yeah I was watching my favorite show in the world, cosby show, right. And I was like "Isn't that Mavis Staples?!" then I looked at the credits and I was like "Oh I was right". I never knew this.
Mavis Staples was in Chicago last summer (2007) and drew a large crowd at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millenium Park. She is still know for her social conscious songs of the 70's. All those offended by the insensitivity and ignorance of some of the persons commenting, please remember that if you let ignorance offend you, you will ALWAYS be offended.

This episode bothered me because I felt that this was completely out of character for the show. I felt that the Cliff and Claire Huxtable characters were far too level headed and sensible to be religious and go to an empty headed church and believe in a make believe God.
If this is what some of yall call gospel music, I dont know about you... The song made NO sense at all... A bunch of "good" words thrown together.... NO sense at all....
Show some respect. The Late Great Marvin Gaye wrote that song. It was written in the late 60's when everyone was into socially conscience music - message music...

Whats the message... Because what THEY sang made no sense... This is not Gospel music, they are in church, they should have used a GOSPEL song that made sense... Give me a line that they said in this song on this show and tell me what it meant.
So I supposed because they sang it in a church scene its now a gospel song... Then the question I have for you is what makes a song a gospel song, because that is NOT a gospel song. This is what happens when people move out of their genre.
ok what ever you say i am not about to argue with you i just said my opinion you said yours i guess i interpreted the song different that is all so have a nice day
Well I'm sorry that you feel like that. You can not go to church for whatever reasons you want, and whoever, but you can't just stop things in your life because of adversity, because if you did, you wouldn't be doing anything positive. I just hope you know Jesus, that's the main thing, whether you go to church or not.
The message oh it song is in order for us to be holy we must come together and when we come together then we will be able to hungry hate and etc. I agree with rsvltsupstar, please I mean please listen to the words of the song before you make any comments!
And what I loved about this episode is that Dr. Cosby cast a real minister, who can be seen standing at the pulpit at the beginning of this clip: the Rev. Dr. Eugene Callendar. I found Dr. Callendar four summers ago, preaching in retirement to his church in Harlem, the Saint James Presbyterian Church. I shook his hand and introduced myself after the service. This clip, he said, was filmed at a church in Brooklyn.
this song is one of my favorites song wish she had it on a CD.
