We sang this to my poor mother at her surprise 50th birthday party. She was an excellent sport and nearly choked from laughing so hard. Now a few years later, she still refers to it as the "best party ever!"
The 2nd verse as I learned it was The Old Gray Mare, she went down the Delaware, looking for her underwear, couldn't find them anywhere." I'm surprised there aren't more verses kicking around.
My grandfather had a spud farm in tasmania many long years ago, now i have grown up and i find myself singing this song to myself, and even out loud. It makes me think they were the good old days. Thankyou for posting this clip, and the best.
This is how you sing a folk song. It's beauty lies in it's simplicity. Hell, this is how you supposed to sing ANY song, not like those losers with their horrid improvisation in American Idol.
@milantaus Yeah. My mom turned 61 on her last birthday, and I sang that to her. All I got out of her was, "Hey, now, maybe I am better than I used to be many long years ago." This was in church when I sang it, mind you, and she turned to my aunt and said, "You know what she started singing as soon as I sat down?" When my mom told her, my aunt started laughing.
Hello! I share this song with the 2nd graders. There is a song in the literature book about the facts of USA using this tune. The students like your version very much, especially the kazoo part... they think it sounds like elephant.
@krios66a Yeah, when your parents get old, that's what you should sing to them. I did that to my mom on her last birthday, and she said, "Hey, now, maybe I am better than I used to be many long years ago." Who knows? She might get revenge and sing it to me on my next birthday.
This is by far the best version on youtube.......Only reason i found out about this song is i was watching baseball braves vs phillies.. And chipper jones 38 years old Hit his first homerun from left side of the plate this year and our announcer said the old grey mare aint what she used ot be
@boegerm Instead of her singing it to you on your birthday, you should've sung it to her on her birthday. My mom's birthday is coming up soon (61), and instead of "Happy Birthday", that's what I'm going to sing to her.
im sry the musician is quite talented but when the old jewish man in the simpsons was dancing with his pants down singing this it made me not take the song seriously
Cheers, mate. The star I'm looking at has your name on it. I sincerely, mean that , my friend - mind you, it's getting frign'n dark. All the best, whatever that means.
"The old gray mare floatin' down the Delaware, in her summer underwear, lookin' for a winter pair, the old gray mare floatin' down the Delaware, many long years ago."
OH GRAY MARE, SHE AINT WHAT SHE USED TO BE. Infact, in the 1880's my gray mare got old and she aint what she used to be. So this song is so fitting to my life, and effected me in such a big way, i cried at the bit you brought the kazooie in. It reminded me when i ate sausages in my Mare, Thats right, IN my mare. My mare was called lego, and lived in a house. Infact there he is now, say hello mare. HELLO! hes a nice mare isn't he. NO IM NOT. oi stop it mare. anyway gotta fly to africa.
Thanks for posting. Mom my. before her passing this past Dec used to say this phrase and also say this ditty....thanks for the memories, also a good song.
The reason I came to see this song/video, is because I am reading a blog, about an Arabian breeder. She saw someones GORGEOUS gray mares, with fantastic pedigrees (their registration papers) and came and saw them several years later, and they were still as great as when she saw them the first time. So the Arabian breeder said, the person who wrote that song, wasn't talking about those horses.
i realize this comment was written a month or so a go, but i have to reply. I believe the song writer is referring to the mare's stamina and physical ability, rather than its appearance. I've had young and old mares, and though the old ones dont look bad, they do tend to see a marked decline in physical ability in their late years. Nearly all animals do, its only natural.
Kentucky Mommy here...I just showed my 4 year old daughter "The Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly" and then she clicked on your rendition of "The Old Grey Mare." She wants to know what tht instrument you play with your mouth is called. I think you have a new fan!! ;o) -Kentucky Mommy

and maybe just as a tip... if you'd actually play this as an intro at one of your shows. The crowd would go nuts and sing along! Believe me !
