  • It would really suck to get to the very top, and then hear the sound of chainsaws firing up.

  • I feel the tape measure method of measuring the height of this tree (or any big tree for that matter) is inadequate and subject to very large error(s). With today's simple and easily used laser measuring devices, a better and far more accurate measurement could be made. I'd be very interested, for example, to see how the measuring tape is hung from the very top of the tree - not to mention being made to hang perfectly straight for ~ 380 feet.

  • one of my worst fear

  • I can hardly pay attention to this video because of the thumbnail of a plant that looks like a penis at the side of my screen

  • @dominicfields15 lmfao

  • it´s beatiful. it´s incredible.

    sergio SP Brasil

  • Ask alex honnold next time :D

  • screw meters that tree is not in Europe and i hope you do not live in a wooden home

  • What's the name of the song in the beginning?

  • 379 Feet?!

  • DUDE! get a motorised ascender! just because the trees old as fuck! doesn't mean the way you get to the top has to be!

  • @Shevtron3100 hes fucking climbing it you idiot

  • @shepardson1 barely call that climbing. stupid cunt.

  • climber - "HEY GUYS, IM UP!"

guy on the bottom - "OK DROP THE TAPE MEASURE!"

    climber - "CAN'T FIND IT!"

guy on the bottom - "OH, HERE IT IS! IT WAS IN MY BACKPACK!"

    climber - "FUCK"

  • how old is that tree

  • how does the crossbow work he shot a green line and in the next scene he was climbing a rope can someone explain to me what he shot into the tree. Was it an arrow? if so what kind?

  • @1984wrx they attach the climbing line to the line from the crossbow and pull it up and through!

  • The Seattle Times reported yesterday on a Douglas fir that was said to be 465 ft tall in 1897. Apparently 300 to 400 foot trees were logged in downtown Seattle and Vancouver. Hard to imagine, because it's all pavement and sky scrapers today.

  • climbing tree since I were small.wanna do it again like a tom boy, love treess....

  • is it drop a tape measure or drop a tape measurer ?

  • the general sherman has the most volume of any tree in the world. the hyperion tree in john muir woods is taller and a lot skinnier

  • Comment removed

  • @felixthequick Actually, Hyperion is in Redwoods National Park, not Muir Woods. Muir Woods is in Marin County.

  • Would suck climbing to the top, only to see one bigger lol

  • @kstylos Why would it suck?

  • that guy has balls

  • The Elk river tree was felled in 1886. The recorded length was 424 feet. That's a record for Redwoods.

There were rumors of trees reaching 450 feet in the flats near Orick in the 19th century.

  • whats uo there lol. tv show

  • I somehow imagine Tree beard coming along at any point wondering what you're doing lol. It's a shame that so many of these trees have been cut down for timber and how sad that we treat the world as a giant commodity store!

  • watch the branch the ropes attached to brake XD

  • @Nagajolokiafied: I ♥ your illusory superiority. You seem to think you are smarter than others; you aren't. What if you can't see the top of the tree from the ground? Algebra is fine for people who think they're smarter than others like you, but actually measuring the tree is a whole lot more precise than picking a random spot in the leaves because you're a lazy, cocky math teacher or something. P.S. If you want to find the length and it's not straight as a pole you have to use a tape measure.

  • Sadly 90 odd percent of the real tall and old Douglas fir and Redwoods are all chopped down. And few records of height survive.

  • The Whatcom county fir tree was reported at 465 feet high in the New York Times. It was felled in late 1896 on the Alfred Loop property.

The fir trees up in that Mt. Baker region often exceeded 350 feet, so I think this 465 foot measurement may indeed be genuine. We have records of 390 to 415 footers in British Columbia, so who knows how tall the real old giants got.

  • Hyperion is actually, about 386 feet tall, because it is situated on a hillside, so part of the trunk is lower than the base.

The mean height is 379 feet above the ground, but 386 feet is it's greatest length of stem.

We had some Douglas firs in Canada and Washington state that exceeded this height by 10 to 30 feet and possibly even 60 feet.

  • love to be there, how bout some more videos and what is that music?

  • Yur such a neerd

  • You know , if d= the distance from the tree, æ=the angle of elevation from the ground to the top of the tree when you're d meters away from the tree, and h= the height of the tree, then d•Tan(æ°)=h. So remember kids, if you don't want to exert any energy on silly things like climbing tall trees and measuring them, Stay in school, eat your vegetables, and MOST of all...

  • wow is all i can say

  • que no entiendo

  • like my penis

  • Ah, yes. The Peace Tower in Ottawa.

  • Comment removed

  • must be done in HD i agree

  • @Left4ModernWarfare2 I agree,..It is stupid to be a Liberal tree-hugger.

  • The tree is in America, and this shitty video still measures it in meters, and compares it to some piece of shit building in Canada. Typical Liberal, America hating, bed-wetting, tree-huggers.

  • @gynecolog1st haha your ignorant and fool beyond belief

  • Comment removed

  • @gynecolog1st i started cracking up when you said "and compares it to some piece of **** building in Canada"

  • very cool... i'd imagine once you reach the top, you gain a unique perspective, on not just the tree, but life itself.... keep experiencing the wonder of discovery.... thanks 4 sharing it...

  • Did they seriously shoot the tree when they could just use trigonometry to measure its height?

  • he shot a line up and over a branch

    he didn't "shoot" the tree

and... if you have every seen one of these trees... you can't see the whole thing no matter where you are

at the base you can't see the top

that is why the photo is about 100 pics

aside from that... where's your sense of adventure math nerd?

  • @nssaquinas They'd rather spend hours on end to walk there, than climb it for an hour and drop paper from the top.. instead of doing math. LOLOLOLOLOL

  • @nssaquinas its not a tree standing in the middle of a field, its in a huuuuge valley with hundreds of other giant trees around it, go use trig and find its height for me please

  • That's a big tree.

  • about 10 people can piss behind it and u wont even notice, NEAT =)

  • Beautiful video.

  • How many feet is that

  • @codcomm23 379.3 ft

  • 23 m taller than the Peace Tower in Ottawa. That really puts it in perspective for us who live in the states!

  • @thowdy Yeah, you're right. Because as we all know, the world evolves around Americans. Get a grip buddy.

  • @matt10155 lighten up matt, it was just a comment.

  • 30 years old and still climbing trees..... jealous.. =)

  • I want to kneel before this mighty tree.

  • *Drops Camera* now that would be a view :)

  • I think big ben is way taller than the tree

  • @MrLucas1121 Why thank you.

  • funny people trying to act below lol

  • just noticed that i have Axmen playing on my tv, aahaha win

  • lol dumdum, when you ascend ropes its easier to drag a line and pull your gear up when you get to a rest spot.

  • His arms are huge! Even for a really small-looking guy lol

  • amazing.. litterally loss of words for this :P

  • Mother nature is so unique.....

  • What makes the tree he climbed stand out to me is that the tree had a "living" top.

Throughout the redwood regions the tall trees almost always show a "burnt" or otherwise "damaged" crown from lightening strikes...... that this one doesn't show signs of lightening strike, considering it's height amongst the other trees if, very interesting.

  • Thats a lot of fire wood.

  • who cares about measurments in "METERS" by god this is america, tell the measurement in "FEET"

  • @surrynet are u able to calculate?

  • @Schnoblauch sure can but like I said why make the viewing public calculate, they just want to see the video, not attend math class.

  • That would be a tough hike with the chainsaw! The Homelite 1130g outta do the trick.

  • @DickWheels I'll bring the 090-G!!

  • in soviet russia tree climb you.

  • @panda02011991 simpsons quote win

  • @panda02011991 ur a weirdo

  • @panda02011991 wtf?

  • not that i would cut one but do they make like red wood furniture

  • I wanna climb up there too =D I love climbing to trees!

  • 1080p please ! :)

  • where you so high could you see your house from there?

  • lololololololololololololololololololololololololo

  • Good work Jim. I for one appreciate your efforts in keeping those great trees around. I'd love to help.

  • fuck

  • I heard that red woods seeds are so small that even if you put 100,000 of them together it still would't weigh 1 pound but by the seed being so small it doesn't seem like it would grow into a tree this large

  • be a man frestyle that monster

  • Historic Trees...Awsome!

  • in soviet russia, tree climb you!

  • Why not just use trigonometry instead of risking your life climbing the tree?

  • just so, some day in the future you can tell your grandchildren you climbed a 115mt. and describe the view of the forest from its top and not telling them "i was sitting on a chair with a sheet of paper making calculations a 6th grader can solve". Watching footage of wonderfull things is a great thing, but beeing part of it is a feeling varios scales of magnitude above it.

  • @HypnosArg Please use vague or non-specific comparisons when using a sterotype as an analogy. Otherwise, sixth graders get offended.

  • @TheBourneAirsofter bcuz it are fun!!!!!!!!!111111111111111

  • i would like to go with like 10 guys with chainsaws and chainsaw shark that tree! :)

  • @thoraxxx2 ANGRY FACE THAT IS BAD FOR THE TREE

  • in Soviet Russia, tree climb you.

  • how bad would that suck to get to the top and be looking at a bigger tree just a little bit further over that way lol

  • wow i think that edward should climb that tree since he is a vampire

  • i wish i was that tall :(

  • let me get my saw!!!!!!!

  • @elknoff a saw wouldn't even scratch it compared 2 its actual size

  • to even make a joke like that you have to be a bit retarded, im sorry for you!

  • this is rather redundant. why not just use trig to find the height of the tree. saves much more time.

  • @hagu44

not as accurate when you cant see the top.

  • @hagu44 would you rather say "i climbed the world's tallest tree" or "i measured the world's tallest tree using trigonometry" ? Math may be the fast way.. but climbing is the COOL WAY!

  • how old do u think this tree is

  • wrong friend the easiest way to measure it is to cut it!! :) lol

  • Honorable mention "Richard St. Barbe Baker", "judi Bari" and many more defenders of the Redwoods who are immortalized for their heroic efforts,

  • Redwood loggers would pay a serious price for that tree, but i think no money can buy the greatness of the nature at its best :)

  • if you record something this awesome.

    do it in HD plz

  • @forehandturkey >>> Nat Geo just posted a 44 minute video called Climbing the Redwoods on Youtube about a week ago. It includes part of this. The 44 min. version is superb, covering the redwood canopy climbing, Fay transect and more. Basically the screen counterpart to the October 2009 Nat Geo magazine cover story on Redwoods the Tallest Trees. You will enjoy the crisp photography.

  • @forehandturkey Hey douche, why don't you get off your computer and go see it in the highest definition you can! REAL LIFE!

    Whoa.

  • @forehandturkey Hopefully by now he's got a GoPro HD. :)

  • you kno they find giant fossilized trees like this standing up through layers of sedimentary rock that suppossedly took millions of years to form.

  • as far as you know, it could of grown in 1000 years

  • Loriaen,Corz3749 is just joking people no is that stupid....

  • Tree-climbers for the world! ;) Now I want to climb this tree! whoever thinks someone should cut that redwood down obviously lacks common sense or respect for something ten times as old as they'll ever be.

  • Man ide like to cut that down lol

  • i would never trust the hook from the crossbow to stay in that tree if i ever did something like this

  • lol its used to get your rope up there dude, its not the rope, it would never have enough force to get a arrow that high and sturdy enough into a tree

  • oh i see now... thx

  • @guaranic - you don't trust the hook. You shoot fishing line, use it to pull up thicker line, then use that to pull up climbing rope.

  • yeah, someone else already replied, it makes sense now

  • september 16, ( The expedition day ) Is my birth day LOL :D! i turned like 8 or 9

  • Trees are magnificently beautiful. We ALL need to do something about saving them, coming up with alternatives. They, the trees, help us live and so we are obligated and are given the responsibility to do the same.

  • I get the same feeling at 60 ft.

  • @Omarbilal79 ;) ditto

  • this guy is a complete greener. "your now inside this organism"

  • They shoulda just hired steph davis

  • holy shit

  • *fall*

  • Ill be funny as he is looking at the forest from the top, he noticed that he climed the wrong one...haa

  • I think cutting it down would take more effort and be more sangerous

  • This is not real im in awe, im from Slovenia, would love to get some seeds and plant some here, great work guys

  • @celpabedn

You ever seen the M. D. Vaden Redwood page? Has a ton of redwood stuff. Google it sometime.

For seeds, search for the UBC botanical forums, and post a request. A lot of internationals share on there. Maybe someone knows of a seed source.

  • I was in Yosemite back in September.

I saw redwoods and sequoias, they're simply amazing. I can't imagine just how awesome it would be to be in the top of the world's tallest tree.

  • you realise those tree's been there since the 300 a.d or mabey a lower time of year so that is how they are so tall.

  • Alright. Was expecting more real climbing footage. Aid climbing is not as exciting.

  • I know what you mean but with trees that large I don't know if theres any other way. I certainly wouldn't want to see handholds and footholds cut in the tree.

  • less then 1% left... omg it makes me so depressed. i can only imagine living in these forrest hundreds of years ago at its full potential. Must of been incredible.

  • i wana climb that tree!!!!

  • 379 ' and 1.21 "

  • You may have mastered metal but you fail metric. Metres are roughly 3 1/2 inches longer than yards......

  • hi man were is the tree

  • CALI

  • jesus = short live..

  • Thanks for sharing...I'm a homeschool mom of 4 and this was great to be able to show my girls. Thanks again...How can anyone deny God when you see all the beauty He's created around us. Awesome!

  • How can anyone deny God when you see thousands of starving children.

  • Not God's fault. That's just indiscriminate breeding. WTF did the parents think was going to feed their sprogs?

  • god = fake

  • god = your imagination.

  • God=real

  • God=bastard

  • you=bastard

and if you think God is bastard, why make it a proper noun?

  • you+god = good porn video for catholic priests

  • you+the way you think = is just a disgrace for the community.

and why do you include the porn thing in the argument?

  • It's 379 feet of wood for this guy to grip

  • 759

  • wait srry. 359 my bad. wrong key

  • What a beautiful and inspiring video! I love trees.

  • i have been in tree work for 27 years and been up in big trees well over 150 feet that tree is all about big(tall/and wide) i have all ways wanted to do what you just did ! you are doing the right thing by looking after what little we have left and thanks for that
