I`m new to freeDOS (I like how well it works in my old Notebook), is there a way to change the font, color, etc of the prompt and make it all permanent? Thank you!
FreeDos is pretty much the same as any standard EMM-Enchanced task-switching class DOS. (Basically this includes most famously MSDOS 6 series and PCDOS 6 series.)
It supports drive assignments, IDE/ATAPI, standards DOS TSR API drivers. Pretty much what you'd expect from it's class of DOS.
It will support most standard hardware. As of drives it supports floppy drives, hard drives and CDROM drives, but currently lacks built in support for USB, unless you have BIOS legacy support for them.
The installer is actually really annoying if you are using the full distro. It'll install a few programs and then stop and prompt to ask whether you want to install the next handful of programs, and repeat this more than ten times. Any sane installer tries to minimize the amount of time you have to spend waiting for the computer to ask you more questions. It would have made a lot more sense to collect all the information at the start and then install without user involvement.

In case you didn't notice, DOS stands for Disk Operating System, so the actual name for this operating system would be FreeMS-DOS... and besides, VMware sucks!
@Vyggy And like ReactOS, it fails. I tried it once. It was so awesome! I got random errors on my screen, and it was flooded with errors. Until I pressed the reset button, and installed 95.
Cool. I should put this to use on my old IBM running Windows ME. Are there any graphical shells for this yet or is it just plain text DOS for right now?
how long does it take to configure the dependencies i have had it on for 13 hours and it hasn't moved

I tried freeDOS and is very nice, I just need the driver for the USB Port, so I can use my portable HD...not sure how to do it
clandestine1976 2 years ago
I did some research and it looks we need to download the driver, I haven`t been able to fix this issue, let me know if you have better luck...

Depends, what's the partition type? If it's FAT, NTFS or a CD/DVD drive, FreeDOS will support it. Not sure about Linux partitions.

I'm trying to install it and then put spinrite on it, so I can run it on my Mac's hard drives. Possible?

Why would it be FreeMicrosoft-DiskOperatingSystem? Whats wrong with FreeDiskOperatingSystem?

The purpose of FreeDOS is to basically be the same as MS-DOS, so my name would be more correct.
Dalem50005 3 years ago
it aims to be MS-DOS /compatible/, not MS-DOS. A little like ReactOS, it tries to be Windows compatible, not Windows itself.
