The singer isn't even doing the vocals. The high pitched lead guitar is a sample. The lighting is bland, they look bored as hell. I saw them in Glasgow doing this, and was bored the entire time. Don't get me wrong, I ADORE Spiderland, and consider it one of the most important records I've ever heard, but the reformation really put me off them, as a group of musicians, for a long time. I couldn't believe how uninterested they seemed in doing the gig.
i cant belive how on time they are theres one part in this video where the drummer clicks his sticks and they totally switch to a diffrent time signiture.pure asome!
Sucks that post-rock had become so pretencious, full of sinthesisers and yet musicaly simple in later years. Bands like "Explosions in the sky" and "Royksop" sound more like a documentary soundtrack than anyting else.
I was at this show. A real treat! It was in Louisvile, their home town and their first show since breaking up years earlier. Someone should write a book about those guys: the Will Oldham connection, Mike Hunt, Zwan, Tortoise, Evergreen and countless other connections ,,, IndieRock royalty.
Umm .. Make that Lou-a-vul. BTW, on that night they had the worst opening band I've seen in my life. I don't recall that band's name. Probably their only show ever. It was a real head scratcher. Maybe olderthanyou can explain the opening act but they should not have taken the stage that night ... It got so ugly I almost thought they might cry onstage.
I actually like the fact that they're mostly motionless on stage. For some bands it would be ridiculous, but their music can actually be taken to heart so it works. I just couldn't imagine someone headbanging to this stuff; the music's too earnest, and I like that in them.
"Math rock" was an inside joke made by a friend of Chavez over a decade ago that caught on for some reason to describe bands like Don Caballero that use diff time signatures. 4/4 w/ Slint doesn't really qualify here.
i love these text arguments. i have no interest in technical ability or interesting time structures, i dont know i f id be able to spot it even if it slapped me in the face... however slint are absolutely awesome, its so emotive and electrifying and, and, wow. never seen a live take before, loved it thanks, xx.
I know how to read music, and what I know is that you "musical technicians" don't care about emotional evocation. You care about "reading music". The roots of music are founded in emotion. And when you focus too much on the technical, you lose sight of the main point.
Bands like Dream Theater and Rush are heralded for their technical ability, but they do nothing to inspire an audience (aside from other guitarists).
I do say to each their own. Not trying to hate, but pointing a critical eye.
Whether you like it or not you can't say they fuckin' suck cause that would refer to them having no skill, I don't expect everyone to like what I like, but don't say they suck unless they really do have no skill.
If you're to much of a fucking clown to realize how much Slint rules then get back to Wolfmother and the rest of your mediocre bullshit life. Do you not see the drummer and the way he rears back to hit that shit or the unusual stage set up. Anyway not that I care but it sucks some of you don't get it.
Who cares if people think they've no stage presence??? Do i care that i like mouldy cheese and others don't? No, so everyone stop being poncy hairdressers bitchin at each other, and taking offence from people's comments about something that will never affect you.
The music takes concentration, I'm the very same when I', playing, i gotta concentrate, but who cares anyway???
Exactly, NOBODY, so I'm gonna shut the fuck up now.
There is a rhythm, it's an odd time signature and an odd key signature, but they pushed the envelope and that's what makes them cool. The same poppish four beats and cheesy chord progressions get lame after a while. I understand if it's not your thing--it is rather bizarre music, but to say it's bad just because it's a little more musically intricate and different is ignorant.
Its called math-rock. Mathematics and rock combined, the rhythm isn't conventional and thats why anyone who can read music can appreciate it for what it is. it's very ignorant to say something "fucking suck's" when u obviously don't understand
Why aren't you listening to me? I know Slint rules, but I'm not keeping my eyes closed the whole time, and it enhances a show when the musicians play with at least some emotion.

Ok people, I'm going to have to call shenanigans. I like this band, I just discovered them and I have to say I really enjoy their music. But seriously... they are so wooden on stage. I know many of you think that's cool and all, but just because the majority of rock bands do it, that doesn't make it wrong to show emotion, showmanship, or just some plain ol' rock machismo. Conversely, just because they are different by standing still, that doesn't make them any more cool or special.
Ok retard, obviously after you opened your comment by calling "shenanigans" on Slint you were gonna write something stupid, but seriously ... that was especially lame. I think what made Slint so influential was their SOUND...not the way they stood/stand on stage.
I was trying to be playful and I wasn't rude, I wish you wouldn't be either.
As I said, I really like the band and my love of them has grown since the comment. I think you misinterpreted my comment, though. I appreciate their influence and sound and commend them for it, but this isn't a comment on that. I think that just because they performed like boards of wood it doesn't make them any more cool, as some have said, but I still don't think it detracts from their innovations and great sound.
Of course their calm stance doesn't make them any more cool or special, but it wouldn't add to it if they were bobbing their heads, skanking or doing Pete Wentz-approved spin kicks off the bass drum either.
I personally don't mind the whole stage presence thing- sure, it's a bit boring on youtube, but if you're actually there with your ears being pounded by Spiderland, I kind of doubt it'll be boring. I could be wrong- I haven't actually seen them live. Has anyone here?
Not really. They stood or sat in place and played loudly and beautifully. Very different from all of the hardcore, metal, and indie rock that was going on at the time where everybody tried to "rock out."
@TallFastLoud I have seen them live and the whole band faced away from the audience the whole time (in Boston). The audience was heckling them "Hey! play the one that goes quiet then loud then quiet again!" and they were completely self-absorbed; it's like they completely ignored the audience. It was good but a short time before some Berklee students covered the entirety of Spiderland and the Berklee cover band was better than Slint

you know what, this actually sounds a lot like something that could've come off of Nirvana's "In Utero" Album. guitar, drums, bass, song structure, vocals (and the sound of the guy's voice), everything.
what does that have to do with anything? this isn't supposed to sound like nirvana; i don't know if you were expecting such. and there is no similarity in the instruments at all. nirvana = 3 chords in 4/4. slint = complex time and key signatures. no hate on nirvana, just saying i don't know where you thought there would be a similarity.
hahahaha I thought Brian was just some sound guy chilling on the side of the stage until he moved a little and I realized it was Brian and he was singing. I love Slint, but I'm more than a little disapointed in their stage presence. I recognize the technical difficulty of the music, but god they all look bored to death. Still amazing though.

Which Evergreen? The original San Diego band that sounded way better than the Kentucky Touch and Go family?
Also, they DID write a book, sort of. It's by Crissy Piper and it's called "The Unheard Music". Look it up.
