avail was pretty goddamn good. i have had several of their albums. despite the era in which it was released, the album One Wrench is one of my longitme faves, and sits side-by-side with my collection of Bad Brains, TSOL, black flag and Circle Jerks. it ranks right up there with the rest.
"Take heart, all of you who've mourned the absence of Avail from the Richmond scene these past several years. Freeman, a new band who've been around for the past year or so, reunites 3/5 of the classic Satiate/Dixie lineup of Avail, bringing them back together for the first time in fifteen years. (continued)
Guitarist Joe Banks is still technically a member of Avail (since they are technically still together), but drummer Erik Larson left after 1998's Over The James, and Avail bassist Chuck McCauley, who is playing rhythm guitar in Freeman now, last played with Avail in 1994. Along with former Wheelbite vocalist Freeman Martin and former Mason Dixon Disaster bassist Chris Rigo, they make up Freeman . . . celebrating the release of their debut LP, It Doesn't Matter. (continued)
The album is currently available . . . and it's pretty excellent, bringing that same driving, melodic, somewhat emotional sound that Avail always had together with more overt hardcore influences and Freeman's voice, which is reminiscent both of Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan and of Dave Smalley during his Down By Law days. The album definitely continues in the tradition established by Avail's classic 90s albums, and Freeman should easily win a place in the heart of that band's longtime fans."
R.I.P. Avail. These guys were part of one of the best and close knit music movements of our generation. Avail, Hot water music, Ann beretta, strike anywhere, leatherface, small brown bike, and the list goes on. Glad to be a part of that scene. "Busted lip from microphone brawl, angelic songs sung by all"
4 a.m. Friday is fucking amazing!! Saw them and Propaghandhi at the Congress Theater in Chicago.....shit 10-12 years ago (excuse my memory).......Can I have those days back??!!
wow i was just randomly reading a review on this band for the first time and i looked them up on youtube to click on this song and i just realized that i remember it from thps4, wow. those games had such awesome music!
Quite to the contrary. Avail always played with awesome bands. One of the best shows I have ever seen was Dillenger 4, Kid Dynamite and Avail. In Philly. And I snuck in and didn't have to pay. I only did this b/c it was a sold out show and I was
'nt going to not see this show. Seeing Avail was unlike seeing any other band . Assholes didn't last long at any Avail show. They were not part of the party so get the F out. Damn I miss this band.
doubt we'll see anything new from Avail. supposedly some bad blood between Tim and the band over the band's treatment of a friend of TIm's who roadied for them on one of their last tours.
@availrvadgs Met tim at a show a couple of weeks ago, he told me they were done. Broke my heart but i'm just gald I got to see them 5 times before they broke up. I still have yet to see a band who can compare to avail's live show!
This song changed my life. Pretty ironic, I was sitting around playing THPS4, and this song came on. I stopped "skating," listened to the song, then got up and went outside. It was my first experience with punk. I was in 5th grade. It makes me want to get up and go! Fuck this comment I'm leaving lol
This looks really familiar to a show I saw in Germany. Lagwagon and No Use For a Name were there that night too. I think that's me! I had bitten a whole through my tounge and was bleeding all over everyone in the pit so I stepped aside.
Agreed. I really don't think that when Avail, or SW or any band started playing they said, "we are going to be 'X' style of band. They play what they like. The styles are really just meant to help describe them to other people. They aren't meant as laws. It undermines the actual music to argue about it.
i wish where i live there is bands like this playing live instead of stupid emo fags who think screeching like weasels (see what i did there) is hardcore punk. FUCk.
I know just what you mean. Around here we have 2 really annoying bands, Victory by Revenge & Rescue the Hero. You can look them up. Anyways, they're real annoying.
Aw too bad. Well i probably hate the fans more than the bands themselves, sometimes. They all think they are hardcore just 'cause they wear flannel shirts. Haha funny shit.
Possibly the dumbest comment ever! Screeching Weasel is unanimously considered a seminal punk band. Emo? What is music without emotion? GO listen to "MY Right" and tell me SW is an emo band.
Quit talking out of class. You dont know shit about the scene you are talking bout.
BTW, when has SW or SW fans ever claimed the band was "hardcore punk?"
Everyone knows they are a genius pop punk band.
See it's a real cool club, and you're not a part of it. (see what I did there?) fag

@AP93Playa I knew my comment would get this type of answers... I'm not saying I'm a fan of her music, but that particular song seemed to transmit a lot of emotion. No other factors considered! Peace
Your comment was 9 months ago, but I still feel obliged to reply.
I feel that there are in fact an abundant of 'emo fag' bands whom are more talented musically. Not a fan of Avail to be honest, they where recomended because I was listening to Neoclassical Metal, how this crap cameabout, I don't know.
Lets play two chords, make the same drum beat, write shitty lyrics, and sing/yell like morons... MUSIC! (unfortunateley)
@DaggersPlunge so, if i get you, you are saying that this song consists of "two chords, same drumbeat, shitty lyrics and yelling"; then go and stfu because few would agree to you
@DaggersPlunge Firsst of all Simple Song consists of 6 chords. And its callled simple song for a reason. It was probably also recommended it to you because Tim the singer used to be a drummer in a death metal band and the drummer Eric is in Alabama Thunder Pussy and was also in a band called Killara.
The lyrics aren't shitty if you lived in Richmond in the mid 90's. This album in particular is a very RIchmond specific album and if you weren't here in the time period you wouldn't get it.

@mikesxdestroy -No place in punk rock if your going to use hateful speech? Are you new to punk? Seriously, hateful speech is not necessary, but dude, are you going to cry every time someone says something you don't like? The world is full of these people, so you need to get past that. You want to hear hateful punk- try listening to Fear or GG Allin.
@mikesxdestroy -leave punk rock? It's not a city or state you knucklehead. Are you like 15 or something? I am all for confronting things, but don't whine so much. You sound so weak. Stand up for yourself, fine, but save those nonsense comments like "leave punk rock" or "no place in punk rock". It's a pretty wide genre. Trust me, I have been around it for 20+ years.
@tyrantsparky lol, he'd probably cry if he heard 20 seconds of Lee Ving at an early FEAR show.
Re: bigotry in punk. I -typically- dont call people fags, homos or whatever, but Im not gonna start a worldwide crusade to censor people. The second you start censoring, you might as well throw the rest of your freedoms away. One second you're listening to FEAR, and the next (because some head thinks the lyrics are offensive) your options are limited and the last music option is Justin fucking Bieber.
@OkayVinnie Avail was inspired by hardcore punk, metal, AND the first wave EMO you idiot, bands like Rites of Spring, Jaw Breaker and Fugazi, but no your such a genrist, a band that plays one type of music can't be inspired by a genre that you don't like
Avail! Great song. Saw them in AZ around 94/95...they played in a small empty storefront that some church group used on weekends. Funny place for a show. $5 and a can of food. It was the most powerful show I've ever seen. Thanks guys.
Pretty much aren't playing together as a band anymore. Avail is done from what I've heard. Most of them have families now, few are in other bands. Only three of them still live in the Richmond area apparently.
Tim's still playing out, he and Beau Beau, Gwomper and Joe all still live in RVA although I don't know about Ed I never really got to know him. Tim tours all the time, recently with Josh Small from RVA and Austin Lucas who's not from town but are both fucking amazing. Check out Austin Lucas's "go west."
That... makes me really sad. God these guys were ont he radio? uuuugh. I remeber seeing these guys live when this album came out. Good show oh god. Good times.. I miss it :(
Punk rock bands shouldn't be on the radio or a popular video game, you know? It's... PUNK ROCK... not fucking... Britney Spears... Punk isn't supposed to be popular. But nothing can be done, you know?
Why is punk not allowed to be popular among those who like it. Ever hear of a radio station thats all about punk. I agree with people below saying that is sad how a lot of people only know about song because its on a game. But it does introduce them to that band and maybe they'll start listening to them. I bet that the artist has no problem being on a game especially if it introduces a bunch of people to their music.
Punk Rock is a mind set not a life style and therefore top 40 would be counter to all punk rock stands for. Being punk has never meant acceptance and main stream
Yes AF signed onto a major record label, to "spread the message," and that they have done quite well.
No joke. But don't worry. THEY ARE LEAVING RCA. Going independent again. I suppose they had lots of pressure considering that they were working with capitalists.
Anyways, most bands these days have sold out...some are still nice and underground.
Punk is what you make it to be. If you are accepted (go mainstream), it doesn't mean you lost it.
However, if your ultimate goal is to BE accepted, then you got it wrong.
It's about being yourself, unless what you do is what everyone else does. Anyone can do punk. It doesn't matter where they're from and how they play it. It doesn't need to be 3 chords, it doesn't need to be sick solos.
It's an art of expressing yourself in any way you want, whether it's using the strum of a guitar or something as big as an entire symphony.
no i don't know u fucking moron get off ur own dick ur not some special person cuz u listen to a genre of music that is not played on the radio fucking idiot get a life

@OkayVinnie Screeching Weasel is the shit dude. You don't know what you're talking about.

@OkayVinnie Fucking Screeching Weasel is amazing. What the fuck are you talking about? They may not be hardcore punk but they're certainly not emo.

Avail!

Only three of them still live in the Richmond area apparently.
bullhunda 2 years ago 2
Tim's still playing out, he and Beau Beau, Gwomper and Joe all still live in RVA although I don't know about Ed I never really got to know him. Tim tours all the time, recently with Josh Small from RVA and Austin Lucas who's not from town but are both fucking amazing. Check out Austin Lucas's "go west."

Great band, best live act I've seen in a long time. Partied with them in Phoenix after the "Mason Jar" concert some years ago.

That... makes me really sad. God these guys were ont he radio? uuuugh. I remeber seeing these guys live when this album came out. Good show oh god. Good times.. I miss it :(
LokixOwnsU 3 years ago
why is that bad and besides i just said that they never played and yes they put it on an amazing show
riseagainstfan2 3 years ago
Punk rock bands shouldn't be on the radio or a popular video game, you know? It's... PUNK ROCK... not fucking... Britney Spears... Punk isn't supposed to be popular. But nothing can be done, you know?
LokixOwnsU 3 years ago
Why is punk not allowed to be popular among those who like it. Ever hear of a radio station thats all about punk. I agree with people below saying that is sad how a lot of people only know about song because its on a game. But it does introduce them to that band and maybe they'll start listening to them. I bet that the artist has no problem being on a game especially if it introduces a bunch of people to their music.
bookie92 3 years ago 5
Punk Rock is a mind set not a life style and therefore top 40 would be counter to all punk rock stands for. Being punk has never meant acceptance and main stream
alfatango1 3 years ago
totally i cant believe Anti-Flag went mainstream
riseagainstfan2 3 years ago
I think you need to rethink what it's about.
If you are accepted (go mainstream), it doesn't mean you lost it.
firzenr 3 years ago 5
However, if your ultimate goal is to BE accepted, then you got it wrong.
It's about being yourself, unless what you do is what everyone else does. Anyone can do punk. It doesn't matter where they're from and how they play it. It doesn't need to be 3 chords, it doesn't need to be sick solos.
It's an art of expressing yourself in any way you want, whether it's using the strum of a guitar or something as big as an entire symphony.
That is truly something to admire.
firzenr 3 years ago 6
for once i found a real punk n youtube !!;p
