I love shirebrook, been visiting it almost 40yrs,yes its changed,a lot has happened,a lot has been and gone. But its the future thats important and not dwelling on the past,it has a nice market, good shops and things happen there, and there,s some smashing people too.Fuck the knockers, nowhere is perfect and bad can be found in any town and village in England-go look,I have, and seen it.The Gate,Drum,Northern,Swan old faves gone all but one,no better night out at one time down there. But onwards.
world that for many was their life..when the mine closed down it took with it the whole community and replaced it with nothing but memories of a time when men were men and earned decent money for a hard days graft followed by a pint in the welfare before heading off for their dinner bed to start again the next day..many hard men worked the pit and they must now look back at what once was with heavy hearts....shirebrook is lost and the ghosts of the past still roam the mine and will do forever.
@agaichapter25 All quite true, but whats gone is gone, and whilst we should not forget that, its for those who come after to keep the legacy of the hard work of those who went before them alive. To kep a sense of community,a place worth living in,and not allow councillors and elected representitives to get away with doing sod all for these communities.Working class people built them, working class people must keep the faith now and see the work carries on.
Fact is the whole area fell into decline with the pits closing down thru thatchers spiteful attack on the NUM.when the pit closed the work dried up and for first time school leavers could not walk into work at the pit,the whole work ethic and the pride miners felt when they dragged their wages at the end of the week was suddenly gone..there was nothing left and mainly things have stayed the same ever since..sportsworld now sits on top of a lost underground world full of the ghosts of a lost ...
buisnesses, lots of food places, and not to mention europes largest market SQUARE, not bad for what was a village up until recently. theres lots of recreational grounds, some brilliant pubs, its the minority of PEOPLE that make the place bad by spraying grafiti in public places (usually of a badly drawn penis or a crap tag) and throwing there litter about etc. overall i think youve just highlighted the worst bits of the town here, i could make a video which would
shirebrooks okay, much has changed since the upload of this video, besides which, youve taken photos of all the shops when they are closed, also, these are all of and around the town centre, if you go into the new estate, lean vally drive etc, its actually really nice, and for a small town, theres alot to do, community centres, youth groups, gbh skatepark, leasure centre, they are building a tesco, sports direct distribution centre, the market has now had a facelift, theres some thriving
@tenodogblu No it isn,t,get out and about the country, look around, you,ll find far worse, far worse indeed. All pit villages took a hammering after 84 but they go on because of spirited commitment of those who do also.
@MrBulldogtools Didn't mean to offend you sir. I come from the north east and we have suffered too. Parts of Newcastle and South Shields really felt the impact of pit closures just as Shirebrook has. We have lots of men who have never worked since the mines closed well over 20 years ago. My comment was aimed at the government who seem to have forgotten all about pit villages and what they contributed to the nation as a whole. Community spirited folk do their level best with limited resources xx
@tenodogblu No offence taken anyway,so don,t worry.I know what you mean, take work away from working people, and then the problems start. The businesses that do kick up in these places, god bless them, but they can never ever hope to have the uptake of the hundreds of men heavier industry once had,nor the training via apprenticeship which was a spring of available youth finding work thereafter.Sadly its up to people to do what governments fail to,by uniting for their town/village to make changes.
Well actually i live in shirebrook and i find it a rather nice place, so i disagree wiht you as there is not as much graffiti as you and litter has been reducing.
a negative film from a negative person, people like you make me sick.. you were obviously sneaking around taking these (poor quality amateurish and flat) photos on a Sunday morning when no one was around, I hope you're proud of slating the town where a lot of hardworking people live whilst hiding behind the name of "glidey" If you're going to slate our Village then grow a pair of balls and have the decency to let people know you really are...
@MrJanesaddiction - Good post - nice to see some perspective and common sense for a change. Shirebrook was once a great place to be - everything for everyone - no matter what age. It is nothing short of a disgrace how it's been allowed to slide. You can't blame it all on pit closures or the economy - the politicians (local ones that is) have a lot to answer for. Feckless, selfish, sententious oafs willing to watch whilst the town dies. Cocks crowing from the dung heap and nothing more.
Shirebrook is nothing as bad as this it has a good skatepark , a leisure centre , there is soon to be a freerunning park also it is a nice small town to live in . so this video is just trying to make it look bad but it isnt bad at all well thats what i think anyway :P
@reecebates . Thanks for the rather subjective comments. You say "Shirebrook is nothing as bad as this". Excuse me but they are PHOTOGRAPHS, not a surrealist painting. I must disagree with you about a "good skatepark". I don't know what a bad one would be like - having considered the rusting, graffiti spattered and litter strewn death pit that I have seen. It's OK I suppose if you are in the small minority that accepts things like that. No mention of decent shops, pubs, restaurants etc. Shame.
@vidmasters97 That's just about it. Please note I have refrained from personal insults such as "you are a total bum" - and I don't need to resort to that just to have an argument. You have your view, I have mine. Other than your grammar and spelling needing a clear examination (before posting in future) I have enjoyed replying to you and I hope I have answered your queries adequately and professionally. Please note - I won't justify any more more of your inept posts with comment. Bye.
@vidmasters97 "Quotes" continued" -: "I have noooo problems with Shirebrook". Well, good for you, but I would suggest either your self esteem or aspirations are pretty low, but what would I know. Lots and lots of people do have problems -the old, the infirm, those without jobs or those about to lose their jobs, those in fear of crime - I could go on. "Putting the images in black and white to make it seem dull". No it is in black and white to save further embarrassment through "colour".
@vidmasters97 "Quotes" continued -: "Why live here?" Because I've already spent over forty years here paying taxes and wanting a town to be proud of. I'm not paying out more money to money grubbing solicitors and estate agents and giving myself and my family the stress of moving just because of the immorality of local authorities. "Leaves, what do you expect them to "dooo" fly away". Bizarre quote grammatically. No, I expect the place to be cleaned up properly - it's not too much to ask is it ?
@vidmasters97 - Let's examine some of your quotes -: "you are a total bum" - bizarre and physiologically unsound but what else have we come to expect from people such as you? "Shirebrook is a nice village and how is it dirty..". Go ahead and ask the local authority how many thousands of pounds (of tax payers money) they spend each year trying to keep it "clean". "You obviously hate the place". No, I despise the place it has been allowed to become.
Thanks for the useful insight but as you can see nearly two thousand three hundred people have viewed this and none have suggested wanted to see "decent" places. The pastiche of photographs was taken around the CENTRE of Shirebrook to show the authorities (BDC) that despite their misguided claims, Shirebrook really is a dirty, run down shit hole to anyone with a modicum of pride or shame - and still is. A "video" of "decent" places in the same area would be a very, very, short film indeed.
@blarrf "There's a good tattooist there now." Well I can't see your point to be honest. There's a good butcher, a baker etc. but Shirebrook is still dying on its feet. Ask the police what they think, ask your local councillor (there's five of them on Bolsover District Council representing Shirebrook) what they have PERSONALLY done for Shirebrook in the last five years that has improved the place. I promise the silence will be deafening.
Thanks for the comments and you are right in a lot of what you say. Shirebrook has an unbelievable amount of POTENTIAL - the problem is tapping into that potential and you have correctly identified that three areas are fighting between themselves and creating nothing. There are a small group of people trying very locally and at a low level to get the councils to TALK and WORK together. This is ongoing, is very hard, and tiring - but we have some progress - watch this space..............!!
Yes be positive ,its always been a shit hole and still is, fucked by the iron lady and scargill then fucked by the behind the times left in the dark ages ,never moved on locals. Its tuff, get a life folks and move the fuck out,let them flatten the place and grow wild flowers on the land.
I think you're wrong to say it's ALWAYS been a shit hole - I'm older than you and can remember a noble hard working people that ran businesses proudly. You are RIGHT about "some left in the dark ages locals" - sadly they tend to be in positions of power and authority. It is "tough" - but not all of us can just get up and move - nor would we want to just yet, but we carry the fight forward and keep rattling cages - we want change and progress and we'll get it - soon.
@gildey No offence meant by my comments i still have family there, but i still think the place as well as New Houghton and the like will never be a good place to live ever in the future, and i mean not ever.
( the right to fuck off to some other place ) maybe you should be positive about shirebrook and get off ya ass and do something tell me this when ya took the pics of rubbish BET ya never cleaned it up noooo dint think so ive lived her all my life yeah years ago every1 new every1 now its nothing like that polish r everywere send them back that will give up some jobs stop dumping rubbish then it not be on the streets ppl cant really mine living in a shit tip as thay call it cos there still about
Well, well, what have we here. A considered and well structured article highlighting the inadequacies and conflicting interests of the political elite that govern our social and economic meanderings? Hardly.
Sadly your sententious and self serving diatribe only goes to highlight the sad fact that despite undergoing sixteen years of arguably the finest education that a state funded system can provide you have all the literary skills of a retarded gibbon.
left shirebrook in 92 it as gone down hill since then with all the shutters on shops and boarded up shops some good people in shirebrook the best youll find ,a few baddunz as well, you say it how it is in shirebrook, they dont further south,it was always a mess tho pear tree estate when they where knocking the houses down 87 was worse than beruit and people were still living there among the mess.
Derby Coucil is infested with Common Purpose parasites, so no wonder areas like Shirebrook have been allowed to get so bad.
I showed this to my mate (he's from Tirana, Albania) and he said that it looks worse than where he grew up and that there councils and people have pride in their communities.
You should petition the council to improve Shirebrook and, if they say no, vote the buggers out.
You've gone over to the Tories now in Europe so let's see what DC can do for you!

I lived there 30 years ago. Some things will never change. It's not the money, it's the people. And I don't mean Shirebrookians, I mean the British. The rest of the EU put us to shame. We now see many immigrants going back home. After expecting the best from one of the richest countries in the world they have seen how we live and can't put up with it. We are dirty, rowdy, uneducable and drunken slobs. Shirebrook might be a dump, but it is not the place. Look around a corner near you!

Wow very powerful images. We should all be so ashamed; we were prepared to rely on these communities for our coal supplies for many years. The local council should cut back on lunches and jollies to fund a clean up.They need to ask their younger residents what they want and what they are prepared to contribute. Well done Mickey Moo, thank goodness there is still passion and commitment to make a difference.
