The problem isn't so much the wave crashing down on you so much as it is the struggle to get back up for air. Once you get caught in that white water from waves that size you are being thrashed around constantly, often enough you smack against the reef.

yes he had enough speed to goo far down the line but didn realize he was in the shore break and got closed out.. mexico surf can be really clean and perfect but sooner or later beachbreak type waves will close on you. at that size you kick out and live to ride again. even if it was 6 feet deep there I am sure he was bounced several times and probably had sea water leak from his sinuses for a month.

you just learn to hold your breath and try to remain calm. if you fight it, that's when your arms/knees/shoulders/hips start ripping out of socket. if you go with it and let it just rag doll you, more often than not you will pop up fairly unscathed. assuming of course you can hold your breath for a long time while the pressure of the water forces compresses your lungs.

yeh yeh, I understand the 101 about staying calm, i got that part. I guess the question is how do they hold their breath for so long and get beaten. Copping a pounding like that takes a lot out of you and you need O2 sooner than usual. Perhaps it just takes a lot of cardio training. Mybe I should quit smoking too, that might help.

After the initial beat and rag doll I reckon you'd have to look up through the foam for the opening and take it.

I've been taking trips to Puerto for the last few years. Never got so worked in my life. Hyperventalating is the number one reason you start consuming oxygen. Cardio is number two. Atleast in situations where its cranking. once you start to panic its impossible to recover. and when you get tossed around enough you really dont know which way is up and which way is down. Theres no other way to improve that kind of conditioning than just exposing yourself to that heavy surf. exercise helps too. :)
