  • The singer isn't even doing the vocals. The high pitched lead guitar is a sample. The lighting is bland, they look bored as hell. I saw them in Glasgow doing this, and was bored the entire time. Don't get me wrong, I ADORE Spiderland, and consider it one of the most important records I've ever heard, but the reformation really put me off them, as a group of musicians, for a long time. I couldn't believe how uninterested they seemed in doing the gig.

  • The best part of this phenomenal song is the last 2 and half minutes where the guitar snakes around the pounding snare drum.

  • There shouldn't be any lighting at all. This song should be played in complete darkness.

  • @IronicKismet took the words outta my mouth

  • where the fuck i had to be that night but there

  • i think the fact they arent moving fits completely with the vibe of their music

  • I like how Brian is on the side as opposed to being in the center like most lead singers. It looks more band like to me

  • Great drummer, smooth tune.

  • Watching this performance makes one appreciate how good the drumming is on that entire album.

  • great live!

  • Crema

  • INSANELY good.

  • i cant belive how on time they are theres one part in this video where the drummer clicks his sticks and they totally switch to a diffrent time signiture.pure asome!

  • This band is great!

Sucks that post-rock had become so pretencious, full of sinthesisers and yet musicaly simple in later years. Bands like "Explosions in the sky" and "Royksop" sound more like a documentary soundtrack than anyting else.

  • I was at this show. A real treat! It was in Louisvile, their home town and their first show since breaking up years earlier. Someone should write a book about those guys: the Will Oldham connection, Mike Hunt, Zwan, Tortoise, Evergreen and countless other connections ,,, IndieRock royalty.

  • Umm .. Make that Lou-a-vul. BTW, on that night they had the worst opening band I've seen in my life. I don't recall that band's name. Probably their only show ever. It was a real head scratcher. Maybe olderthanyou can explain the opening act but they should not have taken the stage that night ... It got so ugly I almost thought they might cry onstage.

  • Which Evergreen? The original San Diego band that sounded way better than the Kentucky Touch and Go family?

Also, they DID write a book, sort of. It's by Crissy Piper and it's called "The Unheard Music". Look it up.

  • stage presence?hmmm?i guess u have 2 b there. nice music though!

  • They were actually before tool so if anything tool spun them off. Either way they are both great bands.

  • Yeah dude, Tool is shit compared to these guys.

  • I actually like the fact that they're mostly motionless on stage. For some bands it would be ridiculous, but their music can actually be taken to heart so it works. I just couldn't imagine someone headbanging to this stuff; the music's too earnest, and I like that in them.

  • yeah kind of shoegazish

  • i could headbang 2 this,(but i also agree with u)

  • I detect robots.

Also, this song is awesome, even with no stage presence

  • the best slint live video i've heard, great audio here. the cymbal packs an insane punch.

  • Whoever did lighting for this show should be shot in the face.

  • I forgot how much I love this band. I wish I could have seen them play live, regardless of their "stage presence."

  • Britt Walford is such a good drummer.

  • este disco el spiderland es magnífico

  • Every time someone brings up stage presence being necessary, I tell them to go watch a video of Slint playing.

  • the verses sound like 5/4 to me! then it goes to 6/4 the end has a couple of measures of 11/4 then grooves around in 6/4

  • lamest string ever... i can't believe i just wasted 4 minutes of my life on this crap. get lives.

    SLINT FUC*ING RULES

  • who is the guy singing? I thought they were a 4 piece.

  • Brian McMahan, he is the singer and guitarist, but on the reunion tours he only played guitar on a few songs.

His brother is playing the other guitar, bassist is new aswell.

  • Sorry.......this song isn't 4/4 but you get my point.

  • "Math rock" was an inside joke made by a friend of Chavez over a decade ago that caught on for some reason to describe bands like Don Caballero that use diff time signatures. 4/4 w/ Slint doesn't really qualify here.

  • i love these text arguments. i have no interest in technical ability or interesting time structures, i dont know i f id be able to spot it even if it slapped me in the face... however slint are absolutely awesome, its so emotive and electrifying and, and, wow. never seen a live take before, loved it thanks, xx.

  • i have no idea why you people have to go and make such a big deal out of this. you can either like or not like SLINT...and then quietly move on.

  • I know how to read music, and what I know is that you "musical technicians" don't care about emotional evocation. You care about "reading music". The roots of music are founded in emotion. And when you focus too much on the technical, you lose sight of the main point.

Bands like Dream Theater and Rush are heralded for their technical ability, but they do nothing to inspire an audience (aside from other guitarists).

I do say to each their own. Not trying to hate, but pointing a critical eye.

  • Whether you like it or not you can't say they fuckin' suck cause that would refer to them having no skill, I don't expect everyone to like what I like, but don't say they suck unless they really do have no skill.

  • i couldnt agree more

  • that was sweet. It's not everyone's cup o' tea, but that's their loss I guess.

  • math rock??!

  • If you're to much of a fucking clown to realize how much Slint rules then get back to Wolfmother and the rest of your mediocre bullshit life. Do you not see the drummer and the way he rears back to hit that shit or the unusual stage set up. Anyway not that I care but it sucks some of you don't get it.

  • Who cares if people think they've no stage presence??? Do i care that i like mouldy cheese and others don't? No, so everyone stop being poncy hairdressers bitchin at each other, and taking offence from people's comments about something that will never affect you.

The music takes concentration, I'm the very same when I', playing, i gotta concentrate, but who cares anyway???

Exactly, NOBODY, so I'm gonna shut the fuck up now.

  • Even some colored lights would help...

  • There is a rhythm, it's an odd time signature and an odd key signature, but they pushed the envelope and that's what makes them cool. The same poppish four beats and cheesy chord progressions get lame after a while. I understand if it's not your thing--it is rather bizarre music, but to say it's bad just because it's a little more musically intricate and different is ignorant.

  • Its called math-rock. Mathematics and rock combined, the rhythm isn't conventional and thats why anyone who can read music can appreciate it for what it is. it's very ignorant to say something "fucking suck's" when u obviously don't understand

  • Jacolyte:

I feel sorry for you if music is only something to your ears.

  • ipo youre such a fag. you dont go to a show to watch people do fuckin jumping jax for half an hour. you go to feel the music live. ill kill you

    slint fuckin rules

  • Why aren't you listening to me? I know Slint rules, but I'm not keeping my eyes closed the whole time, and it enhances a show when the musicians play with at least some emotion.

  • I agree with ipo. I like this band, but there's no stage presence to even speak of.

youslobknob, you seriously sound like a fanboy. You'll kill him because Slint doesn't have any stage presence? Very mature.

  • You sound like one of those "mature" art fags with a beard and a vest.

  • cool story bro

  • knew youd like it

  • how did you know?????what I was wearinggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WATCH: "Freedom to fascism", "Money as debt", "Endgame", "Money masters", "Zeitgeist", "Ring of power".... THIS PROVES HOW WE ARE ALL SLAVES! WAKE THE FUCK UP! FIGURE IT OUT! UNITE- ONELOVE.

  • Ok people, I'm going to have to call shenanigans. I like this band, I just discovered them and I have to say I really enjoy their music. But seriously... they are so wooden on stage. I know many of you think that's cool and all, but just because the majority of rock bands do it, that doesn't make it wrong to show emotion, showmanship, or just some plain ol' rock machismo. Conversely, just because they are different by standing still, that doesn't make them any more cool or special.

  • Ok retard, obviously after you opened your comment by calling "shenanigans" on Slint you were gonna write something stupid, but seriously ... that was especially lame. I think what made Slint so influential was their SOUND...not the way they stood/stand on stage.

  • I was trying to be playful and I wasn't rude, I wish you wouldn't be either.

As I said, I really like the band and my love of them has grown since the comment. I think you misinterpreted my comment, though. I appreciate their influence and sound and commend them for it, but this isn't a comment on that. I think that just because they performed like boards of wood it doesn't make them any more cool, as some have said, but I still don't think it detracts from their innovations and great sound.

  • Of course their calm stance doesn't make them any more cool or special, but it wouldn't add to it if they were bobbing their heads, skanking or doing Pete Wentz-approved spin kicks off the bass drum either.

  • Nosferatu Man rules!!!

  • Does anybody know where you can still buy Slint's music including their earlier stuff?

  • lots of places mate. I can find it in the czech republic so you can surely find it in the states.

  • Try Touch and Go, their old Label.

  • Brutales Slint

    Gracias

  • I personally don't mind the whole stage presence thing- sure, it's a bit boring on youtube, but if you're actually there with your ears being pounded by Spiderland, I kind of doubt it'll be boring. I could be wrong- I haven't actually seen them live. Has anyone here?

  • Yes, several times, both the original group and the reformed Slint.

  • Original? Awesome! Was it at all different?

  • Not really. They stood or sat in place and played loudly and beautifully. Very different from all of the hardcore, metal, and indie rock that was going on at the time where everybody tried to "rock out."

  • @TallFastLoud I have seen them live and the whole band faced away from the audience the whole time (in Boston). The audience was heckling them "Hey! play the one that goes quiet then loud then quiet again!" and they were completely self-absorbed; it's like they completely ignored the audience. It was good but a short time before some Berklee students covered the entirety of Spiderland and the Berklee cover band was better than Slint

  • the only band that doesn't need to move on stage to be amazing

  • amp looks like a telstra phone box.

  • love this song...brings me back to the night i bought the album..

went driving on a long dark road...thats the best way to hear it...

    thx for posting this

  • i thought slint only had 4 members....

  • on the album it had 4 memebers because the singer played guitar too. live they have another guy playing guitar.

  • very static...but that's the point....David Pajo is a genius

  • A friend of mine bought a copy of spiderland at a christian concert we went to in high school. That's just great

  • there stage presence is pretty not good

    still a fucking great album

    and band

  • non capisci un emerito grande cazzo...

  • Amazing!

One of my favorite bands of all time!

  • Maybe it's more like "In Utero" could've come off "Spiderland" eh?

  • no shit eh? good to know. interesting. thnx.

  • Except they disband (until a reunion) in 1991, two years before In Utero.

  • whilst in utero was amazing, this sounds nothing like nirvana. the only similarity is the instruments.

  • if Slint is a bottle of scotch, then Nirvana is a cup of weak cordial.

  • if slint is a bottle scotch, then led zeppelin is sex

  • if radiohead is eternal life, then ISIS is God

  • what does that have to do with anything? this isn't supposed to sound like nirvana; i don't know if you were expecting such. and there is no similarity in the instruments at all. nirvana = 3 chords in 4/4. slint = complex time and key signatures. no hate on nirvana, just saying i don't know where you thought there would be a similarity.

  • you're an idiot

  • wow, don't know where you see that. the bands are totally different.

  • i think "stage presence" is a bit of a misnomer...

  • They look like a bunch of mannequins onstage.

  • new slint song at youtube/brentalbot

  • Slint

  • B R U T A L

  • britt walford completely owns

  • hahahaha I thought Brian was just some sound guy chilling on the side of the stage until he moved a little and I realized it was Brian and he was singing. I love Slint, but I'm more than a little disapointed in their stage presence. I recognize the technical difficulty of the music, but god they all look bored to death. Still amazing though.

  • Slint. It's all you need.

  • thanks for puttin up the video, i just wish Slint would have shown more energy in their live shows.

  • that's incredible, my favourite and fundamental band is alive!! great job...olderthanyou!!

  • pioneers of post rock

  • The godfathers...now all we need are some Hoover videos to make this world complete.

  • Slint is awesome! Hooray for Spiderand!

  • i like this band...some weird time signatures there...i like this stuff...The Fray is pablum crap.

    Kill Ugly Radio.

  • Great!

  • is their any realy old footage of slint live? thanks for this vid :)

  • I used to have an MP3 of them live back like... before they broke up. I never listened to it, but it might still be there. But that's about it.
