I used Lightwave for the early work, but used Maya for the more recent work. If you're wanting to start from scratch I'd probably suggest 3ds Max as Maya is heavy on menus. Hope this helps (;

If you want a background in MAX, apply an image or AVI to a bitmap and assign it in environment.

I's recommend maya, I started with maya and as I started to learn it, it bacame very easy to use even though the ui is frightening in the start.
