It was approved through GM and the plant made one and gave it to him for his museum with left over parts over the years. It was a tax write off for them.

There is a flaw in the lyrics to this song. Earlier he stated that he got the engine and the transmisssion the same day early in his career at GM but later in the song the engine turns out to be a '73 and the transmission a '43. It was either a flaw in the lyrics or he was one dumb factory worker.
