Blissfully screamed this song out as loud as I could last year when they played in philly. Thank god it was so loud no one could hear. Just a beautiful simple perfect rock song.
I understand if people think this song is catchy, but I don't know why you'd consider it great. The guitar is boring and repetitive, the drums are uninspired. The vocals are good though. Thumbs down if you like, just my opinion.
@tapastro That's an awfully simple way of looking at music, don't you think? I remember I used to think like that when I was maybe 14 years old, but music is not as simple as having cool guitar riffs and drum beats. This song isn't just "catchy". That is not where the appeal comes from. Maybe when you mature a little and stop thinking you know how to break down and judge music, you'll understand.
@Oggranak Feel free to give me your opinion then, instead of just criticizing. I'd love to hear a seasoned music critic give me their take of this song.
@tapastro 'My opinion' is that music's appeal is too complex to be broken down that way. I'm not going to do the same thing with different criteria because that would be missing the point, don't you think? All I can tell you is that from experience I can say that a song like this has some kind of nuance that maybe doesn't have obvious appeal until you're a bit older/more experienced with music. I can't pinpoint what it is, but plenty of people with otherwise good taste have found the same thing.
@Oggranak Ah yes, "good taste." Surely experienced people have this good taste that you speak of, but not me. You have no idea what music I listen to, other than -not this-. That you think you are able to know my musical taste, and judge it afterwards, shows how experienced and mature you are. I can have an opinion that does not belie my general opinion of genres of music.
@tapastro You clearly missed my point, which is that plenty of people have found something in this song to love, and these are people who know plenty of good music to compare it to. I was using this point as evidence that this song is effective, I wasn't saying "people with better taste than you like this so it must be good". As far as I've seen, the only way we have yet found to properly criticize modern music is stating its effects.
@tapastro So what I'm essentially saying is that there are a billion hard-to-pinpoint factors that affect how a song impacts a listener, and when a song is analyzed such: "The guitar is boring and repetitive, the drums are uninspired. The vocals are good though," it very much resembles the mindset of a young person who thinks they know everything, or more accurately, thinks they can figure out anything with ease. I know I felt that way when I was younger, but I grew out of it.
@IIIRounder Serious?what's your problem with Creed? Some of the best lyrics and delivery possible."carn your terk mer higherrrrrr!!!!!" just messing around...I'm with you man. I just think that GBV has not put out any underrated stuff. It is what it is. People who like GBV will like it for what it is... for example tapastro2 will never get it. Tractor rape chain is one of GBV's most popular songs. I cannot be underrated. Ya know what i mean?
in all earnestness, I'd love to get you to further explain why you think this is a bad song. I looked at your account, and you had an upload where you were speaking in length about music production. The complete lack of production value i feel is a purposeful part of the appeal of Bee thousand as an album, where They chose one track which was initially taped on blank videocassette. Less is often more, but I'd love to hear what your take is, if you have the time that is.
