Smallpox and disease in general are not curable. Just because we are only beginning to manipulate a particular outbreak (ex smallpox) doesn't mean we have cured it. So we don't see routine doctor visits dealing with smallpox illness...big deal. Smallpox itself remains alive in two countries that I know of (USA and Russia) where it is kept in extreme military confinement -- intended to be used as a weapon.
I would also state that HIV was designed but that is just a thought.

In the next century, there won't be any incurable diseases.
HIV is a virus. Viruses evlove on their own. HIV crossed over from primates to humans in the late 70's.
Chimps still carry the HIV virus, but it doesn't harm them. Swine Flu and the Bird Flu are other examples of the evolution of a virus.
