  • Mavis Staples? Wasn't she a part of Curtis Mayfield and The Staple Sisters?

  • the staple singers.

  • Datz wat I'm talkin' 'bout.

  • yup

  • Yes.

  • @ncatina Aight, cool.

  • What is the name of this song? Who sung it originally? I have been trying to find this song with Mavis singing it but I can't find it any where.

  • The song is titled "Wholy Holy." It's a Marvin Gaye composition and is on his album "What's Going On" (1971).

  • wholly holy is the name of the song. Marvin Gaye recorded it first....then Aretha Franklin.

  • This is my favorite and my mom's as well episode of the cosby show. Thank you so much for this.

  • is it me or is that one of the staple singers singing lead in the chior

  • Thats Mavis Staples singing!

  • yeah I was watching my favorite show in the world, cosby show, right. And I was like "Isn't that Mavis Staples?!" then I looked at the credits and I was like "Oh I was right". I never knew this.

  • Mavis Staples was in Chicago last summer (2007) and drew a large crowd at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millenium Park. She is still know for her social conscious songs of the 70's. All those offended by the insensitivity and ignorance of some of the persons commenting, please remember that if you let ignorance offend you, you will ALWAYS be offended.

  • AGREED! & Well put!

  • I sang in the choir on this video. It was a wonderful ezxperience shooting the show. Dr. Cosby and the cast were enjoyable people.

  • That's great, I love the performance. Would you have the whole song? If so, please post. It cuts off right when it's getting really good.

  • I was there as well! It really was amazing - a multicultural group raising our voices in harmony - Dr. Cosby's wishes!!!

  • She gave me chills. She put her heart in this song.

  • the name of the song is wholly holy originally sung by aretha franklin @ Jamez8888

  • Whatever, they acknowledge how they got to where they are. You should try it sometime!

  • thanks for insulting a LARGE group of people that you don't know. real nice!

  • If this is what some of yall call gospel music, I dont know about you... The song made NO sense at all... A bunch of "good" words thrown together.... NO sense at all....

  • Show some respect. The Late Great Marvin Gaye wrote that song. It was written in the late 60's when everyone was into socially conscience music - message music...

  • it is a gospel song in its own way listen to the words of the song before you say it makes no sense ok

  • So I supposed because they sang it in a church scene its now a gospel song... Then the question I have for you is what makes a song a gospel song, because that is NOT a gospel song. This is what happens when people move out of their genre.

  • ok what ever you say i am not about to argue with you i just said my opinion you said yours i guess i interpreted the song different that is all so have a nice day

  • and you my friend are a hater. You are the reason i stopped going to church. Just a church pew hypocrit!!!

  • Well I'm sorry that you feel like that. You can not go to church for whatever reasons you want, and whoever, but you can't just stop things in your life because of adversity, because if you did, you wouldn't be doing anything positive. I just hope you know Jesus, that's the main thing, whether you go to church or not.

  • The message oh it song is in order for us to be holy we must come together and when we come together then we will be able to hungry hate and etc. I agree with rsvltsupstar, please I mean please listen to the words of the song before you make any comments!

    Thanks!!!

  • The song is titled "Wholy Holy." It's a Marvin Gaye composition and is on his album "What's Going On" (1971).

  • I feel this song in my soul.....i love this!!! Mavis Staples did a outstanding job!!! Big ups to her.

  • he left us more than the Bible... :) Jesus also instituted the Sacraments of the Church

  • This is for real man

  • And what I loved about this episode is that Dr. Cosby cast a real minister, who can be seen standing at the pulpit at the beginning of this clip: the Rev. Dr. Eugene Callendar. I found Dr. Callendar four summers ago, preaching in retirement to his church in Harlem, the Saint James Presbyterian Church. I shook his hand and introduced myself after the service. This clip, he said, was filmed at a church in Brooklyn.

  • Whats the name of this song , i will like to Download it on Itunes.

  • There will NEVER be a television series like this for a LONG time! This is unforgettable.

  • no never ever this is irraplacable

  • I love this but I would really like to hear the song to the very end. The ending ices the cake. Beautiful interpretation by Mavis!

  • THis is my most memorable episode and i look to watch it as often as it comes on...

  • This the bomb performance of the Show! I love the way Mavis layes this song down. Oh yeah...Holy! Holy! Holy!

  • beautiful!!!

  • Beautiful, beautiful!!!! Thanks for adding this song, as it is a favorite of mine.

  • well if its sumthin mean then y comment? and if it was so obvious im sure ppl could figure it out on thier own.

  • as i said be4...y say sumthin if ur just going to offend sum1

  • Why don't you stop being so damn sensitive and get off my sack. The comment wasn't about you anyway. CHOKE YOURSELF!!
