  • still my youtube homepage! after a few years now, just have to watch and listen evertime! love it!

  • It is Irish, not scottish!

  • @jagdpanther1944 It's actually Irish, Scottish, and English.

  • Tune is The Drunken Piper.

  • 1:22 starts my favourite part! I love that leg shaking thing. Looks like so much fun!

  • I've been looking thru all the Youtube versions of Sailor's Hornpipe to find one that looked "right" but after about 20 so-so's I happened to see this one.

It is so well done and with just the right timing and enthusiasm by these girls that it just "clicks". Very well done! I can watch it over and over without getting bored.

Thanks for posting, and thanks to these ladies for showing us how the Sailors' Hornpipe is meant to be danced.

  • It`s strange and funny :)

  • HARRR!!

  • sailor's only source of exercise on board a year-long voyage!

  • My Scottish roots are calling me home!

  • This is so good !

  • one of the coolest things I ever seen

    Nice work!

    Greetings from Brasil!

  • ...oh... my... goodness... - this is MAGNIFICENT:)!!! i absolutely LOVE IT:)!!! never seen something like that before - great posture, it looks adorable:)! keep it up, and thanks for sharing:)!!!

  • Thank you - such beautiful dancing of the hornpipe. Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.

  • "An' once we'd washed the blood away, 'twas little else to do

but dance a quiet hornpipe as the old salts taught us to.

Ah, the fiddle on the fo'csle, an' the slapping naked soles,

an' a jolly 'Down the middle, Jake, an' curtsy when she rolls!'

An' the silver seas around us, an' the pale moon o'erhead

an' the lookout not a-lookin', an' his pipe bowl glowin' red. . ."

-from "A Ballade of John Silver"

  • hi, i would love to know the name of the song the girls are dancing to

  • The song is definately NOT the Sailor's Hornpipe, it sounds much more like Roll the Old Chariot Along. The Hornpipe is the song that use to play at the beginning of the old Popeye cartoons.

  • Very good :)

  • In America, we have African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Chinese-Americans, etc. Why not Irish-Americans and Scottish-Americans? Most of my direct ancestors came from Scotland. I'm Scottish-American and am proud of it. I'm also a member of a Scottish Clan.

  • But these sailors do have surprisingly well-developed pectorals for their size.

(Men should keep to the boats)

  • the melody of this song is different from the one in disney's first alice in wonderland. so question: does anyone know if it is called something unique ?

  • I love what u both did, really well done, i'd love to see u guys do this in Australia or New Zealand :)

I hope u both do more posts :)

  • Wow, very interesting! I haven't really watched much Scottish Dancing. It's a lot funnier to watch than Irish, though I think I still prefer Irish because it's more disciplined. But this was very amusing :) I love how they appear to be somewhat drunk, although I'm sure that's just the dance!

  • Great dancing girls, loved it!!!

  • gracefull and elegent in an original way thanks.

  • Great performance! Fun to watch. Music is great as well.

  • Great performance! Fun to watch. Dancers are top notch. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are always great to listen to.

  • Hi, I am actually the dancer in the blue and my friend is the one in the white.

The list below is correct as to the names of the steps and yes they are the more difficult hornpipe steps to do. We used this music as opposed to the regular tunes (crossing the minch, my love she's but a lassie yet, etc.) because it was for a show so we thought it would be a little more entertaining. The tune is indeed "The Drunken Sailor" by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

    Thanks for the compliments :)

  • @drummerdancer

  • @drummerdancer.... the girl in the summer rig stole the show because its too hard to see you with the dark background....i believe the sailors hornpipe originated as an exercise routine in the old sailing navy..to keep the sailors fit and was designed to imitate the routine shipboard duties in close confines...am i right?..... anyway .your both awesome......as ali G would say..."very fit!".......martin

  • Charming!!!

  • Nice dance vid! Sounds set to:

HEY, JOHNNY COPE, ARE YE WOKEN YET?

    (Adam Skirving)

  • I love this ^^ they look so light on their feet, looks hard...

  • Bravo!

  • Its GREAT! :D I absolutely love it!

  • they're both girls aren't they?

  • Could someone post an MP3 of this song? I really enjoy this, but can't find it on itunes or online. Could someone please post an mp3?

  • I found this song on itunes actually.

The tune is, The Drunken Piper

The artist is, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards

And the album is, The Flower of Scotland

    I hope that helps!

  • wmatsuda , Im a SCOTTISH HIGHLAND dancer.

This is not an Irish Dance -__-

This is the SCOTTISH HIGHLAND version.

Also, I'd like to add, {and this is my own personal opinion so please dont get offended} I hate competition dancing/dancers. The make the most basic of steps look difficult. Thats bloody easy.

  • That was very very enjoyable to watch.

  • a lot of people, well, yanks actually. love annoying people of other countrys in normal regular times, and on paddy's day this will not have changed in ANY way, shape or indeed form, on Saint Patrick's Day remember it is often more realistic to own a Full Valid IRISH Passport BEFORE you can pretend to be Irish.

  • Why are you aiming that comment at me?

  • What the hell?

  • How can you tell whether someone is Irish or not over the internet?

  • I'll remind all the mickys of that on dingus day when they go drinking, it ain't their day and they need to go back home

  • Fuck paddys day. A bunch of drunk micks stumblin around, then they have the gaul to try and incorperate their traditions into dyngus day makes me sick.,

  • Beautifully done! Bravo!

The back ground music was quite nice too, is that a CD or a live band?

  • very well done!!!

  • I would love to learn this dance!

  • Does anyone know what each of the steps (in order of performance) is actually called? The correct name of the step? Would love to know

  • from the 2008 SOBHD

1st is the circle with an alternate break

2nd the scissors or sailor's buckle

    3rd look-out

    4th run and cable haul

    5th rocking

6th is half the inverted toe heel and the second half of the high cutting step.

And for Nankuranaisa101, those are actually some of the most complicated hornpipe steps and as an SDTA qualified teacher, I still find a few of them difficult. The dancers in the video did very well putting the steps together and dancing them.

  • beautiful! Thanks, from Dance Lover

  • My daughter found this as she was searching for dancing to watch. She is crazy about Irish dance and does dances well... but when we watch this dancer in the white..we just can't get enough of it. Her poise, her timing, her agility, everything is superb. She really has got what it takes. She makes it look easy. MORE POWER TO YA,GIRL! GO! We think you are TOPS! We watch it over and over. Who are you??? 。-wmatsuda

  • yes tunes like this are known as a "scotch measure"... this tune is "The Drunken Piper" and it certainly fits the bill. Has that "1,2...1,2,3" ending

  • that was freakin' awesome i love the Scottish!

  • yeh thas definetly the dance:P shoulda used the tune for the pieps that goes with it:P

  • heyyyyy that's soo cool! i'm a scotish dancer myself i'm from Argentina!! that's soo cute!! very good dancers! AND PIPERS as well!

  • hilarious

  • the dancers are very good... and the pipers are very good too. Not completely what I was expecting, but very well done just the same.

  • Bravo ¡¡¡¡¡

  • I love this dance the rocks is my favorite part. Theres a few steps they did that Ive never seen before but I guess thats cause its scotland its like when I see canadian dancers I get confused cause they have different steps. The name of the dance is sailors hornpipe not the tune many highland dancers are done to multiple different tunes.

  • Thanks! Well these are actually Canadian Scottish dancers, so that could be your reason :P

  • @cookiemonstermmmlove The SOB has a list of all the possible steps that dancers all over the world can pick from in The Book. It's the same no matter what country you're in so if you just read it you'd understand.

  • i love this kind of dancin´

  • A very nice tune and dance. I really think the pipes sound great no matter where you're from.

  • Nice dancing but the tune is "What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor" not the Sailors Hornpipe.

  • You can do it with anysong that works... just so happens in some mayjor competitions they use this song aswell.

  • Great Piping & Dancing...However, The tune you are playing is called DRUNKEN PIPER not Sailor's Hornpipe, correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe The Sailor's Hornpipe goes something like " Di da de da da-You know The popeye tune! Now maybe the Drunken Piper is a form of hornpipe? I always thought it was a march? Like part of a set that included Devil amongs the Tailors , and Inverness Gathering?

  • Is it that the dance here is the sailor's hornpipe, and to popeye tune is a tune called the sailor's hornpipe. Not entirely sure, but I think there may be something in it. Mind you, I love this tune, the drunken piper, and yes, the dancing is excellent.

  • best version of the Sailor's Hornpipe I have ever seen. your turnout is perfect. I did highland for a while but i never got far enough to do the Hornpipe it looks like hard work but a lot of fun.

  • That was ADORABLE! You kids are great. Very enjoyable to watch and looks pretty darn difficult to me. I've known the tune as "What do you do with a drunken sailor?" But I love the Royal Scots Dragoons' version.

  • No problem, glad to help.

  • Royal Scots Dragoon Gaurds, its from their CD "Flower Of Scotland"

  • Many thanks !!!

  • The tune is called the drunkenpiper

  • I know, but who plays this arrangement ?

  • What tune they are dancing to ?

  • Oooh is that you in the white? You look rather smart =)

  • Excellent.

  • Wow, that's a completely different version than I've ever seen before...

  • This is my favorit Scotish dance too. ^^ I have always loved Scotish and Irish music because they have alot of emotion to them and they're worth danceing too.
