  • Whoa. There's a world championship blacksmithing competition?!!!

    Who new....

  • God look at the beautiful arms on that woman! so hot!

  • oh yes farriers; the ultimate experts at shaping metal in half circles and hole punching.

  • daaang girl got guns

  • @dammitcrap: have you got forced draft for your bbq? I'm using a hair dryer.

  • @johnnysgretch: a horse has very limited patience, and you needs its cooperation. Speed with accuracy is important.

  • I've done blacksmithing making oysters dredges and I bet neither ine of you dudes have made an oyster dredge,

  • I was in the 2000 competition as the only striker on the floor :) (ahh the apprentice years!!!). At that time the competitions was separted (farrier competition ran 9 days, blacksmithing competition was during one of those days). Now the farriers can pick up extra points if they enter the blacksmithing tourney. We placed 3rd/4th in 2 of the 3 events. Was very fun seeing competitors from around the world!!!!

  • At beginning of video looks like guy in red shirt on the right is lighting a cig off the fire lol

  • That woman is hot. Wow.

  • i would not EVER cross that woman. If i did i'd live in fear of my life, for the rest of my life.

  • Ya horse shoers for sure, I don't know why these people try to see who can shoe the horse the fastest. A little crazy,,,, Relax and put some craftsmanship in your work..

  • they really beat the hell out of they're anvils though

  • I'm a trained blacksmith and I say this with a little bit of shame, but those farriers really put us to shame in work ethic and shear productivity.

  • @davepen16 i hope u really are a trained blacksmith and not a 16 year old. i have been trying to start forging as a hobby of mine, but all i got is my bbq grill, charcoal briquetts, railroad spikes and a 25 lb anvil. i am trying to get into knife making, but so far all ive done is screw up 4 railroad spikes. got any tips? btw im trying to go for a bowie

  • @dammitcrap I don't have very much experience with knife making. I mostly do artistic stuf ie. sculptures and the like. One tip I guess I could give you is to try to get your hands on some real coal, that would help. A bigger anvil would also help you out alot, but I know they are expensive. Good luck

  • @davepen16 thanks. i went to charcoal briquettes because i botched four bbq grills worth of wood in an attempt to make real wooden charcoal, so i just gave up lol. and yeah... im going to have to settle on my 25 pounder for awhile lol

  • im going to look like that chick someday. haha im going to college to be a farrier

  • ela na femena...?

  • I'd like to see anyone who can make a better set of tools than GE and don't say you make all your own tools because you don't

  • personally, I stay away from farrier work because I don't want to cripple a horse

  • this is a farrier contest not a blacksmith competition. Farriery uses some techniques from the blacksmith but the only similarity is a forge and an anvil. Some farriers get into blacksmithing from there horseshoeng training but most do not.

  • It does not matter. You all still poop out the same hole!

  • I'm a hobbyist smith and knife maker and to see trades people decry one another is just disappointing. Great video just a shame that there seems to have been a petty furore in comments. If more trades people gave information and less criticism then perhaps an art form would not be dying.

  • oh there are blokes there also?

  • Well, instead of wasting heat making horseshoes that will never serve anyway, why don't they address REAL problems like world hunger ?

  • @chialeux514 Yeah! Make some metal sandwiches or something!

  • Blacksmiths make tools, equipment, art

    Swordsmiths make weapons

Armorsmiths make plate, chain, and leather protection

They all fall under metallurgy and the art of metalsmithing

  • A good blacksmith ought to be able to make a horseshoe. It takes a farrier to shoe the horse though. A good farrier is half veterinarian, and may or not be able to do other blacksmithing jobs. He doesn't need to to be a good farrier.

I'm a blacksmith, you won't catch me trying to shoe a horse, I don't know enough about it to avoid the risk of ruining the horse.

I pegged the woman as a woman at first glance, great shoulders on her. Yum.

  • BEWARE of the RED TOMLINSON school of horseshoeing.. RED IS A THIEF

  • I would not hit that thing with the hammer like that and several times in a row for sure, but im not a blacksmith either.

  • for Christs sake people, farriers are just types of blacksmiths, like gunsmiths and blade smiths. Blacksmithing is referring to the heating and working of the "black" or heavy metals

  • no they are not! farriers use different tools and do not work hot anymore. sorry, but i have little or nothing in common with farriers. we just both smell bad at the end of the day.

  • @capnnewb; Dont be a moron, I am a farrier. I work in my forge with every horse I shoe. Also like a LOT of farriers I make a lot of my own tools and do some ornamental smithing as well as making tools. I forge weld weekly. Dont be so ignorant. Farriers need blacksmithing skills. Without blacksmithing skills your just a hack under a horse. I'm also a member of this association and yes the World Championship Blacksmiths are all Farriers.

  • @HoofSupport hey, mate i hadn't slept in a while. most farriers i know (i only know about three who are still working as farriers) don't do any hot work at all or make their own tools. i am not always as ignorant as a i sound. a farriers skil set is different then a blacksmith. i am a blacksmith and make ALL my own tools and what i haven't made i am replacing with ones i have. now, that may be beacause i am cheap. i am not in abana beacause i am too cheap to pay for it, though.

  • @capnnewb , your full of bull-shit, im an apprentice farrier and i make everything from scratch (shoes, tool etc.) you should keep your mouth shut if you no nothing about farriers.

  • pfft farriers

  • dudes got a shoe burning up in the fire at the end of the video

  • haha i thought she was a he at the beggining of the video :p

  • I am Blacksmith, shoeing a horse, as well as a bladesmith, forge welding, making general tools and artisan works, are all part of being a blacksmith, a true blacksmith is well rounding, there is nothing he/she cannot do or make or he/she isn't a true smith. and it takes year to accomplish all of it. it has taken me 8 years to reach were I am at.

  • You are sterotyping farriers. You don't truely have a understanding. I have seen many of blacksmiths and knifesmths and other metal workers that can not build a proper shoe. It takes practice as do all things. Are all blacksmiths well rounded? No some make chains, some are good at forge welds, There are lots of possible projects. But ask your self, is that person blacksmithing? Yes, then he is a smith.

  • ok look u guys r retarded the way it was a hundred or so years ago was that there was a blacksmith who knew how to do everything that the people needed ( shoe horses sharpen a scythe forge tools whatever u can name that is metal related ) but now since the need for blacksmiths has decreased there are two sects, a artisan blacksmith, and a ferrier and they are two differant types of blacksmith.......

  • thats some hard ass work.

  • this sis very silly argument going on here. it's like arguing if a dentist is really a doctor. people specialize, ok? some shoe horses, some make knives, some do a bit of everything, and some split hairs.

  • This isn't backsmithing any more than bladesmithing is.

    It's a specialization.

A blacksmith should be able to make almost anything, including horse-shoes and knives.

Not so the other way around.

  • I see a coke forge, an anvil, and a hammer. I don't see any horses, do you? These men and women are the best BLACKSMITHS in the world. They can make a horseshoe so perfect it looks like it was made by a machine. With that talent they can make any blacksmithing piece with relative ease. Candlestick holders, door knockers, gates, ect. And by the way there's a class where they have to make their tongs to make the shoes. Most of the tools they are using here are hand made by them!

  • As a professional smith, I have to say that the masters of old named these particular folks farriers based off of the word "fairy". :)

  • You may be a professional blacksmith, however. Right now you're being an amateur idiot.

A little research in entymology shows it's derived from Latin (Ferrum: Iron) and it's spelling and pronunciation changed as it migrated through European languages.

Now, go back to your shop and beat on some metal.

  • And I would say, try doing some research into "humor" I think you will find that its a great way of poking fun at folks to serious to take a joke :)

  • They are still trainned in the art of blacksmithing, The same turning , forgeing and also welding are applied,

  • Sure! They are forging hand made shoes. In most cases they make there own tools. This is infact a blacksmithing competition. I am a farrier and i am a blacksmith. Reseach the history of both. You're right i some instances. Not all farriers are blacksmiths and all blacksmith are not farriers. But these farriers are taking fire, steel and force and making shoes hince they are blacksmiths.

  • He's 100% right this is NOT blacksmithing, It's farrier's work.

Not to put them down but Farriers are very specialized tradesmen (and women), who happen to use some of the same tools that Blacksmiths use.

A Blacksmith might do some Farrier work once in a while but will probably grumble about it. Farriers, on the other hand, rarely do actual Blacksmithing work.

(now I'm talking about the past here of course, nowadays the line is very much blurred when it comes to the forge-arts).

  • actually i would say it is the opposite. in the US blacksmiths and farriers were often one in the same in the old days where as now there are more dedicated farriers and dedicated blacksmiths.

  • You've got it backward my man. An artistic blacksmith has neither the tools, skills, or horsemanship required to shoe a horse. A GOOD farrier has all the skills and tools necessary to make a artistic piece. Artistic pieces are way easier than the tools and horseshoes a good farrier makes because the precision doesn't have to be there.

  • This is only half true; an artist blacksmith can shape pieces at will, without any precision, if he's not following a blueprint of some kind...like freehand sketching in iron. But when he has a blueprint (restoration or custom pieces) or has to do many similar pieces that will go together precision is a must, and everytime on different shapes.A good smith is one with good mind, eye and hands all working in harmony, whatever he works on.

  • @Blacksmith1964 She just tilted what the sign =} 0:04-0:06

  • @Blacksmith1964 and at 0:27 and the farriers sign is beside it =}

  • Farriers in the most part Are Blacksmiths

  • Farriers can be and in most cases are blacksmiths! They are just forging shoes.

  • That's like saying i'm a machinist and I only machine brake parts. lol Sure it may meet the technical definition but the difference between farrier and blacksmith is night a day!

How many farriers are as skilled and as rounded as an expert blacksmith?

  • They're not blackies, they're farriers!

  • @p00t00b ; Many farriers do blacksmithing work. They make tools, and horseshoes. Its more utilitarian. Its like saying those who make knives are not blacksmiths because they only make knives.

  • @p00t00b I´m artist blacksmith and I say: Every blacksmisth must be able to forge a horseshoe! HORSESHOE is the BASIC!
