterway on which barges were forbidden to travel.
I ran out of space a minute ago she and I were origionally on a Sleeper so its likelly she and I would have survived if we went beyond New Orleans that night but no way of really knowing I was in a recent Amtrak derailment in July on the Texas Eagle but no where near the sevarity of this one I was sleeping when it happened and used to rough Amtrak rides so when I heard the announcement the train derailed I went back to sleep untill hearing the second announcement thus realizing it was real
I remember that wreck like it was yesterday my mom and I were on that run traveling on a US railpass and she and I decided to get off in New Orleans to explore we were headed all the way to Flordia from LA I am so glad we decided to get off in New Orleans if we had not I am not sure I would be here today to type this she and I saw it all on the News and she just started to pray my reaction was holy shit that was fate
The time of the disaster reminds me of the Titanic in 1912. Both happened at around 2:30 AM. The pilot of the barge had no authority of being on that section of waterway. Not only that, the freight railroad that owns the track the train was on should have been alerted and if he was, he should have thrown the signal from green to red.
The time of the disaster reminds me of the Titanic in 1912. Both happened at around 2:30 AM. The pilot of the barge had no authority of being on that section of waterway.
I remember this accident, I was a research assistant for Dr. Joseph Metcalf & Dr. Rich at the University of South Alabama when he received the call for assistance. We were doing Ophthalmic Research for the Mastin Eye Clinic...and I wondered why there was a need for an Opthalmologist. Later, I found that diesel fuel was damaging the eyes of most of the injured who were submerged in water. Triage was setup on barges....
The lead engine mustve jumped nearly 100ft. Did the crew survive? The NTSB conclusion is complete bullshit. There seeming to blame the whole thing on the long dead bridge designers. The barge pilot was in a restricted waterway, he lost control of his barges, and couldnt read a radar. If it wasnt for that, there would have been no accident.
Pause at 21:32. That is Superliner I coach 34040. Even though it was slightly damaged and part of it was hanging over the bridge, it survived the wreck, and today is the last remaining superliner in phase III paint. I found this out in a Trains Magazine. And now, 17 years after being wrecked, it's currently in Beech Grove, finally being repaired!
This Sunset Limited train has not run east of New Orleans, Louisiana since hurricane Katrina. Prior to hurricane Katrina it ran round trip between Los Angeles, Ca to Orlando, Fl. After Hurricane Katrina it only runs round trip between Los Angeles and New Orleans.
What the hell are you talking about? Amtrack didn't install the bridge, it was built nearly 100 years ago by the railroad in that area. Amtrack just runs on the old trackage.
Very good Video, very sad.Its hard to understand why this Bridge was not installed right in the first place.they knew that it could pivot, too bad it took this misfortune to wake them up.This could have been prevented had they Braced that Girder right.
At 2:20 someone failed because that train is going over the Susquehanna River on the Rockville bridge in Marysville PA which is right outside of Harrisburg.
well 17 by 1 boat 20 by the other plus some sleeping cars didnt go over, and some swam to shore about about 1/4 died so... yea thats what happened. o and dont forget coast guard.
@FranknessProductions The front cars are usually the coaches and material cars. The sleeper and dorm cars are near the rear of the train. Most of the people were not thrown into the water. Sadly, some cars with people where.
@hlnews7 Yes indeed. They act like they were scared and they really were not! I wouldn't be a bit surprised that they load those barges with a boatload of lies for when disaster strikes!
@trinityct The pilot of the barge didn't know how to read radar, it was dark out anyway in which case, I don't believe the barge would be able to see it regardless.
@CasimusxPrime True - this voice is familiar! I thought I'm listening to commercial first.. only seconds later realized that he is actually narrating a movie!

in an odd way, i think the barge should have not slowed, if it had hit any harder, it would have broken the bridge, stopping the train. irony huh?
